Cub Pitching Not Too Great Today

San Francisco Giants 2010 1st round pick Gary Brown (Cal State - Fullerton) blasted a three-run home run to key a six-run 2nd inning, and the Giants went on to wallop the Cubs 17-6 in AZ Instructional League action at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa this afternoon.

The GOOD: Jae-Hoon Ha hit another HR over the left-centerfield fence onto 8th Street (a solo job in the 8th, his second HR in a week), Ryan Cuneo had two doubles (one of which was a two-run shot off the RF fence), and Gioskar Amaya and Oliver Zapata ripped back-to-back opposite field line-drive triples.

The BAD: Cub pitchers surrendered 17 runs on 17 hits (including three doubles and a HR), eight walks, two HBP, five wild pitches, and one balk. LHP Cam Greathouse (Cubs 2010 8th round pick out of Gulf Coast CC) started the game for the Cubs and had an especially poor outing, allowing seven runs (six ER) on six hits (including one HR) and two walks, and was only able to get two outs in the 2nd inning before being relieved.

The UGLY: Reggie Golden dropped not one but two fly balls in RF (actually one pop fly and one line drive), resulting in three unearned runs scoring. Not since Keith Moreland patrolled RF at Fitch Park has such humanity been seen.

BTW, an interesting tidbit about Reggie Golden is that he does something you usually only hear at a tennis match, and that is, he grunts (loudly) when he swings. And Reggie did hit/grunt two balls hard today, one a line-out (or “loud out”, so to speak) to CF, and the other an opposite-field laser line-drive double into the RF corner.

On the injury front, SS Hak-Ju Lee was removed from the game after he was seen limping gingerly to 1st base after dropping a single into left-center, one pitch after fouling a ball off his foot.

Here is today’s abridged box score (Cubs players only):

Here comes the 2003 Cubs segment on the "10th inning".

/grabs kleenex

short and sad.

poor bartman.

Oh...I interpreted "grabs a kleenex" in a much different way. I was a good year, despite the outcome.

Diiiiiiiiiiiiiisss-gusting!

Haha

That is all^

good chance, probably give it to Bud Black myself regardless if they make the playoffs. That was some crazy voodoo they accomplished down south this season.

I would bet Black wins it. If he makes the playoffs it should be a slam dunk. Dusty has got a lot of bad seasons under his belt so that the voters probably will be less likely to attribute their turn around to him.

There's a 36 in 38 chance it'll either be Black or Reds.

very well done, sir !!

Yikes. If Golden is having troubles in RF at Fall Instructs, imagine the circus act he would provide in RF at Wrigley, arguably the toughest RF to play in all of baseball. Although it is nice to see another XBH from the 18 year old. That's also disappointing about Greathouse getting rocked. He put up some very solid numbers at Boise this year (2.93 FIP, 10.07 K/9, 2.52 W/9, 70.4 GB%). Hopefully it was just a bad day and he bounces back nicely next time out. As always, thanks again for the update, AZ Phil.

- only 5 days to negotiate with your own free agents after World Series
- Arb offer day is moved up to Nov 23 from Dec 1st
- Players now have until Nov 30 to accept or not instead of Dec 7th
- Non-tender day is now Dec 2nd instead of Dec 12th

the reasons given for the changes was to extend the negotiating window so there are less FA's come Feb/March.

also apparently some stricter rules will be in place to avoid collusion and restrict negotiating through the media.

Also the Rule 5 draft may be moved up to Nov 20th, although not sure if that's been confirmed yet.

#Cubs lineup @ #Padres (9/30): DeWitt 2B, Castro SS, Byrd CF, Ramirez 3B, Nady 1B, Snyder RF, Soriano LF, Hill C, Gorzelanny P

It's kosher to play Snyder against a playoff contender, but not Welington Castillo over the inferior Koyie Hill? I hate the unwritten rules of baseball sometimes.

RIP welington castillo

btw, fuku is sore so he'd probably be in RF and leading off vs. the righty if healthy.

  • On the other hand, Pries won his first start for Iowa, only giving up two HRs in the process. This trade has got some legs yet!

  • KB now with 0 RBI in his last 10 games and 1 in his last 15, despite having 19 hits in his last 15 games and raising his batting average from .278 to .286 over that span.

Maybe have Zobrist hit 2 and KB hit 4?

Also -- no HR in the last 15 games -- time for a bunch. Starting tomorrow.

  • Down a run. Fowler on first. Nobody out. KB singles to left, Fowler makes it to third, perfect throw from Cabrera nails KB trying to stretch for 2nd.

So, instead of 1st & 3rd and no out, you have 3rd with one out. It was a perfect throw, but why take the chance with 3-4-5 hitters coming up?

  • Must be a Cub thing - our lefties can;t get lefties out.

  • Splitting hairs, but Jake's pitch was poor execution, while KB's play was a poor decision (and the 2nd time he got thrown out trying to stretch in the game). Poor execution happens. Poor decisions are preventable. Speaking of poor decisions -- Baez's steal of 3rd made absolutely no sense.

  • Didn't Jake cost them the game with a pitch to Frazier?

  • Not a good decision by Bryant in the 9th. That may have cost them the game.

  • the 'crosstown classic' sure has lost it's magic with interleague. the excitement level is barely noticable...maybe it's a bit more hype in the city, itself.
