Now.....who are the three best prospects among this group? =============================================== These are my Top 5: 1. Austin Kirk, LHP 2. Jesus Morelli, RF 3. John Mincone, LHP 4. Ping-Chieh Chen, 2B 5. Yao-Lin Wang, RHP When he throws strikes Kirk is virtually unhittable with a 93 MPH fastball, a plus-curve, and a change, Morelli is a really good hitter with a RF arm, Mincone gets a ton of ground balls, Chen led the team in RBI despite primarily hitting lead-off (and he needs to play 2B because his arm is too scatter-gun to play SS), and Y. Wang (Chen's teammate from the Taiwan Junior National Team) is a solid starting pitcher prospect with a fastball, curve, and change-up. I didn't see quite enough of Cuban defector RHP Juan Yasser Serrano to be able to rate him a Top 5, but he is far more polished than most of the other pitchers here and should advance quickly just for that reason, although I'm not sure his stuff is better than Y. Wang's. Ex-catcher Alvaro Sosa had an impressive debut as a RHP, and LF Cody Shields, SS-2B Wes Darvill and C Sergio Burruel showed the most improvement at the plate the last part of EXST. Shields suffered a broken hand last week, but before that he was really starting to drive the ball (he was TERRIBLE at the plate in Minor League Camp, although he was still rehabbing from 2009 TJS), Darvill had no XBH but he did lead the team in walks (he is a VERY disciplined hitter), and Burruel caught fire the last couple of weeks and shows signs of being a good LH hitter. Burruel also picked three runners off base. On the negative side, Darvill has a Ryan Theriot type arm that makes him project more as a 2B than a SS, and Burruel is a bit feisty (he was pulled out of one game mid-inning when he wouldn't stop yelling at his own pitcher for working too slow, and the Angels coaches accused him of intentionaly placing a bat on the third base line in front of home plate to impede an Angels runner trying to score). The biggest disappointments were 6'6 Taiwanese RHP Tzu-An Wang (VERY raw pitcher with control issues and questionable stuff) and 2009 7th round pick IF-OF Blair Springfield (below-average runner, below-average arm, poor defensive player without a position, and he had no XBH while hitting .145, with 29 K and three GIDP in just 74 PA). And then there's RF Xavier Batista (a RH hitting version of Nelson Perez), who has the most raw power of any Cubs hitter at EXST, but he also strikes out a LOT (42 K in 101 PA).

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
