Bradley for Silva: best Cubs trade ever?

(Click on image for full size)

Oh hell no, but it's looking pretty good for 2010.

I thought if you googled "greatest Cubs trades ever", a bunch of great trade articles would come up. But...not really like that out there on the world wide web - it seemed like most focused on bad Cubs trades. Not good for a guy with as bad a memory as I have trying to make this comparison.

But Carrie Muskat has one that lists her bests and worst trades, with the best being the Cubs Ivan DeJesus for Larry Bowa and Ryne Sandberg on January 27, 1982. And actually, probably all 5 of Carrie's picks are better than Bradley for Silva. Unless Carlos goes undefeated for the rest of his career and leads the Cubs to the World Series before heading off to Cooperstown or something. But in a year that's been pretty devoid of any kind of news you'd call good, Carlos Silva is the feel-good story of the year.

To think that the Cubs have gotten 8 wins out of him already is waaay beyond what anybody could have envisioned when he came to Chicago. All most of us seemed to care about was just getting rid of poopy Milton Bradley.

Without even half of Silva's wins, the Cubs would right now be 22-35. That would put them a half game ahead of the Astros, in 5th place in the weakest division in the NL and probably (who's worse - the NL or AL Central?) all of baseball.

Anyway, there are lotsa different kinds of trades made for lotsa different kinds of reasons, and Bradley for Silva was supposed to be a malcontent turd for an overpriced turd - a sort of face-saving thing for the GMs and a fresh start for the players.

So far it has been one whopper of a good one for the Cubs.

P.S. Mitch Atkins getting called up, no word on who is going down quite yet.

speaking of Tim's work, this one is great...

Lineup vs. LH Buehrle: riot, bake, dlee, byrd, nady, sori, soto, stro, silv.

Jose Hernandez, Matt Bruback and Bobby Hill for Aram and Kenny Lofton was pretty sweet, even given Aram's current perplexing death spiral. I remember just being happy to be rid of Hernandez.

stupid fox saturdays...

phi/bos is pushing Michael Milken on me...3rd game in 3 days i've had to sit through this criminal who ruined the retirements of many people so he could make a few bucks. he also took the jobs of 1000s with his buy and gut methods of takeovers funded by his illegal activities.

he spent less than 2 years in prison for ruining lives and now because he got prostate cancer he's the whore who's found jesus for the cause.

anyone who thinks securities trading doesn't need regulation needs to refer to this asshat who doesn't deserve a public outlet for any cause no matter how noble.

you get more time in prison for attempting and failing to rob a store.

What's going on? Carlos The Stopper Silva is pitching, yet we're still losing? Maybe today will be the turn around point and Bizzaro Silva will be returning back to his dimension and letting the real AramRam and Carlos Silva back into ours.

he's losing today after putting in 7ip...still it was another in a long string of "are you f'n serious?" great silva starts.

wtf?

"The Diamondbacks...we lead the league in love." - mark grace
"We need to start leading the league in other things." - darren sutton

579 Ks from their batters entering today's game...leading by almost 90 Ks.

578 by Mark Reynolds

Nine game home stand if the cubs win 4 of them i would be really surprised,
hopefully D.Lee can form some friendships when the Angels come to town.

So many 1b men are on the open market that i wouldn't hang your hopes on trading Derrek Lee.

Two names come to mind to any team looking to find a 1b man. Paul Konerko and Lance Berkman.

And if you want to move an OFer just for the sake of moving an OFer to get Colvin some playing time, call up Boston right now. That entire OF is decimated by injuries and they will most certainly be looking to trade.

Maybe a Fukudome for Lowell trade could help both teams. Lowell's looked pretty good to me, in the 15 or so at bats I've seen (including ST). He's struggling with a low BABIP, according to Fangraphs. The things that Fukudome does well - play defense and get on base, will appeal to Boston and after 2.5 years of seeing that the Cubs are not going to the World Series, playing with a legitimate contender and some Japanese teammates may appeal to him.

although Jay Jackson left after 8 innings losing 3-2, our old pal John Grabow was up to his old tricks for the I-Cubs yesterday in the 9th:

Grabow 1.0 4 3 3 0 0 0 9.00

if he's really not hurt and just bad, it's going to be just as much roster trouble when his DL stint and rehab time runs out... as having Fukudome and Soriano hitting .205-.210 in the last month (and getting playing time over Colvin), having 3-5 hitters with almost no rbi's (Byrd's not the problem) and wasting some good starting pitching (ie. Lilly and now Silva)

What an ugly mess.

even Paul Sullivan is bummed about Grabow

Ready or not, Lou says Grabow will return very soon. But Grabow gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 inning for Iowa last night. Ready?

Carlos Santana learns a lesson on baseball and American Football simultaneously courtesy of Adam Dunn in Strasburg's 2nd start.

that was awesome beyond words...

Starting to wonder if Strasburg's two-seamer is a just a defense mechanism he's developed against pitch counts. If the kid gloves were taken off, and he was allowed to throw 125 pitches per start, I would bet he could get to 300 K's over a full season in 2011.

they laid off his changeup today a bit and drew some walks (although I wasn't completely playing attention to the game, so maybe he had some control issues with other pitches).

a lot of good it did them...

it's amazing that when someone just makes contact, you consider it a victory for the hitter.

Anyone able to find a video of the Dunn hit? I've been looking...

http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/video/pla...

i was expecting more, but it's a solid hit.

the Indians broadcast had a better angle more down the third base line as you could really see Santana not paying any attention and wandering down the line with Dunn coming at him

Santana was trying to backup the throw and well, he's new at the catching thing.

Too bad for him he didn't make that mistake with Theriot or some other midget coming down the line... Dunn is built like a brick shithouse!

  • Even from an on-field perspective, Torres is a 19-year-old beating up High-A pitching who also plays a great SS. Even if he never develops a legit MLB power stroke, he's still an obvious 4-tool guy with a very high floor. Sucks to trade away his next 6-8 years for a closer, albeit a great one.

  • "Like the Chapman deal for Cubs from on-field POV, wish I didn't now have to feel lousy following an otherwise likable Cubs team." @jonahkeri

pretty much sums up my feelings

  • You do have a point. The TheoJed certainly would need to address this in a transparent way. Milton Bradley was no help to the team.

  • FWIW, the Cubs would get a compensation draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds (around #35) if they extend a Qualifying Offer to Chapman post-2016 (probably about $17M), Chapman declines, and then he signs with another MLB club before next year's draft.

  • This all assumes Chapman doesn't want to be a free agent and possibly sign a $20MM+/year deal. We all know free agents get overpaid, sometimes dramatically (Hello, JayHey!). Not sure why Chapman would agree to the extension. If i'm is agent, I would tell him I could get I'm a $100M deal as a FA.

  • I'll root for the uniform and imagine it's left-handed Rod Beck or Randy Myers out there I suppose.

  • Amen to this. I guess it's gonna happen and I'm gonna have to suck it up but I really despise domestic abusers with every bone in my body and cannot stand them on any team I root for.

  • I just prefer they don't  acquire players that choke their wives/girlfriends.

  • So you'd rather go with Blown Save guy, when you can trade a prospect who is blocked for one piece that could get you over the top to the Big Dance? That is pretty old thinking. This is not a move that they cannot recover from if it goes south. But the upside is potentially historic.

The E-Man 8 hours 10 min ago view
  • I'd prefer it not happen too.

  • it's a hell of a blockbuster, but it's for a guy who pitches 1/3rd of a season at an extreme premium considering the guy being traded and if the early extension $$$ rumors are true.

it's one of those things that is bringing a guy at the top his game, but something is nagging me that this trade piece could have been put to better use.

a huge part of me is all "hell yeah, top of the line producer"...another part of me is "hmm, that for that?"

  • Still don't want. Kinda hope they can't work out the extension.

Charlie 8 hours 52 min ago view
  • obviously not, and I'm sure they did their homework...just hope they have some better answers than the Yankees

  • Chapman 12+ Career WAR. Currently 4.7:1 k-BB. With Rondon/Chapman/Strop/Nathan/Montgomery/Wood...Its the best pen I can recall other than Sutter or Lee Smith handling things themselves.

Its gonna suck if he gets injured, and it appears he's not the greatest of characters.

But, he'll have another Cuban to hang out with on the team.
