Omening Day?

It is a cold, miserable day in Des Moines. The steady rain may change to snow by the time the Iowa Cubs are scheduled to open their home season at 7:05 tonight versus the Memphis Redbirds, the team that caught them at the tape last Labor Day and squeezed past into the PCL playoffs. Ironically, that change in the form of precipitation might increase the chances of the game being played. Just in case the game tonight gets called I had a couple of hot dogs for lunch.

The I-Cubs beat the Isotopes on getaway day yesterday in Albuquerque, 10-6, behind five RBI from holdover Bobby Scales to split their season-opening road swing through Texas and New Mexico at 4-4. At the plate Tony Campana, Lou Montanez and Scales are off to hot starts. Fernando Perez has drawn eight walks and swiped three bases and Bryan LaHair has already knocked in nine runs. There hasn't yet been much pitching to which any of those responsible would sign their names. Chris Carpenter has fanned eight and walked but two so far in five innings spread over three appearances.

Here's alink to a new feature at the I-Cub website this year that's a nice one-stop daily clearinghouse for media reports: http://iowa.cubs.milb.com/news/page.jsp?ymd=20110317&content_id=16994120&vkey=news_t451&fext=.jsp&sid=t451

No doubt there are better days ahead weather-wise and this club deserves some breaks in that department. Last year the team was 4th out of 16 in the PCL in attendance despite that Des Moines is 14th in the league in population.

Weather relenting, J.R. Mathes starts for Iowa tonight. It feels like he's been here as long as Wakefield's been in Boston, maybe longer if you asked him.

I'm fortunate to live close to a nice minor league ball park. That's where I take the munchkins. If shit gets real, we can leave and I'm not too upset about missing a game. Plus... great seats for $9

Actually according to the Cubs website, it's $40-260. The lower end is a nice deal, although at the bottom of the page it says that taxes and ticket fees are not included. I just threw the cheapest set of tickets into the cart to see how much the fees add, it jumps to $63.48, plus another $4.00 in order processing fees. So that $40 package of tickets is $67.48 (and you still have to pay for parking or the train). http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ticketing/familypack.jsp

Their math doesn't make sense. It claims the taxes are: 12% city of Chicago and amusement tax (unless these are 2 different taxes, each at 12%?), which should be $4.80 and 9% cook county sales tax - $3.60 plus $4.00 ticket delivery fee. That's 12.80 in fees, not the $27.48 they're charging. So the "convenience fee" is almost $15.00? Someone is stealing even more money from fans.

gonna go see 'the conspirator' instead...

omaha also rained out in opener @ new park; guess they didn't even have to leave town to chase this storm...also, besides storms the chasers are also chasing the whole division after going 2-6 in 1st week; that team is supposed to be loaded w/ future royals though...

SS Castro, 2B Barney, CF Byrd, 3B Ramy, 1B Pena, LF Soriano, RF Colvin, C Soto, P Garza J. Chacin for the Rox Coleman vs. Hammel tomorrow Dempster vs. A. Johnson Sunday Rox at 10-2 and best record in NL.

garza @COL...something tells me his ERA isn't gonna improve too much today even if it does happen to get better.

cubs are 6-6 last 10 games 5-5 road record - 3-3 home record - 3-3 project .500 is going damn well.

agonz (BOS) deal finalized..."$154 million over seven years from 2012 through 2018" (22m average).

Peoria & Iowa postponed, Smokies delayed lineup in case they play Jackson 8, Flaherty 6, LeMahieu 4, Spencer 0, Vitters 5, Wright 7, Ridling 3, Lalli 2, Adduci 9 Cabrera P Daytona: Crawford LF, Cerda 3B, Ha CF, Bour 1B, Castillo C, Burgess RF, Brenly DH, Lake SS, Macias 2B, RHP Wallach

Korey playing for Blue Jays tonight, batting 2nd

h.street unavailable tonight vs. cubs (tired, night off)...

I bet the Cardinals are thrilled that the Sox are paying Gonzalez more money per year than they offered Pujols.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
