Brett Jackson Back in the Saddle at Fitch Ranch

The EXST Cubs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the EXST Diamondbacks 6-6, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs did have a chance to win the game, but Reggie Golden popped out to the first-baseman to end the bottom of the 9th, leaving the potential winning run stranded at 3rd base.

Tennessee OF (and Cubs 2009 1st round draft pick and #1 position player prospect) Brett Jackson saw his first game action since going on the Smokies DL with a finger injury on May 12th, getting four plate appearances as a DH, one in each of the first four innings.

B-Jax ripped a line-drive single to RF in his first AB in the bottom of the 1st inning, grounded out 4-3 in the bottom of the 2nd, struck out swinging in the bottom of the 3rd, and hammered a triple off the right-centerfield fence (near HR) in the bottom of the 4th (and eventually scored on a Pin-Chieh Chen GO). Based on how he swung the bat today (very well), I doubt that he will be down here much longer.

LHP (ex-OF) Kyler Burke got the start for the Cubs and worked two strong innings (19 pitches - 16 strikes) allowing just a lead-off single on his first pitch to the first batter he faced, before retiring the next six in order, including three on strikeouts (two swinging).

Here is today’s abridged box score (Cubs players only)

WEATHER: Sunny with temperatures in the 90’s

according to quade, r.lopez has role yet, though.

Bruce Miles' blog has some minor league talk with Oneri Fleita.

Ha staying in AA when Jackson returns which should be Monday

Soto may need an extra day due to a rainout Thursday

nice things to say about Bour and says McNutt should be over blister problems and ready to pitch deeper in games.

on Simpson

“I took the guns out of the ballpark,” he answered. "I can care less. For him, I took them out. For him and a couple of other guys, I’ve taken the guns out, because I don’t care. I want to know you’re throwing strikes, you’re getting guys out and you’re creating groundballs when you pitch. After that, I haven’t seen a gun get anybody out.”

Oneri says he does that for a “select group of pitchers” who might be overly concerned with their velocity.

Rodrigo Lopez to start Monday.!/CarrieMuskat/status/742...

Casey Coleman to Iowa to make room for Randy Wells.

another sam fuld/TB promotion on sunday...super sam fuld cape giveaway.

he's another month or so from having TB retire his jersey. by season's end he should be in the team HOF. 2012 plans involve submitting him as a wonder of the world candidate.

How many .230 career hitters get one promo day, never mind several in one season?

Soto 0/3 in first rehab game, not playing in second game of DH'er.

Whitenack going in 2nd game, trying to keep perfect record going. 2-0 Tennessee in the first...Vitters and Ridling with RBI singles.

animated gif of David Price nearly hit in head with broken bat

he almost took a comeback baseball to the head a little earlier in the game, too. both were freaky close.

Bruce Miles posted this later in the thread:

Oneri Fleita sends word during the game that pitcher Alberto Cabrera will be promoted from Tennessee to Iowa and will pitch Sunday.
...sounds like it's because of them dropping Coello but wouldn't Coleman be a starter at Iowa? At least MW will have a hard thrower to watch.

CUBSTER: Looks like Alberto Cabrera will take Robert Coello's slot in the I-Cubs rotation, and Casey Coleman will replace J. R. Mathes (who was released today).

Maybe Fleita and/or Miles has his wires crossed?

The Des Moines Register says Mathes was released to make room for Marco Carrillo,

The winningest pitcher in Iowa Cubs history is a former Iowa Cub.

J.R. Mathes was released Friday to make room for Marco Carrillo’s promotion from double-A Tennessee.

Mathes, 29, had a 2-4 record and 9.07 earned-run average in nine starts this season. He has 42 career wins, a franchise record.

Carrillo, 24, was 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA for the Smokies.

Also from CCO...

The Cubs announced Friday that Alberto Cabrera will be promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa. Cabrera is on the Cubs' 40-man roster. Marco Carrillo also received a promotion Friday. The right-hander has been added to the I-Cubs roster after a solid start to the season with the Smokies.
They are both right? Looks like the I-Cubs starting staff is getting an 'Oprah' makeover with three new starters, no?

Anyword on why Whitenack only pitched 2.2 innings with no runs allowed?

"TheCCO ChicagoCubsOnline
#Cubs Robert Whitenack left the game against Miss. Braves w/ 2 outs in 3rd. Whitenack delivered a pitch then bent over, called for coahes."

via twitter

Great, even our pitching prospects are getting hurt this year. Miserable year so far.

Bruce Miles, in the comments of his his blog, had a little information.

"Rob Whitenack. He left last night's start after only 2.2 innings with what the Cubs described as arm discomfort."

archer still can't get it together in AA...another bad night

4ip 5h 5bb 5k 2er

he's going to work himself into the pen if he can't get to 5+ip more often than he's showing.

Even our castoffs are getting hurt. Or once a Cub, always a Cub...From Rotoworld:

Nationals placed LHP Tom Gorzelanny on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24, with left elbow inflammation.

With Coello dfa'd, here's Tony Thomas line for Pawtucket:

2011 24 Pawtucket IL AAA BOS 40 162 141 .213 .296 .390 .686

Universal Entropy, nothing accomplished...and then there was the cold vacuum of empty space.

That's both funny AND poetic!

Makes me yearn for Haiku Wednesdays (or whatever day it used to be).

lineup sat: cf campana, 2b barney, ss castro, 3b ramy, lf soriano, rf montanez, 1b pena, c hill, p wells
a real leadoff hitter! and only 4 crappy veterans.

Lopez will start Monday vs. Houston and Garza will throw before Sunday's game to see if he's ready to go back into the rotation.

Ronny Cedeno goes deep? Okay I'm done for today. Wow, it's not even June yet. Is it too late to get a new owner?

Tony Campana's mitt is almost as big as he is.

im sick and that involves a lot of laying around the house, but i still don't know why i keep subjecting myself to this team.

there wasn't even a shred of "good" to today's game unless you want to celebrate a few hits or the miracle of 9 innings in the field without an error.

oh yeah, k.hill caught a guy stealing. that's 2 for 12 or something like that.

It was a pathetic all-around team effort.

can quade/cubs/etc quit pretending d.barney is the future and play jeff baker a bit?

Baker's been injured, which is why he hasn't been playing much the last few games. And there's plenty of guys I'd rather see Baker play over than Barney.

gotcha, thnx.

Boy, thanks for that link. I remember watching both games and being pissed.

  • Had a lot of hope hanging on that deep Fowler fly in the sixth.

    Really despise the Cards

  • aside from one swing, this 1-0 game feels like a blow out. Still nice to know one swing can change everything.

We need Rizzo and Bryant to show up.

  • schwarb leadoff bunt single...lulz.

  • thanks. it was odd. supposedly the dodgers had him signed earlier in the year, then a lot of nothing, then the giants thing a few days ago, then the cubs get him for a bargain. i'll take it.

  • Umps strikezone is awful. Giving Lackey a good 6 inches off the plate.

  • Apparently it was greedy agents who kept pushing the envelope and teams backed away. He then fired his agents and by that time the landscape had changed. The July push had passed and teams were willing to be patient.

As far as what happened to the Giants' deal, I don't know. But perhaps he looked at the two rosters and realized the Cubs had the better chance of winning going forward. Maybe the Cubs swooped in and gave him $500,000 more and he bit. I don't know. What I do know is he signed the day after the Cubs won the wildcard game rather impressively...

  • That's great to hear AZ Phil. If anyone should know, it'd be you. You've witnessed the transformation first-hand on a daily basis!! Thanks for passing that along and confirming what has seemed quite evident from afar!

  • Lester didn't have much movement there in inning one. Doubt the long break between starts helped him. Rizzo popping out way too often the last 6 weeks. 22 pitches for Lackey through 2.

    Tough start.

  • For Quintin to be in the team (should they get past the Cards) maybe a pitcher gets the axe.

  • if the cubs make it past STL (and molina behind the plate) it'll be interesting to see if they find a home for q.berry on the roster as a running substitution tool.

  • RHP Jason Hammel replaces OF Quintin Berry on the Active Roster, as the Cubs go from 10 pitchers in the Wild Card game to 11 pitchers in the NLDS.

  • the story checks out.

    also, i agree.

  • So all this business about Maddon being an old Cards fan and Arrieta being in Matt Carpenter's wedding... I have really strong feelings about this stuff. I'm not sure if I really enjoy it or really despise it, but I feel strongly about it...

  • Joe.

  • Today's Loss puts new meaning into their national anthem: O Canada

  • LaTroy does what he's always done best, blow games on the line. Still breaking management hearts at age 42.
