TCR Friday Vacation Notes

You may have thought I've been on vacation since May, but really just the last week and next. Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things when I return.

In the meantime, the Mets visit Wrigley for this weekends exhibition. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey and his surprising 2010 season start off the set against Randy "Sophomore Slump" Wells.

Fukudome, Castro, Byrd, Ramirez, Nady, Soto, Soriano, DeWitt, Wells

Pagan, Duda, Carter, Wright, Davis, Arias, Thole, Tejada, Dickey.

Gorzelanny has a hairline fracture in his pinkie and will miss his next start, hints are that he'll avoid the disabled list and pitch again this season.

Welington Castillo was called up.

The Cubs are currently tied for the 7th spot in the draft with the Nationals, a half game from the 6th spot owned by the Royals, 2 games from the 5th spot owned by the Dbacks and 3 games from the 4th spot owned by the Indians. I think the Pirates, O's and Mariners are pretty safe to take the first three picks. On the other side, it doesn't look the Cubs could do much worse than the 8th spot in the draft as they're 5.5 games behind the Astros and Brewers for the 9th spot.

Happy Weekend everyone.

David Wright's stats have come around, he's up to 22 hr and 87 rbi. The last time I checked (months ago) he wasn't hitting for any power.

Who the fuck is Rob G.?

Soriano's "I'm afraid of the wall" dance cost Wells 2 runs.

soriano defensive fail...

2-0 mets...

wonder if he'll follow it up by turning a double into a single by walking to 1st on a few balls put into play...

soriano bat win...

3-4 cubs...

the high strike is being called liberally today.

No reason to bean the ump then.

...some seriously weird wind gusts going on, too. wind is constant, but there's a lot of gusts whipping through the trees/flags.

x.nady out of f'n nowhere.

unf...that was kinda awesome.

hope soriano just got a good look at d.wright turning a groundout to 3rd into a single by actually...oh...running to 1st.

if dlee is watching in ATL he might want to take note, too.

So how is DPLee doing, you might ask, since he joined Atlanta?

Well, not so good... .214 .298 .310 .607

Braves are 6-6

Iowa has to win 3 of 4 from Memphis(Cards affiliate) this weekend to make playoffs.

AA Manager Bill Dancy also took the MOY award for the Southern League.

fun fact:

Here are two interesting hitting lines:

.255/.313/.503 with 19 homers and 50 RBI

.260/.318/.507 with 21 homers and 69 RBI

Line A in 353 PA's, Line B in 457 PA's

Colvin vs. Soriano

dcf has an expanded breakdown of sori/colvin in post #28 in the thread below this one.

hurrah innerwebs.

Not to mention you 3/44'd the I-Cubs series.

*knocks down a margarita*

*strolls back to the pool.*

Clay Rapawada called up by Rangers...

1.82 ERA this year in AAA, .120 BAA vs. lefties

Rapada was the PTBNL sent to Tigers at end of 2007 for Craig Monroe.

heh...dewitt has hit 5 of his 16 career HR's vs. the mets (47ab vs. 727ab)

via ye olde world o' roto...

yee flipping haw...

mark prior signs with TEX (minor league deal)

basically, he wants to play AFL or similar under a pro team's umbrella in order to be properly taken care of. he's not expected to play this month.

oh, the plight of privileged fans who yell at people about shit they don't know about...but they spend some money so it's their right.

these are the people that end up getting their ass kicked by others like them at their kid's little league game.

btw, those jetblue jets don't look 1/2 the pain in the ass as some of the Delta and American jets i've been on.

I had a dream last night that Hendry and some other Cub executive picked me up in a car to take me somewhere and during the car ride confirmed to me that they'd sign Kerry Wood to be a set-up man next year.

apparently this was the only question I thought to ask or remembered that I asked.

we'll see how my Carnac powers work...

I had a dream last night that Hendry's replacement picked me up in a car to take me somewhere and during the car ride confirmed to me that they'd sign Kerry Wood to be a set-up man next year.

I had a dream that I was watching a baseball game at Fenway Park with Terence Mann.

For anyone interested, the MLB.TV replay has Len interviewing Quade. If you can look past the obvious part where he's doing a little bit of pitching for the permanent job, for my money, he comes across as a pretty good dude.

Also, he said something interesting that I'd like to know if one of you can tell me more about. Len said Quade was a good listener and Quade said yeah even when I disagree with someone on stuff like sabremetrics. I almost said to myself "uh-oh" but then he said he is a closet numbers guy. Maybe Len's not? I don't quite get that. Does this mean he's a sabremetric guy or not?

I myself am not a sabremetrics guy at all but I feel like I want our next manager to be. The only real reason I'm not is that I'm too lazy to dig through stats and evaluate them, so as a fan I rely on my gut.

But a 21st century manager, in my opinion, should be a stats hound.

BTW, today was also Carlos Zambrano bobble head day.

There was a 7th inning ceremony where everyone placed their bobble heads on their seats to watch them explode.

Iowa Cubs win again, down 2-1 they scored a run in the straight innings to beat Memphis on Friday night.

Len's a big stat guy, just doesn't see them as the be-all/end-all that a lot of people do.

Ryan Theriot had 19 BB's with the Cubs in 412 PA's

already has 13 with the Dodgers in 128 PA's

309/384/382 line as a Dodger before Friday's game

Castro with the 2nd best OPS for a shortstop since the break behind Tulo.

  • Mrs Fowler would like a word with you.

  • It seems to be blowing a bit out to right but far less than yesterday and much cooler so shouldn't be too much of an effect.

Only one of our hrs last night was out because of the wind though I think.

  • Which direction is wind blowing today? With Lackey a groundball pitcher, it might help Cubs if it is blowing in today and a 2-1 game instead of a 10-6 game.

  • I have convinced myself that Hammel's second half struggles were due to minor injuries and fatigue so with the extra rest he is going to be lights out.

  • Benji Molina is out of lineup

  • Yes. Unfortunately, as many of us, I have seen this movie before. Do not care for Hammel, and unlike other managers Joe will pull the plug quickly at least. I hope before things were to get out of hand.

Many of us are like "abused spouses" or whatever - with this Cubs stuff. You get hurt so many times, the trust rapidly erodes.

If the Cubs can get to Lackey early, its gonna be a big key to a W or L.

  • No idea what will happen. The Cards are the Cards and they have come back from 2-1 holes twice in the last 4 years, so I don't see them in panic mode at all. If anything, I expect the Cubs to be pressing more than the Cards today.

I want the Cubs to win because it would be great for the city, and great for the fans. But more than anything, I want the Cubs to win so I can see this team play for at least one more week this year. Never enjoyed watching a team more than this year.

  • Just to remember how far we have come: last year's opening day lineup was Bonifacio, Lake, Castro, Rizzo, Olt, Castillo, Schierholz, Barney, and Samardzija. It's been a fun ride this year!

  • BRADSBEARD: I haven't noticed any new rule or a change in the interpretation of an existing rule happening in Advanced Instructs, I don't know what rules will be tested in the AFL, although almost all recent rule changes and new interpretations of existing rules (the home plate collision rule, replay, time clock between innings, et al) do get their start in the AFL.

  • Yep

  • AZ Phil: I've heard that the AFL will be testing out a new force out rule that would affect break-up plays (like the Utley play). Have you heard anything about this new rule and any details about it? Are they testing it out at the advanced instructs as well?

  • Pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but since I will be in NYC next week I want to confirm... If the Cubs were to advance to the NLCS, the winner of LAD/NYM would have home field based on being a division winner (as opposed to Cubs by virtue of better record), correct?

  • CUBSTER: This "hammy" is on the other leg I heard last night. See you at the ballyard today young man!

  • Lulz

  • Oh what do you know, Cubster? Go back to your day job.

--- Ducks, puts on Cardinals cap, runs.

  • Russell had a severe hamstring last year while with the A's system, forcing him to miss the first half of 2014. I've even wondered if his injury last year was a component of Billy Beane putting him on the trade market. He was quoted saying that last year's injury was a 10 out of 10 when it happened. Last night he said his hamstring soreness was a 1/1.5 out of 10. Hamstring injuries are tricky though, so I'd expect the medical team to be overly cautious here.
