Game Preview: White Sux (26-33) vs. Cubs (27-33)
The Cubs and White Sox square off for the first time to try and win the BP Crosstown Cup. Each member of the winning team gets an oily bird delivered to their doorstep.
The lineup for the Cubs from Muskat over twitter: rf fuke, 2b riot, 1b lee, cf byrd,
lf sori, 3b tracy, c hill, ss castro, p wells
And the White Sox lineup: Pierre lf, Ramirez ss, Rios cf, Konerko 1b, Jones
rf, AJ c, Beckham 2b, Nix 3b, (Peavy)
According to a caller on WSCR, Randy Wells was out partying with Ryan Dempster and the Blackhawks into the wee hours of the morning. Might as well just warm up Gorzelanny along with Wells to start the game.
Last, but not least, Mordecai Hill has these flattering words to say about your 2010 Cubs.
"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."
eh, Go Cubs?

Maybe Wells has a new pre-game routine. Look at all the money Farnsworth has made in his career, sets the right example for the young pitchers. Wells just needs a tighter pair of pants now.
I'm also glad BP is sponsoring the Crosstown Cup, since "disaster" and "negligence" are terms that would fit well with the Cubs these days.

I'm pretty sure I heard Lou saying something about Tyler Colvin being a "pretty boy" and having "a vagina" during the pregame. I'm not sure. He may have said that he smells bad and is "a douche" too. I think he high-fived Soriano afterward.

So, when Lou says something like--Unfortunately I have 5 major league outfielders on the roster, so I can't get Colvin in as much as he deserves because others need to play too--is that a message to the GM to trade from the teams strength in order to address a need either at the major league level or in the minors, or is that Lou just throwing up his hands and saying don't blame me?
I mean, should we expect Nady to be traded soon so that Lou only has 4 major league outfielders? Or expect to see Colvin traded soon? Or is Lou saying that we all just have to live with it until the situation somehow resolves itself?
I'm just curious what these angry rants at the press signify.

Look, we have five good outfielders, here - what am I going to do? Soriano has to play, even if he's batting .225 over half the season, you got to play him. Then there's Fukudome - who when I don't put on the lineup card, which he can't read because the first names are the last names anyway, he just jogs out to right field when the game starts. Byrd is leading the league in hitting, and does needless dives better than Andy Van Slyke ever did, and Nady is a proven vet who, I think, charged the beach at Normandy. How can I take him out of the lineup now that he can overthrow third with the best of them? Colvin is the only guy who does what I tell him to do, so he sits out most nights. What else can I do?

i think it means he has 5 good outfielders and 3 OF spots, someone has to sit.
of course it should be fuku right now.
Re: Game Preview: White Sux (26-33) vs. Cubs (27-33)
on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 2:14pm Permalink
A Soriano Byrd Colvin outfield with Nady at 1st would probably be our best offensive combination right now. Lee still isn't hitting, in case anyone's forgotten.
I've counted out winning at this point, though. I just want to see Colvin play because he's the guy I see providing the best value in the future, especially if the Cubs want to be more strategic with their payroll.
Fukudome would have to be the guy to sit. (And I hope that the Cubs are discussing Fukudome, Byrd, and Lee with other teams.)

From Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet (for this past week)
8. Brett Jackson, OF Cubs
Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: .333/.429/.567 (10-for-30), 1 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 10 RBIs, 10 R, 5 BB, 6 SO, 4-for-5 SB
The Scoop: Jackson's raw power has yet to show through in the heavy air of the Florida State League. The Cubs' 2009 first-round pick out of California has just three home runs, including his grand slam on Wednesday against Brevard County, but he's otherwise been holding his own. Jackson, who's been Daytona's leadoff hitter all year, has had issues making contact (54 strikeouts in 214 at-bats), but that was a known problem for him, and he's been patient enough to already have drawn 39 walks, the most by any FSL hitter. Jackson's biggest obstacle so far might be his home park, where he's hitting just .238/.370/.343 in 105 at-bats compared to .321/.426/.486 in 109 road at-bats.
10. Chris Archer, LHP Cubs ....

The last century also started out rough, as the Cubs finished 6th, 6th, and 5th from 1900-1902, topping out at 68 wins. But after finishing a solid 3rd (82-56) in 1903, the Cubs then reeled off back-to-back 90+ win seasons. Then from 1906-1910, they were in the World Series 4 of 5 years going 2-2, and the only year they missed the World Series they had 104 wins and a .680 winning percentage.
So yeah, if that's how a bad century looks 10 years in, there is nothing about our view from 2010 that suggests this one will be better, or even (cringe) as good.
