Pitching & Timely Hitting Key to Cub Success at Salt River Fields
Dong-Yub Kim and Brandon May smacked back-to-back two out RBI doubles to key a two-run 1st inning that propelled one squad of EXST Cubs to a 5-2 victory over one squad of EXST Rockies on Red Mountain Field, while Yao-Lin Wang, Jin-Young Kim, and Starling Peralta combined to throw a three-hit shutout as the other squad of Cubs blanked the other squad of Rockies 3-0 on Dust Storm Field, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader action at Salt River Fields at the Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale this morning.
The games were played simultaneously, and both games were seven-inning affairs.
Tennessee OF Ty Wright (sprained ankle) and Iowa SS Augie Ojeda (back) continued their injury rehab assignments in today’s game on Red Mountain Field, with Wright playing LF for six innings and going 1-2 with a single, a HBP, a stolen base, and two runs scored, and Ojeda playing SS for five innings and going 0-3 (4-3, K, 4-3).
Only one pair of umpires showed up, so the game on Red Mountain Field was umpired by Rockies and Cubs coaches.
Here are the abridged box scores from today’s games (Cubs players only)

And it keeps getting better...
Garza to miss Sunday's start with elbow tightness and will see a Dr. in Chicago. Russell or Shark-Face could start.

"Sunday's plans are up in the air, though Quade said it will likely be a bullpen day, and James Russell is the "prohibitive favorite" to start, after pitching three scoreless innings against Boston on Friday."
So they plan on bringing a guy back on one day's rest and hope he gives them 3 ip or more? The management of this team is ridiculous. Don't we have anyone in the minors that is scheduled to start Sunday to bring up for one game?

Randy Wells is scheduled to start Sunday for Iowa. I don't know who's scheduled for Tennessee. They have said Wells would make 1 start at Iowa and then return for next weekend, wouldn't be better to send down Maine and bring Wells up for this start? Or send down Main (or someone else) and bring up someone else to plug in?

The Cubs 'brainiacs' on the field and at Clark & Addison are making this a very tough team to root for (or want to spend money watching).

Quade said he thought about calling up Wells for tomorrow's start but said 'he's not ready'. I understand not rushing a guy back from an injury, but if he's considered healthy enough to pitch 5 innings for Iowa I don't really see why he's not healthy enough to pitch 5 innings up here.
But still, there's NOBODY else available?

PAUL N: For some reason Tennessee LHP Chris Rusin was scratched from his scheduled start tonight, and RHP Rob Whitenack is scheduled to make his next start for Tennessee tomorrow, so I guess either of them could be possibilities to make Matt Garza's start tomorrow.
BTW, if Whitenack is brought up to pitch at Fenway tomorrow and then gets optioned back to the minors (even if he is brought up to make just the one start), he would get a 4th minor league option year, as long as it is used prior to 2015.

If he fractured his eye socket his career could be over. A lot of guys were done after that. Dickie Thon (did return later but never had full vision), Steve Kemp...

announcers are way too busy filling the broadcast with 90%+ redsox talk to discuss m.byrd or talk about/around the situation.
this broadcast is an embarrassment. they seem to only know or have direction to talk about 1 team.
almost all the cubs talk is about carlos pena, too. go figure.

Nice minor-league streak for Cubs: twelve wins in three days.
A few interesting numbers--
Peoria: Eric Jokisch has been finishing games for Hayden Simpson all season. Simpson doesn't ever quite get to five innings, so he's 0-1, while Jokisch is 6-0.
Daytona: Junior Lake has 16 stolen bases.
Tennessee: Matt Spencer has ten home runs. Flaherty has 43 RBI.

Byrd being kept in hospital overnight, Cubs said they can't say if has a fracture or vision problems until more tests are run on Sunday. I would take that as he has some swelling and probably some vision problems now, but they can't determine yet to the extent until the swelling starts to go down. I doubt they wouldn't be able to say anything if he were just sore.
