Cubs Projected 25-Man Roster

The Cubs are a wasteland of news at the moment. Let's look at how Project .500 is doing...

Starting 8 (total guesses right now):

vs. righties: DeWitt, Castro, Pena, Ramirez, Colvin, Soriano, Byrd, Soto

Bench: Fukudome, Baker, Hill, Barney, Guyer or other outfielder

vs. lefties: Baker, Castro, Ramirez, Pena, Byrd, Soriano, Soto, Fukudome

Bench: Colvin, DeWitt, Hill, Barney, Guyer or other outfielder

Starting 5: Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Gorzelanny, Cashner or Silva

Bullpen: Marmol, Wood, Marshall, Grabow, Cashner or Silva, Samardzija, 1 of Russell, Caridad, Berg, Maine, Rice, Diamond, Coleman or Chad Fox.

The hints from Levine are that Colvin will get the bulk of playing time over Fukudome who would sort of super-sub throughout the week. Personally Fukudome is about the only leadoff option the team has right now against righties, so we'll see if that changes over spring training. My guess at a lineup versus righties is just that, a guess. Managers tend to like alternating lefties and righties so I could see that as an option.

The better bet and what I'd try with the current personal is Fukudome, Castro, Pena, Ramirez, Soto, Soriano, Byrd, DeWitt and I think spots 3-7 could all be shifted depending on the hot hand. You could also try Fukudome, Castro, Ramirez, Soto, Pena, Soriano, Byrd, DeWitt to break up the righties in the middle of the order(and have Pena and Soriano leave a shit load of runners on base) and it does depend if Aramis rebounds this season (let's hope for a rebound contract year).

The bullpen actually looks pretty good at the moment, but those have a way of being unpredictable. The rotation, well guess it depends on which Z we get and if Wells bounces back a little. It's solld, but definitely behind the Cards, Brewers and most likely Reds at this point.

Comments

What does this have to do with the Bears? More seriously, it looks like Project .500 is proceeding rather nicely, although it could be a struggle to get there. I think Colvin will have to earn that bench spot, though.

Jacos, I agree. When I saw that list, I thought 81 wins would be amazing. Considering they will likely be the 4th best team in the division, I think 77 wins is about the best we can hope for as the team is currently assembled. Amazing what a $140 MM payroll gets you. Thanks Teflon Jim!! Sign him up for another 3 years. Fire Hendry!

MANNY! Enjoy Penn State in a Bowl game! Guess JoPA is gonna have to die on the field before they replace him, huh? Go Big Ten! Go Bears! Go Cutler! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! I'm going 74-88 for the 2011 Cubs. Just am not confident much after the first two starters.

I have posted this before, but here are what I think will probably be the most likely Opening Day rosters throughout the Cubs organization in 2011, as things stand right now and very much subject to change (trades, DL, etc)... * bats or throws left # bats both CHICAGO CUBS PITCHERS: Justin Berg Andrew Cashner Ryan Dempster * Tom Gorzelanny * John Grabow Carlos Marmol * Sean Marshall Jeff Samardzija Carlos Silva Randy Wells Kerry Wood Carlos Zambrano CATCHERS: # Koyie Hill Geovany Soto INFIELDERS: Jeff Baker Darwin Barney Starlin Castro * Blake DeWitt * Carlos Pena Aramis Ramirez OUTFIELDERS: Marlon Byrd * Tyler Colvin * Kosuke Fukudome * Sam Fuld Alfonso Soriano IOWA PITCHERS: David Cales Esmailin Caridad Chris Carpenter Casey Coleman Thomas Diamond * John Gaub Jay Jackson * Scott Maine Marcos Mateo * James Russell Brian Schlitter Jeff Stevens CATCHERS: Welington Castillo Robinson Chirinos INFIELDERS: * Matt Camp * Bryan Lahair * Scott Moore Nate Samson # Bobby Scales (player-coach) Marquez Smith Tony Thomas OUTFIELDERS: * James Adduci Brandon Guyer * Brad Snyder Ty Wright TENNESSEE PITCHERS: Chris Archer * Jeffrey Beliveau * Ryan Buchter Alberto Cabrera Rafael Dolis Ty'Relle Harris Trey McNutt * Brooks Raley * Chris Rusin Aaron Shafer Kyle Smit * Luke Sommer CATCHERS: * Steve Clevenger Chris Robinson INFIELDERS: # Marwin Gonzalez Junior Lake D. Interesting AZ PHIL: Please give me your .02 on Justin Berg. What does he have that you believe would give him enough to make the big club (I know your list is subject to change, of course)? I just don't see it the times I have seen him at Wrigley. Perhaps he was more effective earlier in the year, but IIRC, he got sent back down after getting shelled a few outings in a row? I mean aren't any of the AA or AAA guys (not including the projected starters) better than Berg right now? Or do they suffer even worse control problems? Also, with respect to Diamond, what's his contract situation and what is it about his skill-set that the Cubs want to keep him around? Cheapness? It seems as if his good days, as few as there were, are behind him even though he was a #1 Rangers draft pick. Yes, I know he throws in the high 90's, but batters were not fooled at all. What say ye PHIL??

What say ye PHIL?? ======================================= E-MAN: There is one spot open on the Cubs pitching staff going into Spring Training, and I think Justin Berg is the front-runner (at this time) because the Cubs like his durability and make-up. He wants the ball and can throw every day. When the Cubs made call-ups last September, they did not recall Caridad, Stevens, Gaub, or Schlitter, but they did bring up Berg. That said, there are a number of candidates for that one spot, and while Berg probably has the inside track going into Spring Training, I would say Caridad, Russell, Mateo, and Maine would probably have just about as good a chance of making the Cubs Opening Day roster as Berg, Marcos Mateo threw the ball pretty well in the DWL, and he also pitched OK in September, so he could very take the job. Or somebody else not on the radar might surprise the Cubs in Spring Training and pitch his way onto the 25-man roster and into the bullpen. I'm sure the Cubs will be interested to see if Angel Guzman can comeback from his shoulder surgery, although it's probably a long-shot. As for Thomas Diamond, he has one minor league option left, and will likely be in the starting rotation at AAA Iowa again in 2011, although he is also is a candidate to get traded in a deal for a minor league player or pitcher who is not on a 40-man roster. Diamond pitched for Cubs Assistant GM Randy Bush when Bush was head baseball coach at the University of New Orleans, and I think that is the main reason the Cubs claimed him off waivers when they did. Diamond does not throw as hard as he did prior to his arm problems, but he does rack up the strikeouts and looks like he could be a #5 starter on a few MLB clubs. (He was the starting pitcher for the PCL in the AAA All-Star Game last July). While I think he probably is best-suited to be a starter, he likely won't get that opportunity again with the Cubs, so he will have to compete for the one open bullpen spot in ST.

DLee realizes his options are disappearing and takes a 1 year deal with Orioles. O's have improved quite a bit this offseason. I don't know if they can realistically make the playoffs in that division but the are much better. DLee, Brian Roberts, JJ Hardy, and Mark Reynolds replaces last year's INF of Wigginton, Roberts, Izturis, and Tejada. They have a decent young OF, Wieters at catcher, Racist DH Luke Scott, and a bunch of good looking young pitchers.

unfortunately the O's still have to go out there and have people throw baseballs to other hitters when they're not at bat. btw...speaking of low-end teams...the A's have once again forgotten you need bats to back up killer pitching. i think they have 1, maybe 2 guys, capable of 20+ homers on their team and they're matsui + willingham. you'd think they'd "get" by now that having a slew of guys who can take walks, but can't run well, need a little help getting through the basepaths. A's are also out there supposedly looking more bullpen help, too. they're building a true pitching and defense team out there.

I just love all of you guys. Yes even Real Neal. I for one enjoys RN's steadfastness. To me, that's what life is about. Guys like Real Neal, in a bar, a guy you almost want to bloody the teeth of, but, you know you can't, because he talks stuff in your face that makes sense and you go, ok, at least it makes me think. I want to blast him open, but dammit, he's just too fun to talk to. So, Happy New Years to you all. Even the Real Neals of the world. Oh, and for all you young Cub fans out there, relax, and enjoy Project .500 as it winds its way around the next century. You will find a Cubs hero to latch onto. And then, you will enjoy bliss.

Yes but many years from today Corey Wooten will be the answer to a trivia question, lets just hope he has a few more moments in his career.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...
