Saturday Game Thread: Cardinals (28-21) @ Cubs (23-26)

Another indescribably beautiful summer day in Chicago; not bad since we're still in May.

Rookie Adam Ottavino, a first-round draft pick back in '06, has been called up to make this start for the Cardinals in place of the injured Kyle Lohse. I don't actually know what the Cubs' recent record is against guys making their Major League debuts, but I feel like it's horrendous. (This game from earlier this year leaps to mind, though Leake has certainly performed well overall.)

Carlos Silva, the first Cub pitcher to start a season 6-0 since Ken Holtzman did so 43 years ago, has already won more games in 9 starts for the Cubs than he did in 34 starts for the Mariners.

Geovany Soto is under the weather and is not starting, but he is available to play. Ramirez is sitting again in place of Fontenot. Note to fans sitting in the first-base box seats: you have been warned.

(On the other hand, in 58 fewer ABs than Ramirez, Fontenot has the same number of extra-base hits as A-Ram (10), which says just about all that needs to be said about the offensive season our regular third baseman is having.)

Cardinals vs. Silva (6-0, 3.52; 1-2, 2.08 all-time vs. StL)
Lopez 6, Ludwick 9, Pujols 3, Holliday 7, Rasmus 8, Freese 5, Molina 2, Schumaker 4, Ottavino 1

Cubs vs. Ottavino (Major League debut; 4-3, 4.17 at Triple-A Memphis)
Fukudome 9, Theriot 4, Lee 3, Soriano 7, Byrd 8, Fontenot 5, Castro 6, Hill 2, Silva 1

Comments

joe buck calling a cubs/cards game...special torture. and tim mccarver is getting too old to do his job, imo...not mentally or whatever, but his voice keeps getting slower and older...it's not as bad as that diane whatever dinosaur on NPR or anything, though. RIP colvin.

1-1 early ~edit~ 2-2 with 2 minutes left, too many blackhawks penalties early

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
