Updated Minor League Camp Rosters

Here are the Cubs minor league rosters at Fitch Park as they were this morning (3/31).

OF Sam Fuld, 1B Micah Hoffpauir, and catcher Chris Robinson were sent down yesterday, but have not yet reported to Fitch Park.

As I’ve mentioned before, when the Cubs send players to Fitch Park (Minor League Camp) from HoHoKam Park, there are corresponding roster moves made at Fitch Park, as players are either moved downward (Iowa to Daytona, Tennessee to Daytona, et al) or released. (15 players were released last Sunday, although one was later re-signed).

At present, Iowa has 31 players (must get down to 24 by Opening Day), Tennessee has 31 players (must get down to 24 by Opening Day), Daytona has 27 players (must get down to 25 by Opening Day), and Peoria has 31 players (must get down to 25 by Opening Day). The Boise/Mesa squad presently has 39 players on its roster, but that number will actually increase by another 10-12 by this time next week.

The Boise/Mesa group is also the Cubs “Extended Spring Training” (EXST) squad that plays at Fitch Park April-May-June, before the Boise and AZL Cubs (Mesa) teams are formed in mid-June after the Rule 4 Draft. The EXST Cubs usually carry about 50 players, including players who were unable to make the Peoria Opening Day roster, and minor league players (mostly pitchers) who are rehabbing from injuries.

The Iowa and Tennessee clubs will usually carry 12 pitchers and 12 position players, and the Daytona and Peoria clubs will usually carry 13 pitchers and 12 position players. Each full-season affiliate also usually carries one “player-coach” (usually a catcher or a utility infielder) signed to a Minor League Uniform Player Contract who can be temporarily activated if a position player is placed on the minor league 7-day DL. The player-coach is moved back & forth to the roster as needed, sometimes for an extended period of time.

Phil, Any idea what the reasoning is behind limiting the 2A and 3A teams to 24 players instead of 25? I think it'd be advantageous to allow expanded rosters in the minors. Osiris

Phil -- thank you for all the updates. With your insight, I wonder if any of the releases surprised you. I was surprised they released Encarnacion (he is only 20 and did ok at AZ Cubs) and Dwayne Kemp (seems injuries hurt his development) and extremely surprised they released Robert Hernandez (who before the PEDs I thought was one of our top 5 pitching prospects) and Sean Williams (who is only 19 and could easily be sent back to Australian academy, couldn't he?). Any insight you have would be great. Thank you again for all the updates.

Thank you again for all the updates. =================================================== SPRINGS: The Cubs release players for all sorts of various reasons, not always most-directly related to what the player did on the field. In the case of Dwayne Kemp, he has a LOT of self-confidence, but he was hurt a lot (leg), and was unable to stay healthy for an extended period of time to where he could show the Cubs what he could do. Robert Hernandez has talent, but apparently the Cubs saw issues with him that made them think they should release him. Remember, minor league baseball players are just like other people, except they are under a lot of pressure and sometimes they make bad choices. I don't know what the deal was with Sean Williams and Diego Encarnacion.

Phil, Thanks again for the update. I asked you some questions about the player/coach in a post about two weeks ago and I really appreciated your answer. Thanks, things make more sense now with your explanation (like why the Cubs would carry a 25 year old catcher in single A). Keep up the great work! I always look forward to your posts! Tom in Peoria

He just recently converted, didn't he? ============================================ CHARLIE: Josh Lansford showed some promise as a one-inning relief pitcher, and he was thought of highly-enough that he got an invite to Instructs last Fall, but he had back problems the last couple of years that retarded his progress (and ended his Instructs season the first week he was there). His age (25 going on 26) didn't help his chances, either.

Burke and Jackson would have to skip a level to go to Tennessee. Jackson was just drafted last June. Flaherty looks like he may be skipping Daytona, but he's older than the three you mentioned--by three years (Vitters), two years (Jackson) and a year and three quarters (Burke). For some of these guys, DesMoines will not be on the road to Chicago. Consider moving to Knoxville, Mike, where the action will be the next few years. Chicago's closer, though, if you want to see Tyler Colvin. I can hop on I-81 and get to Knoxville in about eight hours, or I have Felix Pie just up the road in Baltimore.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
