Golden Jack and a Dong Dinger Today's Breakfast Specials at Fitch Park

Reggie Golden blasted a 400-ft+ three-run home run over the left-centerfield fence and Dong-Yub Kim cracked at two-run shot over the LF fence to lead the EXST Cubs to a 9-3 victory over the EXST Diamondbacks this morning at Fitch Park Field #2 in Mesa.

While the Cubs were playing the D’backs on Field #2 (Field #3 was not available), another squad of Cubs played a six-inning intrasquad “sim game” on Field #1, with pitchers Ryan Hartman, Alvido Jimenez, Starling Peralta, Yilver Sanchez, Amaury Paulino, and Joe Zeller throwing two innings a piece.

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHP Justin Bristow (2010 non-TJS elbow surgery) and RHP Su-Min Jung have completed their rehab assignments at Extended Spring Training and have been moved-up to Peoria. Bristow has looked better with each outing, and looks to be about back to where he was in 2009. Bristow throws a 93 MPH fastball, a change, and a curve, and he should be able to pitch multiple innings for the Chiefs. Jung has been stretched-out as a starter at EXST, so he should be able to start or "piggyback" (as needed).

Here is today’s abridged box score for the EXST game at Fitch Park Field #2 (Cubs players only):

How many reserves are starting for LA?

Per Rotoworld from a tweet...

Doug Davis is expected to start Thursday for High-A Daytona.
Assuming all goes well Thursday, he'll move up to Triple-A Iowa. Davis, 35, was signed to a minor league contract last month. The veteran left-hander would be a perfectly respectable insurance policy should either Andrew Cashner or Randy Wells suffer a setback.

A little too late to be thinking about a Cashner/Wells insurance policy...

before he even got injured cashner needed an insurance policy...well, i guess that was coleman or something.

also, wow byrd. glovework...woo.

Was that yesterday or two days ago that Quade was ejected?

garden claw gold...it makes a great gift.

Ha Ha Ha !
Hilarious headline, AZ. Made my day.

If there was a hall of fame for baseball headlines, you would be in on a unanimous first ballot.

probably not indicative of anything, but Pena hit 3 balls that I thought were HR's off the bat, but night air in California has always been death to fly balls.

Hopefully he's about to get on a hot streak...

other than that, defense still sucks as does James Russell

Got to give the guy credit for trying to hit a HR the third time, when the first two illustrated it couldn't be done.

What a mess of a team.

TRN: But, what about how fast Byrd runs down the 1B line on his tappers to the pitcher?

I didn't get the MLB package this year and with each passing day the decision becomes better and better.

I've never seen Dodger Stadium that empty. Wow.

There was a Lakers game last night. Or local Cubs fans were scared to get their skulls cracked in the parking lot.

it was pretty damn empty, Lakers probably had a small effect as did James Russell and the star-less Cubs.

it was also the first day back from Spring break for a lot of people.

I expect a few more tonight, but not a big difference.

Ozzie Guillen "Mark Buerhle is a Hall Of Famer

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/sports/c...

I didn't realize he played another sport. Which is it? Wasn't Jeff Conine a world class handball player?

It's May 3rd and Jae-Hoon Ha has seven outfield assists.

Wow. That's impressive.

It occurred to me, that in three years the Cubs could have had a top three in the lineup that featured Hak-Ju Lee (currently .486 OBP in the FSL to go with his .623 slugging), Matt Szczur (0-3 last night to drop to .306 average but walked twice and stole three baess) and Starlin Castro...oh, yeah, they would also be playing up the middle defense.

It could have been something similar to the ET McGhee, Ozzie Smith, Tommy Herr trio that tormented the NL East back in the 80's.

Willie McGee did have the longest neck on record.

I am glad that I am not the only one who marked the similarity.

Junior Lake has been hitting leadoff and has 8 SBs. Never (literally) draws a walk so he's one of those guys with an OBP below his BA.

Ah, that explains why he's 0/8 in May.

Darwin named NL Rookie of the Month

im amazed he's only GIDP twice. he's not slow...but he's not "baseball fast."

don't say the g word

He has evolved into the best rookie.

ryan dempster shaved his beard-thing into a fu-man-chooooooooo.

IT TURNS AROUND TONIGHT, YO.

8 appearances in a row, 13 innings...no ER for ninja (and only 4 hits).

...now if he could walk less people there might be a decent middle reliever in there somewhere (9bb in that same period, btw). some days he's sharp...most days he's wobbly at best even if they aren't hitting him.

lulz...p.sulivan's twitter from last night...

Leaving Dodger Stadium. If I get killed in the parking lot, just want to say thanks for following me on Twitter, and have a good life.

RF Fukudome, 2B Barney, SS Castro, 3B Ramirez, CF Byrd, 1B Pena, LF Soriano, C Soto, P Dempster

Billingsley for Dodgers

we're back to that with soriano and soto, eh? neat.

"uhh, if we had the major league leader in home runs...I would bat the major league HR leader...uhhh...SEVENTH!"

Hendry: " YESSSSSS! That's the only interview question Ryne Sandberg missed... MR.CUBS MANAGER!

Looks like he found lou's printed line up cards.

With a 5th starter not needed until a week from Saturday, Casey Coleman or James Russell should have been optioned to Iowa today, and Jeff Stevens or Scott Maine should have been recalled (Stevens has been on Optional Assignment for ten days, so he is eligible to be recalled beginning today).

Or both Coleman AND Russell could be sent down if the Cubs want to try their luck with another starter on Saturday (like maybe Jay Jackson, for example).

  • Lackey finishes with a 3.35 ERA. Currently good for 13th in the NL. Not bad for a guy signed to be a #3 starter in a 15-team league.

He is also 6th in WHIP. Pretty amazing: Cubs have the #2, #3, #5 and #6 starters in WHIP.

  • Completely meaningless game, but Pena striking out Sean the Turd to with the bases loaded was very fun.

Other than one bad game in SD, Pena has been very good. Even with that game, 9.0 IP, 13 K, 0.89 WHIP.

  • Just looked up Grimm's stats -- after a great run, he gave up 2 runs vs. MIL then didn't pitch for 10 days. Don't remember why?

  • Grimm not doing himself any favors lately re: making the playoff squad. Seems to have lost the feel for his curveball.

  • rare air though if he can keep it under 2. Sounds like Maddon already made up his mind though and Hendricks seems like the sort that would want to earn it. Guessing he gets a quick hook if he's still under 2 after 5 innings.

Fwiw, he can give up 1 ER in 5 innings (or more) and still be under 2. If he gives up 2 ER, he would need throw 9 IP to keep it under 2. 1 ER in 4 IP would give him an ERA of exactly 2.

In terms of WAR, it's still Scherzer by a lot (6.4), then Cueto (5.6), Lester (5.5), Kershaw (5.5), Roark (5.4), and then Hendricks (5.1)

  • Boring lineup tonight in terms of guys trying to reach milestones -- no KB (40 HR), Addy (100 RBI) or JHey (can he keep it going?), and Lackey isn't really going for anything, plus the team has already reached 100 wins. I get the "rest" thing, although they will have 4 days off after Sunday, but....bleh.
