Cubs Use Their Cabezas to Beat Kazmir
Yaniel Cabezas singled twice, doubled, scored two runs, and threw out two opposing base-stealers, and four Cubs pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter, as a split squad of EXST Cubs edged the EXST Angels 2-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action at Fitch Park Field #2 in Mesa this morning.
The game was extended an extra inning to allow Cubs and Angels pitchers to get their scheduled work.
Cubs pitchers Austin Reed and Luis Liria combined to throw six no-run, no hit innings to get things started, retiring 18 of the first 19 men they faced. When Reed is good (that is, when he throws strikes), he is VERY good, and Liria should probably be at Peoria.
It seems to help the younger pitchers when experienced catchers like Chad Noble (played four years of Big Ten baseball at Northwestern) and Yaniel Cabezas (catcher for Cuban Junior National Team) are behind the plate.
Meanwhile, the Cubs were facing MLB LHP Scott Kazmir (15-day DL – back) for the second time in a week, in what was probably his final Extended Spring Training rehab outing. Kazmir threw 5.1 IP (75 pitches), allowing one run (earned) on three hits, a walk, and two HBP, with two strikeouts and a 7/6 GO/FO.
The Cubs scored their only run off Kazmir in the bottom of the second. Yaniel Cabezas led-off with a single, Jose Valdez was hit by a pitch, and Dustin Harrington singled sharply to CF to load the bases with no outs. Pin-Chieh Chen then grounded into a 4-6 FC that scored Cabezas from 3rd.
The Cubs scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the 6th (after Kazmir had left the game). Cabezas doubled to RF with one out, moved-up to 3rd base on a ground out, and scored on a Dustin Harrington RBI single.
While one squad of EXST Cubs played the Angels at Fitch Park, the other squad traveled to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort to play the EXST Rockies. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide a report on the EXST Cubs road game, since the two games were played simultaneously ten miles apart. (To get enough innings for all of the pitchers at Extended Spring Training, the Cubs are scheduling EXST split squad road game/home game dates several times this Spring).
Here is today’s abridged box score for the game at Fitch Park (Cubs players only):

MIKE W: I don't think Wellemeyer is stretched-out enough yet to be a starter, although he could probably work out of the bullpen today (the Cubs being in town and all) if the Cubs wanted him to do that.

========================================
MIKEV W: Doug Davis will probably be making his final EXST start on Saturday and will try and throw five innings or 75 pitches (whichever comes first). Then I would expect him to go to Iowa for two or three starts to see how his stuff plays in the PCL.
Just remember that Davis really sucked with Milwaukee last year, although he wasn't 100% physically, either.

i know the guy gets results, but he has a busy upper body pitching motion to match, imo.
deception is one thing, but he's got a lot of motion up top delivering the ball...long behind his back and flings it. the ball "explodes" out of his arm, but how long will his body let him do it? he also pitches almost exclusively from the far right side of the pitching rubber, too. weird guy, imo.

The Cubs have yet to make a decision on the fifth starter. Casey Coleman is available in the bullpen tonight but is tentatively scheduled to pitch Sunday, so Quade said he's hesitant to use him. There's also a chance Coleman could start Monday in Los Angeles, in which case the Cubs would have to call up a minor leaguer for Sunday or go with another reliever that isn't stretched out yet.
Jeff Samardzija is not an option, Quade said, though Justin Berg and Marcos Mateo are longshots. Triple-A Iowa pitcher Jay Jackson would be on his normal five-day schedule if he was called up to pitch Sunday.
since I'm going to the game Monday, I place my vote for Jay Jackson's first major league start.

Re: Cubs Use Their Cabezas to Beat Kazmir

Huh? How was it Quade's fault that Dempster sucked?
Re: Cubs Use Their Cabezas to Beat Kazmir
on Thu, 04/28/2011 - 9:58pm Permalink
Where the fuck was Quade in the first inning? Having tea? He waits until, oh, I don't know, after the game is over to make a pitching move.
Back in the old days, when managers actually watched the games they were managing, when a starter loads the bases with zero outs, and then gives up a grand slam, the bullpen gets to work. And when the starter then walks two more, he yanks the motherfucker. Instead, Quade watches while Dempster walks another guy, then watches while he gives up another hit, then watches while he gives up another hit, gives up another 3 runs after the grand slam, and takes him out with 2 more guys on base.
We've seen this every start Dempster has made. Quade leaves him out there too long. And we've seen it with other pitchers. How about having Jeff Stevens throw 90 pitches in relief?
Quade doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.

Quade is completely overmatched by the requirements to be a big league manager. It's a shame, I like him, but he sucks. He's not prepared, has no plan, very slow to react to what's actually happening in the game, and he's just not a big league manager. Ricketts needs to fire him if Hendry won't, and fire Hendry while he's at it. This team is a laughingstock.
Re: Cubs Use Their Cabezas to Beat Kazmir
on Thu, 04/28/2011 - 9:42pm Permalink
Dude, I don't know about "totally overmatched".
His and Hendry's most reliable pitcher, and someone who has generally been pretty solid over the last several years, suddenly forgot to pitch in every start in 2011.
The "strength" of the team, starting pitching supposedly, is now not.
