Geiger Counters Giant Rally with Walk-Off H-Bomb

After watching the EXST Giants score four runs in the top of the 7th inning (last inning) to take an 8-7 lead, Dustin Geiger slugged a two-out three-run game-winning walk-off HR in the bottom of the 7th to give the EXST Cubs a 10-8 victory over the Giants on Field #3 and a split in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader played this morning at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

The Giants edged the Cubs 2-1 in the game that was played on Field #2. Both games were seven-inning affairs.

The 19-year old 6’3 200+ Geiger was the Cubs 2010 24th round draft pick out of Merritt Island HS (Brevard County, FL), receiving an “overslot” bonus ($150K) to give up a chance to play college ball at nearby U. of Central Florida. He has struggled at the plate for much of his short Cub minor league career, but the big RH hitter had a really big day at the plate today, reaching base all four times he batted (two singles, a walk, and the game-winning HR), while driving-in four runs.

Also on Field #3, 19-year old Kyung-Min Na had three hits (two singles and a double) and two stolen bases, scored two runs, and knocked-in two more, while making a couple of nice running catches in the outfield. Na received a reported $725K bonus when he signed with the Cubs in 2009, and at the time was rated by all the scouts who saw him play as the “fastest HS player in South Korea.”

Q-MAN: He probably has lost a few pounds since he reported to Minor League Camp, but he needs to lose more. He has below-average speed right now.

Ready for a laugh? The Bleacher Report suggests the Cubs should trade for Carlos Beltran...which isn't likely going to happen because of his salary and the Cubs probably won't be close to the division lead come June/July, but the real kicker is what the guy says the Cubs should trade for 2-3 months of Beltran...

"...what will it take to get him?

The Mets will likely be looking for little more than salary relief and a couple of "B" or even "C" level prospects. Think Josh Vitters, Reggie Golden and Marquez Smith — players in that mold.

But even if the Cubs have to throw in a Trey McNutt, perhaps they do it because after all, you only get so many chances to be "all in," right?"

The Bleacher Report is something awful...

I've never read it before, but it came up in a Google search. That's just a really bad article over there. And in the comments the guy says something like, "I know they won't make the trade, but I'm bored."

He must be a Met fan.

But that June schedule will kick the Cubs straight in the balls and out of contention.

BR is a blog aggregator. It has 4000 bad amateur writers. And all of their crap floats to the top of Google searches.

Thanks Google.

My guess is he read this fangraphs article on the worth of Beltran (cash and C prospects) and doesn't know what equals C prospects nor the burden of a crappy contract.

Stow is still in a coma. 200 Billboards offering a $100,000 reward going up all over LA.

Saturday night lights

Tonight’s game will be the first on a Saturday night at Wrigley Field since Aug. 31, 2002. That was a rescheduled game that became the second of a doubleheader.

The last regularly scheduled Saturday night game at Wrigley was June 20, 1998.

It's freezing here.

Which might cut down on the drunk knuckeheads.

The most striking thing about the photo of the Pujols hug is Hendry and Pujols appear to be roughly the same size. It's fair to say they are not built the same, however.

Although Thomas Diamond's slot on the 40-man roster is not needed right now or probably anytime soon (the Cubs already had a slot available for Doug Davis), the Cubs have outrighted him to Iowa anyway.

Because he has been outrighted previously in his career, Diamond has the right to refuse the outright assignment and be a free-agent immediately, or he can wait to exercise his right to be a FA until the end of the MLB regular season.

With the rumblings of sending Colvin down to get him some regular at bats, maybe they needed a spot on the 40-man for another OF? (Since Fernando Perez isn't showing anything.)

Justin Berg to Iowa for Dud Davis.
Diamond indeed off the 40 man roster for DD.

Muskat twits a lineup...

CarrieMuskat: #cubs lineup sat nite rf fuke, 2b barney, ss castro, 1b pena, cf byrd, lf soriano, 3b dewitt, c hill, p davis

WOW! It is 6 weeks into the season and we see the 1st sighting of DeWitt at 3B - his best position.

DFA is Hill's best position... hopefully that will come soon as well.

So ARam didn't make it back for tonight's game.

===============================

CUBSTER: Contrary to what was reported by Carrie, Thomas Diamond was NOT outrighted to make room on the 40-man roster for Doug Davis. There already was one slot open, and even if the 40-man roster had been full, Brian Schlitter could have been transferred to the 60-day DL (he has already spent 53 days on the 15-day DL, and is nowhere close to returning to action).

I would say a more likely reason for the Cubs outrighting Diamond now was that if he got claimed off waivers, the Cubs would save some of the $100K they are paying him on his minor league split (he gets more than the minor league split minimum because he spent 1/3 of the 2010 season on the Cubs MLB Active List). If the Cubs release Diamond (which will probably come next), they have to eat his entire minor league split salary, unless he signs a major league contract with another MLB club (which would be VERY unlikely given that nobody claimed him off outright waivers).

  • Boras is 63, maybe he'll be retired or dead by the time Bryant, Russell, Almora, Albertos all hit free agency. Doubt he will be before Jake hits there though.

  • Interesting choices when guys get healthy.

LaStella, Fowler & Soler replace Coghlan, Almora and Sczcur? I assume they don't want Almora to sit.

Despite MIggy's demise, I assume they keep him around to mentor Contreras?

  • I believe Willson now has more CS than MIggy. The kid has an arm. Also, Russell is amazingly good on those plays at 2nd.

  • Although it felt like it, Jake didn't lose to them -- he got the W. (Assuming you are referring to Monday's game)

  • Arrieta didn't lose to the Reds. He got the win -- he just didn't pitch like we expect him to.

  • it's not like this CIN team is lost-cause horrible, but aside from defense and power this is a truly horrible team.

kinda crazy arrieta lost to them and yesterday's game had to go 15 innings for the cubs win.

  • It looked like Hamilton got screened by Duvall and that Duvall just barely deflected the ball off of his glove--redirecting it slightly without taking away much of its momentum.

At least it didn't turn into a Schwarber/Fowler situation. Hamilton and Duvall are both pretty important youngish players for the Reds.

  • he walked off the field on his own. aside from a concussion watch and some attention to his leg/knee that buckled a bit under him, the biggest thing hurt was probably his pride after the ball knocked off his skull.

  • After last night, an inside-the-park HR seems kind of run-of-the-mill somehow.

Sounds bad for Hamilton. Hope he's okay--listening on the radio.

  • SHOW ME THE MONEY: Jose Albertos has signed with Mega-Agent Scott Boras.

Albertos has already received his signing bonus and won't see any additional significant money until he reaches the big leagues, so this is a long-term investment for the Boras Corporation.

Other Cubs represented by Boras include Jake Arrieta, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and Albert Almora Jr.

  • Baez had Maddon's ass last night. I didn't hear the reason for taking Contreras out last night but whatever game management thingy it was, you don't take out your second hottest hitter. Or is he third? Anyway, you don't take him out. The guy can probably play anywhere in the field, anyway. Did anybody see that nice catch in left he made? I don't think he got a late start on that, just tracked it damn well for a catcher.
