Giants Take Cubs Deep for Sweep

Charles Jones, Joseph Staley, and Gabriel Cornier cracked home runs to power the EXST Giants to a doubleheader sweep over the EXST Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action at Indian School Park in Scottsdale this morning, winning 5-3 on Field #1, and 8-1 on Field #2.

The games were played simultaneously on adjacent fields.

Both games were pre-scheduled as seven-inning affairs, but the game on Field #2 was extended an extra inning to allow Cubs and Giants pitchers to get their scheduled work.

RHP Rob Whitenack made his debut at AA Tennessee today, throwing six shutout innings (80 pitches - 54 strikes) and allowing just three hits, with no walks, three strikeouts and a 9/2 GO/F0. Whitenack left the game with Tennessee ahead 1-0, but he got a "no decision" thanks to a blown save by Smokies closer David Cales in the bottom of the 9th. 25-year old LHRP Luke Sommer was released to make room for Whitenack on the Tennessee roster. Sommer was drafted by the Cubs as an outfielder out of the U. of San Francisco in 2007 (30th round), but was converted to a pitcher his second year in the organization. In fact, I was at Fitch Park the day he became a pitcher, just about exactly three years ago.

What is Whitenack's ceiling/projected date to reach MLB? ================================= JUMBO: With pitchers, you never know. Pitchers can move much faster thah position players. And once a prospect gets to AA, anything can happen at any time. Whitenack was drafted the same year as Trey McNutt (2009), but Whitenack is a year older (Whitenack was drafted as a college junior and is now 22, while McNutt was drafted out of a JC and is 21). So in terms of pro experience, McNutt and Whitenack are comparable, although McNutt made it to AA Tennessee in his first full season of pro ball (2010) and got an NRI to Spring Training, while Whitenack has just now arrived at AA. But Whitenack is actually probably closer to the big leagues than McNutt right now, just because he throws strikes more consistently.

Submitted by bartlettcubsfan on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 4:25pm. hey, phil. seems like jin young kim havent pitch for awhile. is he still on EXST cubs or is he injured? =============================== BART: Between the rehab guys and the nine pitchers that just arrived from the Cubs Dominican Academy last week, there are so many pitchers at Fitch Park right now that they can't get enough work for everybody, so some of them throw sim games at Fitch when the rest of the team is on the road, and then some days they add an extra game (one home game and one road game played simultaneously), too, just to get more innings for the pitchers. That's why they need three pitching coaches at EXST (David Rosario, Rick Tronerud, and Frank Castillo, plus Minor League Pitching Coordinator Dennis Lewallyn whenever he's in town). I don't know how they keep track of all the pitchers down here without losing somebody at the mall, but somehow they manage to do it.

Finally some promising news... "The Cubs' fifth starter conundrum got a reprieve Wednesday when the game with the Rockies was postponed because of rain to 1:20 p.m. June 27. Manager Mike Quade still hasn't said whether he plans to give James Russell a fourth try as the fifth starter. But the rainout allowed him to move Casey Coleman tentatively to Sunday in Arizona, with Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano and Matt Garza throwing the first three games of the series. That gives the Cubs an extra day to think about bringing up a minor-league pitcher for Monday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Hey Phil, Wilson Contreras and Dustin Geiger are intriguing prospects at the dish, but what would you say about them defensively? Is it an automatic that they will stay at 3B, or will they have to put a lot of work in to stick there? Also, how fit is Reggie Golden looking?

If he ever starts to hit (and hit with power) he might be moved to RF. Wilson Contreras is a better all-around defensive 3rd baseman than Geiger, and it looks like he can stay there. Contreras is also a much better hitter at this point, AND he has HR power. (BTW, Contreras was a catcher when the Cubs signed him, but they almost immediately moved him to 3B).

lulz...the little girl on the left almost laughs a few times at the 50-ish+ second mark when they start talking the sex stuff. that said, this whole thing is just an activist move. it's not like they're asking for $5,000,000 or even expecting all the demands they make to be considered seriously, much less actually get them. it's kinda in the same field as jesse jackson running for president...he never remotely expected to win, but he had some issues he wanted to push and his relative fame gave him an opportunity to push those views/concerns. if g.alfred didn't have her relative fame and it was some other lawyer the whole thing probably wouldn't make it past the sport pages. i got no problem with it, really...or rather, i really don't give a crap. mcdowell should realize/know/duh that the ATL braves are 100% a family attraction baseball franchise, though. they're one of the most family-marketed franchises in the whole league.

The baseball bat demonstration was the weirdest thing. In context, it did NOT help me understand the incident better by one iota -- however, it DID look as though Quinn and Gloria Allred were simulating a sexual act together (even repeating a second time for the cameras) while Quinn's wife stood by watching them. What a weird, perverted vibe that created. The baseball bat part is either going to be put into some Youtube mash-up rap video or else someone is just not paying attention.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
