Cubs Use Their Cabezas to Beat Kazmir

Yaniel Cabezas singled twice, doubled, scored two runs, and threw out two opposing base-stealers, and four Cubs pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter, as a split squad of EXST Cubs edged the EXST Angels 2-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action at Fitch Park Field #2 in Mesa this morning.

The game was extended an extra inning to allow Cubs and Angels pitchers to get their scheduled work.

Cubs pitchers Austin Reed and Luis Liria combined to throw six no-run, no hit innings to get things started, retiring 18 of the first 19 men they faced. When Reed is good (that is, when he throws strikes), he is VERY good, and Liria should probably be at Peoria.

It seems to help the younger pitchers when experienced catchers like Chad Noble (played four years of Big Ten baseball at Northwestern) and Yaniel Cabezas (catcher for Cuban Junior National Team) are behind the plate.

Meanwhile, the Cubs were facing MLB LHP Scott Kazmir (15-day DL – back) for the second time in a week, in what was probably his final Extended Spring Training rehab outing. Kazmir threw 5.1 IP (75 pitches), allowing one run (earned) on three hits, a walk, and two HBP, with two strikeouts and a 7/6 GO/FO.

The Cubs scored their only run off Kazmir in the bottom of the second. Yaniel Cabezas led-off with a single, Jose Valdez was hit by a pitch, and Dustin Harrington singled sharply to CF to load the bases with no outs. Pin-Chieh Chen then grounded into a 4-6 FC that scored Cabezas from 3rd.

The Cubs scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the 6th (after Kazmir had left the game). Cabezas doubled to RF with one out, moved-up to 3rd base on a ground out, and scored on a Dustin Harrington RBI single.

While one squad of EXST Cubs played the Angels at Fitch Park, the other squad traveled to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort to play the EXST Rockies. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide a report on the EXST Cubs road game, since the two games were played simultaneously ten miles apart. (To get enough innings for all of the pitchers at Extended Spring Training, the Cubs are scheduling EXST split squad road game/home game dates several times this Spring).

Here is today’s abridged box score for the game at Fitch Park (Cubs players only):

1. Kyung-Min Na, CF: 0-5 (1-U, 6-3, 6-3, 3-U, E-4)
2. Wes Darvill, SS: 1-4 (E-1, BB, 4-3, L-7, 1B)

5. Yaniel Cabezas, DH-C: 3-5 (1B, L-9, 2B, 1B, 6-4-3 DP, 2 R)
6. Jose Valdez, LF: 0-3 (HBP, F-9, 4-3, K)
7. Dustin Harrington, 3B: 2-3 (1B, HBP, 1B, F-9, RBI)

4. Willengton Cruz: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 2 K, 1 GIDP, 32 pitches (19 strikes), 2/0 GO/FO

RF Jesus Morelli threw out runner 9-5 trying to advance from 1st to 3rd on single to RF

WEATHER: Sunny with temperatures in the 80’s

Thanks for these daily reports. I always enjoy reading them.

why the plummet in attendance from 17 to 6? from your description, couldn't be the weather...

The ice cream man probably drew away half the crowd :)

It's the economy.

MIKE W: It was an early start time (9 AM local).

was wellemeyer that big a draw the other day? speaking of whom, your estimate of the chances that he [or jackson] supplants russell as soon as next monday...

MIKE W: I don't think Wellemeyer is stretched-out enough yet to be a starter, although he could probably work out of the bullpen today (the Cubs being in town and all) if the Cubs wanted him to do that.

or davis?

Or Ortiz.

or davis?

MIKEV W: Doug Davis will probably be making his final EXST start on Saturday and will try and throw five innings or 75 pitches (whichever comes first). Then I would expect him to go to Iowa for two or three starts to see how his stuff plays in the PCL.

Just remember that Davis really sucked with Milwaukee last year, although he wasn't 100% physically, either.

that's a picture of Matt Purke, apparently he likes to wear his hat like that all the time. it's a trivial thing in the grand scheme of life, but it does make me root for him to undergo shoulder surgery.

i know the guy gets results, but he has a busy upper body pitching motion to match, imo.

deception is one thing, but he's got a lot of motion up top delivering the ball...long behind his back and flings it. the ball "explodes" out of his arm, but how long will his body let him do it? he also pitches almost exclusively from the far right side of the pitching rubber, too. weird guy, imo.

don't like it either but compared to wilson's beard thing i'll take it...

brian wilson and his beard need to take a break from being on 3/4 of every MLB-related commercial. i'm a bit burnt out on the dude.

Rock the Kazmir.

Dallas Beeler has a strained oblique. My guess: Liria or Loosen to Peoria until Beeler is ready to return.

Do you think Cabeza is any kind of prospect?

Do you think Cabeza is any kind of prospect?

HAGSAG: I would say he has some upside and it will be interesting to see how he develops, but I wouldn't put him in a Top 15 (or even Top 30) prospects list at this point.

How come nobody told me Korey Patterson is on Toronto? And wearing a beard.

I did. Didn't notice the beard though.

Fukudome RF, Castro SS, Baker 2B, Ramirez 3B, Pena 1B, Byrd CF, Colvin LF, Hill C, Dempster P

CY CF, Johnson 2B, Upton RF, Drew SS, Montero C, Mora 3B, Branyan 1B, Parra LF, Enright P

something like 16 RBI's over 4 games that Sosa did back in 2002.

The juice is loose!

The Cubs have yet to make a decision on the fifth starter. Casey Coleman is available in the bullpen tonight but is tentatively scheduled to pitch Sunday, so Quade said he's hesitant to use him. There's also a chance Coleman could start Monday in Los Angeles, in which case the Cubs would have to call up a minor leaguer for Sunday or go with another reliever that isn't stretched out yet.

Jeff Samardzija is not an option, Quade said, though Justin Berg and Marcos Mateo are longshots. Triple-A Iowa pitcher Jay Jackson would be on his normal five-day schedule if he was called up to pitch Sunday.

since I'm going to the game Monday, I place my vote for Jay Jackson's first major league start.

That report sounds like Quade doesn't have a clue what the hell he's doing.

Tonight was all the proof we needed to know without question that Quade is completely lost. He needs to be fired immediately. I don't care who is the manager the rest of the year, but he needs to leave right now.

Tonight was all the proof we needed to know without question that Quade is completely lost.

Huh? How was it Quade's fault that Dempster sucked?

Where the fuck was Quade in the first inning? Having tea? He waits until, oh, I don't know, after the game is over to make a pitching move.

Back in the old days, when managers actually watched the games they were managing, when a starter loads the bases with zero outs, and then gives up a grand slam, the bullpen gets to work. And when the starter then walks two more, he yanks the motherfucker. Instead, Quade watches while Dempster walks another guy, then watches while he gives up another hit, then watches while he gives up another hit, gives up another 3 runs after the grand slam, and takes him out with 2 more guys on base.

We've seen this every start Dempster has made. Quade leaves him out there too long. And we've seen it with other pitchers. How about having Jeff Stevens throw 90 pitches in relief?

Quade doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.

i think i saw Carlos Silva in a Turkish bath in Ankara...where all soft tossing 280 lb pitchers work out to prepare for intense towel drill work, the next step in Rothschild rehab...

Nice soft towels though in Turkey!

bases loaded ARZ, 0 out, bottom 1st...what a great way to start a late game. go dumpster.

grand slam s.drew...awesome...still 0 outs. go dumpster.

go dumpster... my fantasy team appreciates you!

And he's our ace? Long season from hell.

he went 0-2 on upton and ended up hbp him...he went 0-2 on drew and gives up a HR. neat stuff...

9 HR in 31 ip. wow.

bases loaded, 1 out...this game is mega-dildos.

pitcher gets an RBI single...still 1 out...mega-mega-dildos.

2rbi single...still 1 out...7 runs given up, men on 1st/2nd...night is over for dumpster

0.1 ip

wait til the earned runs and the loss kicks in...tough one.

My fantasy team does as well. ERA of 189.00 for the day. Awesome!

Heh... I was serious. I don't have Dempster. I have Stephen Drew! :)

Dempster's solution to his 5th inning problems...don't pitch well enough to get there.

Rob's luck, he'll get to see dumpster pitch on monday. tonight was dumps side session...

lol. Dempster to the DL is my guess, his vagina is enlarged.

HAHAHA! You get it? He sucked today, so he must be a woman! Hilarious.

Oh wait...

You love Dempster, Hilarious!

Huh? Where did I say anything about loving Dempster? Actually, a few comments up I am pretty sure that I said he sucked today.

But referring to his "vagina" is just obnoxious.

this game is mad ass dildos.

now the replacement (berg) is hurt...took a comebacker off the hip.

coleman might have to pitch least dumpster can go monday.

berg is staying in...damn.

That's funny, there used to be a store here called Mad Ass Dildos.

so much fear.

Quade is completely overmatched by the requirements to be a big league manager. It's a shame, I like him, but he sucks. He's not prepared, has no plan, very slow to react to what's actually happening in the game, and he's just not a big league manager. Ricketts needs to fire him if Hendry won't, and fire Hendry while he's at it. This team is a laughingstock.

Dude, I don't know about "totally overmatched".

His and Hendry's most reliable pitcher, and someone who has generally been pretty solid over the last several years, suddenly forgot to pitch in every start in 2011.

The "strength" of the team, starting pitching supposedly, is now not.

...0-8. neat.

k.hill HR...lulz.

You just answered your own question.

We need to name this moment.
The first point of the year were the game causes us to realize, "yes this is a bad team."

Our opening day starter shelled and Jeff Baker is batting third.

I suggest the Neifi Point.

this game is horrible...

The Great Cubdom Enlightenment of 2011.

I mean okay, Demp has a bad game (something we're seeing a lot of lately) (and granted, I didn't watch a bit of this stupid thing), but to only score 2 runs on a night when Barry Enright (did I even spell that correctly?) starts for the opposing team? Seriously, guys?

i'm a little tired of seeing c.pena pound groundouts to the right side of the least pop out at the warning track or something.

his power should come around, but it's not showing signs of showing up any time soon.

Adam Dunn went 0-4 .162.

Is that the barometer to see who made a worse signing, between Cubs or Sox?

No, it's already been established the Cubs guy on a cheaper and shorter contract is worse than the White Sox guy who has batted equally as poorly and can't field. I don't really get it, either, but thought the update was amusing because crunch always thought the Cubs would win the WS if they added Adam Dunn.

JAKE FOX update-
.143 /.217 /.381
1 hr 1 rbi

Hey he's almost up to Carlos and Adam! =P

Actually, would The Hoff option have been better than Pena at $10MM?

Have they started to play in Japan yet?

.216 .241 .490 with 4 HR's in 54 PA's.

"thought the update was amusing because crunch always thought the Cubs would win the WS if they added Adam Dunn."

wrong. i've never been a dunn fan.

i've mentioned "who the hell is adam dunn" in the past when people brought him up...that's about the extent of it.

i'm not going to get into the reasons i don't like dunn...he's not junk...still, he's not a NL player, imo.

Something else you've never been is able to pick up on sarcasm.

that's quite...interesting.

Good job!

Sarcasm is easily detectable through a comments section.

sarcasm in text form is fun stuff...lot more bad ways to do it than good ways.

Hehe yeah. Does mine qualify as a bad or good way? hmm...

from now on all sarcasm on TCR should be bold and italics with a warning that sarcasm is incoming, imo.

and the site could use a few flaming skull animated .gifs sprinkled around.

What?! Not its no... oh. Nevermind.

We've dipped below the Macias Line?

say what you will about this team, it is handsomely paid...

o.guillen (wsox) suspended 2 days and fined for his on-field + twitter incident.

he's not appealing it (wisely) and starting the suspension immediately.

"I will never get in trouble Twittering," Quade said prior to the opener of a four-game series for the Cubs against D-backs at Chase Field.

When told that the term was "tweeting," Quade added: "See? I can't even say it. I will not get in trouble because I will never do it. I don't have the time, energy or the know-how."

I don't think managers can appeal.

twitter surfing...

1- wtf was paul sulivan doing up at 3-4am watching the royal wedding and actually sharing with the world he was doing so?

2- "Cubs create bleachers promo for Mon, Tue & Wed home games at Wrigley that includes t-shirts, $3 beer & hot dogs" $3 beers? the bleachers about to get a lot more interesting...and younger on whole...

1- gay

2- Monday free T shirt
Tuesday $3 Budweiser
Wednesday $1 Vienna Hotdog

i know the pen just had a day off on wednesday, but im a bit surprised there wasn't a fresh arm brought up tonight.

Dempster is probably available out of the pen if needed. :)

  • Which direction is wind blowing today? With Lackey a groundball pitcher, it might help Cubs if it is blowing in today and a 2-1 game instead of a 10-6 game.

  • I have convinced myself that Hammel's second half struggles were due to minor injuries and fatigue so with the extra rest he is going to be lights out.

  • Benji Molina is out of lineup

  • Yes. Unfortunately, as many of us, I have seen this movie before. Do not care for Hammel, and unlike other managers Joe will pull the plug quickly at least. I hope before things were to get out of hand.

Many of us are like "abused spouses" or whatever - with this Cubs stuff. You get hurt so many times, the trust rapidly erodes.

If the Cubs can get to Lackey early, its gonna be a big key to a W or L.

  • No idea what will happen. The Cards are the Cards and they have come back from 2-1 holes twice in the last 4 years, so I don't see them in panic mode at all. If anything, I expect the Cubs to be pressing more than the Cards today.

I want the Cubs to win because it would be great for the city, and great for the fans. But more than anything, I want the Cubs to win so I can see this team play for at least one more week this year. Never enjoyed watching a team more than this year.

  • Just to remember how far we have come: last year's opening day lineup was Bonifacio, Lake, Castro, Rizzo, Olt, Castillo, Schierholz, Barney, and Samardzija. It's been a fun ride this year!

  • BRADSBEARD: I haven't noticed any new rule or a change in the interpretation of an existing rule happening in Advanced Instructs, I don't know what rules will be tested in the AFL, although almost all recent rule changes and new interpretations of existing rules (the home plate collision rule, replay, time clock between innings, et al) do get their start in the AFL.

  • Yep

  • AZ Phil: I've heard that the AFL will be testing out a new force out rule that would affect break-up plays (like the Utley play). Have you heard anything about this new rule and any details about it? Are they testing it out at the advanced instructs as well?

  • Pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but since I will be in NYC next week I want to confirm... If the Cubs were to advance to the NLCS, the winner of LAD/NYM would have home field based on being a division winner (as opposed to Cubs by virtue of better record), correct?

  • CUBSTER: This "hammy" is on the other leg I heard last night. See you at the ballyard today young man!

  • Lulz

  • Oh what do you know, Cubster? Go back to your day job.

--- Ducks, puts on Cardinals cap, runs.

  • Russell had a severe hamstring last year while with the A's system, forcing him to miss the first half of 2014. I've even wondered if his injury last year was a component of Billy Beane putting him on the trade market. He was quoted saying that last year's injury was a 10 out of 10 when it happened. Last night he said his hamstring soreness was a 1/1.5 out of 10. Hamstring injuries are tricky though, so I'd expect the medical team to be overly cautious here.

  • ...I want to reinforce the observation that there was no sea of red in the crowd. The usual Cardinal fans roaming the stadium were few and far between.

Also, almost every 2 strike pitch brought the fans to their feet. Good for those in knee rehab.

  • "1st team hit hit 6HR in a game in the postseason." rises above obvious...i checked it with the official fact-finding commission of Douche, Douche, and Douchestein. they agreed with you, but they're a bunch of f'n douches so who cares?

btw, the cubs are 2-1 in the post-season series.
