Updated through 8/31/14 - 25 games left for Cubs.
For failing to sign top overall pick Brady Aiken, the Houston Astros will get the 2nd pick in next year's draft on top of their regular pick.

Soler. Dang he's hot.
Turner looks okay BUT very deliberate and inefficient. Lots of pitches and Castillo setting up out of the zone almost exclusively.
they were playing in a kenko/rubber ball league...they don't have a future anyway.
it's the JV to the varsity...the flag girl to the cheerleader...etc etc...especially on the high-school level.
that said, i'd like to see more US kids playing kenko ball at younger ages (little league and before) because it strongly skews the game into a defensive game with a lot of fielders handling outs over popouts to the OF or Ks.
the ball generally isn't thrown as hard and it comes off the bat weakly unless it's squared up and/or hit very hard.
Yeah, links like that should come with a /not-the-onion disclaimer.
Hahaha! WHAT??!!! That's just wrong. Did they take a Sake break?
Japanese high school game goes 50 innings. BOTH starters go the distance (4 days 700 pitches).
Why didn't the Cubs go after Tanaka again?
This is completely irrational but I pretty much despised Bo Porter after he single handedly walked over and challenged the Cubs' dugout during that fracas with the Nationals a couple years back. Might be just me but he seemed fairly incendiary. I know he has a good reputation.
That's how I tell stories when I'm drunk. That needs a LOT of bracketing.
Lackey has a history of being an a-hole.
I agree dusty Baylor, I don't believe Bo Porter was the main problem. However, there appears to be a rift between him and the front office which, regardless of who's at fault, generally doesn't end well for a short tenured manager with a losing record.
allegedly the players were getting a bit sick of bo doing things his way with motivation and demands of his players...which is odd considering it's nothing that j.maddon hasn't done similarly in TB.
it sounds like an organizational issue going back to the minors, honestly...though it could be bo reading his players incorrectly and managing personalities improperly.
...and of course the GM/manager relationship has been publicity toxic for a while now (especially since the m.appel incident).
Not a surprise then. I'm not too sure what the Astros expeced, bringing back mostly the same guys from 2013, and expecting a huge imrovement...well, more than they did? Springer sure was K'ing a lot..but managed a .124 OPS+...Singleton's swing looked loopy to me.
Did anyone "get" the Cosart trade btw? Is Collin Moran worth it?
Porter and GM Jeff Luhnow were no longer playing nice with each other is what I've gathered from local reports here in Texas. Pretty similar to the Sveum situation with some apparent second guessing by the GM of in-game strategy. Guessing that the fact that neither Springer nor Singleton had excellent rookie outings also played a part. The local fans don't call them the disAstros without cause. Between the Aiken/draft fiasco, the computer breach, the Appel saga and some disappointing prospect progress; it's been a rough year for Astro fans.
Going from 61 wins to 66.....with Rizzo and Castro regressing, and Astros going from 51 wins to a pace of 69 wins.. with Keuchel improving, Springer debuting, and Altuve having his best season aren't EXACTLY the same thing Rob.
Agree to mostly disagree.
Same thing Cubs did with Sveum.
Wow....yeah it was Porter's fault the Astros suck.. They're on pace to win 69 games this year, up from 51 in 2014.
Geez...yeah I'd want that job....
Ex-Cub Bo Porter fired by the Astros. As was his bench coach Dave Trembley who managed in the Cubs minor league system for a while.
