Omening Day?

It is a cold, miserable day in Des Moines. The steady rain may change to snow by the time the Iowa Cubs are scheduled to open their home season at 7:05 tonight versus the Memphis Redbirds, the team that caught them at the tape last Labor Day and squeezed past into the PCL playoffs. Ironically, that change in the form of precipitation might increase the chances of the game being played. Just in case the game tonight gets called I had a couple of hot dogs for lunch.

The I-Cubs beat the Isotopes on getaway day yesterday in Albuquerque, 10-6, behind five RBI from holdover Bobby Scales to split their season-opening road swing through Texas and New Mexico at 4-4. At the plate Tony Campana, Lou Montanez and Scales are off to hot starts. Fernando Perez has drawn eight walks and swiped three bases and Bryan LaHair has already knocked in nine runs. There hasn't yet been much pitching to which any of those responsible would sign their names. Chris Carpenter has fanned eight and walked but two so far in five innings spread over three appearances.

Here's alink to a new feature at the I-Cub website this year that's a nice one-stop daily clearinghouse for media reports: http://iowa.cubs.milb.com/news/page.jsp?ymd=20110317&content_id=16994120&vkey=news_t451&fext=.jsp&sid=t451

No doubt there are better days ahead weather-wise and this club deserves some breaks in that department. Last year the team was 4th out of 16 in the PCL in attendance despite that Des Moines is 14th in the league in population.

Weather relenting, J.R. Mathes starts for Iowa tonight. It feels like he's been here as long as Wakefield's been in Boston, maybe longer if you asked him.

Snyder called up, Fukudome must be going to DL

whoops, false alarm. Tweet says Iowa Cubs call up Snyder.

Carry on.

Replaces Ty Wright, who moved down to Tenn. yesterday.

Iowa game called btw.

cheaper than anything you can get at Dodgers Stadium at least. Easily looking at close to $100 for food, drink, parking to take my munchkins when Cubs visit in May.

4 tickets for $40 through $108 with food and drink, various sections.

I'm fortunate to live close to a nice minor league ball park. That's where I take the munchkins. If shit gets real, we can leave and I'm not too upset about missing a game. Plus... great seats for $9

minors do have their charms...

I think that could be read with a meaning you did not intend.

I think that was intentional. Those with kids understand the 'charms' (both good and bad) of dragging small kids out into public.

"If shit gets real"

What? Do your kids beat up random Giants' fans?

Not random ones, they're smart enough to target the weak.

Only if they are asking for it by wearing Giants gear.

Actually according to the Cubs website, it's $40-260. The lower end is a nice deal, although at the bottom of the page it says that taxes and ticket fees are not included. I just threw the cheapest set of tickets into the cart to see how much the fees add, it jumps to $63.48, plus another $4.00 in order processing fees. So that $40 package of tickets is $67.48 (and you still have to pay for parking or the train).

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ticketing/fam...

i do wish they'd stop calling them convenience fees.

Their math doesn't make sense.

It claims the taxes are: 12% city of Chicago and amusement tax (unless these are 2 different taxes, each at 12%?), which should be $4.80
and 9% cook county sales tax - $3.60

plus $4.00 ticket delivery fee. That's 12.80 in fees, not the $27.48 they're charging.

So the "convenience fee" is almost $15.00?

Someone is stealing even more money from fans.

gonna go see 'the conspirator' instead...

omaha also rained out in opener @ new park; guess they didn't even have to leave town to chase this storm...also, besides storms the chasers are also chasing the whole division after going 2-6 in 1st week; that team is supposed to be loaded w/ future royals though...

SS Castro, 2B Barney, CF Byrd, 3B Ramy, 1B Pena, LF Soriano, RF Colvin, C Soto, P Garza

J. Chacin for the Rox

Coleman vs. Hammel tomorrow
Dempster vs. A. Johnson Sunday

Rox at 10-2 and best record in NL.

Since 1946, only one pitcher (Rick Sutcliffe 23) has struck out more hitters over his first two starts with the #Cubs.

garza @COL...something tells me his ERA isn't gonna improve too much today even if it does happen to get better.

Not into Pena these days.

Maybe he has to play when his buddy pitches?

Gonna be great seeing his 0-4 night, tonight.

2 strikeouts is a given

Rockies lineup

Fowler CF, Herrera 2B, Gonzalez LF, God SS, Helton 1B, Smith RF, Lopez 3B, Iannetta C, Chacin P

We have Darwin, they have God. A battle for the ages.

Nicely played. Come again.

Probably just making up for the nasties from the press conference after Wednesday's game.

cubs are 6-6

project .500 is going damn well.

So Carlos Pena really IS a bargain.

Adam Dunn is a bargain. Pena is the Carlos Silva of bargains.

I bet the Cardinals are thrilled that the Sox are paying Gonzalez more money per year than they offered Pujols.

  • if you save the lumber from your constant trips to the cross you can build your very own safe space to view my posts.

  • @billybucks you speak the truth and it's precisely what me and others have been saying for over a year. It's an unfortunate hitch in his game, one that seems correctable, but so far has not been corrected. Also a hitch that is going over 3 seasons now and no one has been able to truly exploit in any meaningful way (except sort of the Royals in that Wild Card game although they stole plenty of bases off the other pitchers in that game and the rest of the playoff teams the rest of that run).

  • AZBOBBOP: Nothing new on Oscar de la Cruz. Still shut down with elbow issues.

  • I nominate Sean Rodriguez.

  • who's this guy being all reasonable and stuff?

pick someone on the board who's literally worse than hitler and start screaming about it. cubs 2016!

  • It's not pathetic -- it's what we've been waiting for!

  • Yikes -- I was off the site for a short while and it blew up.

Gentlemen -- it is apparent that Lester has a weakness in his game. Everybody knows about it. He has, apparently, tried to work on it, but without success. Fortunately, he is talented enough that he is able to largely overcome his shortcoming.

I am amazed that other teams don't try to bunt on him, but, as has been said, bunting is not a skill many players have.

  • Interesting that Hendricks is going tomorrow -- so, he wasn't really "skipped", just moved back a few days so Jake and Lester could deal against the Pirates. I'm OK with that.

  • PHIL: Thanks for your updates.

One thing that we are seeing come to bear is that Theo's obvious strategy has been to stockpile young, power arms in the lower levels while owning bats that are much nearer to MLB ready - then, buying the arms the org needs in order to be highly competitive.

  • It's fun to watch the cards shit the bed anytime of the year

  • I really thought he would be the one getting the call-up. This must be a favor to the player from Theo.

  • I'm already scoreboard watching and it's only the start of May. How pathetic is that?

  • Glad to see Hudson having another good outing. He is so impressive for an 18/yo. Surprised to see Shane V. still there. I thought he would be gone this week. I can picture today. Thanks Phil!

  • stats don't lie. *nods*

  • 2016 Cubs are 0-1 on day after Trans recaps, 20-5 in other games. I enjoy his recaps, but there is a price to pay.

  • He's the Albert Pujols of recaps and has gotten a huge contract based on past performance. He doesn't need to do anything the rest of his days and he'll still get love.
