Angels Pummel Cubs as Brett Jackson Completes Rehab

J. C. Rodriguez knocked-in six runs with an RBI single, a two-run double, and a three-run home run, leading the EXST Angels to a 10-2 thrashing of the EXST Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ.

The game was extended an extra couple of innings so that all of the pitchers who were due to throw today could get their scheduled work.

OF Brett Jackson (on Tennessee Smokies DL with finger injury) completed his rehab assignment today in Tempe, playing six innings in CF and going 1-4.at the plate. The Cubs #1 position player prospect hit everything to the opposite field today, roping a line-drive RBI single over the shortstop’s head in his first AB, flying out to LF his next time up, getting called out on strikes (frozen by a slow curve) in his 3rd plate appearance, and grounding out to the shortstop in his final AB.

Over his two rehab games (eight PA) at EXST, Jackson hit 375/375/625 (1B, 4-3, K, 3B, 1B, F-7, K, 6-3). He will be rejoining the Tennessee Smokies on Monday.

irod...with less than 170 hits from 3000 hits...has let Nats management know he doesn't want to be traded since the SF-needing-catcher rumors have swirled his name. odd. he'd see so many more ABs with someone who doesn't have a hotshot prospect C stealing starts from him. he already knows he's HOF bound, i guess...or he's too tired to start everyday...who knows.

per Rotoworld (with the Astros coming to town on Memorial Day): Wandy Rodriguez was scratched from his scheduled Saturday start on Friday, and will be replaced in the rotation by top Astros prospect Jordan Lyles, who will make his first career start on Tuesday at Wrigley Field. --- Cubs vs pitcher they've never seen: I see "L" flags

and a blast from the past (again, per Rotoworld)... Rich Harden (shoulder) had a successful 15-pitch bullpen session Saturday. The next step is to throw to hitters, but that hasn't been scheduled yet. --- 15 pitches gets him "deep" into the first inning, about the second hitter in the lineup

Reed Johnson to the DL with a weak back (ta da boom). muskat tweets a Brad Snyder sighting at Wrigley. Soto activated, koyie hill status remains useless but now less visible and w castillo gets to play with Iowa.

Game update: Cubs say it will not start on time, no time given, but they hope to get the game in. Storm is moving due East towards Wrigley, and I'm 30 miles from Chicago and it's not raining here, just looks like the aftermath of Armageddon. Maybe they'll get a window or two to play most of the game in.

now that the Mariners are in 2nd and back to .500, they might have some use for Fukudome and the Silva money back for a prospect. Campana's speed is a nice addition, sure makes more sense to lead him off though. Snyder (and probably Colvin shortly) can hold down RF and I'd surely be less depressed about watching someone who will be gone next year. 2-2, thanks to Campana's speed.

If the Cubs do in fact bring up D. J. LeMahieu and then option him back to the minors once Jeff Baker returns from the DL, LeMahieu would get a 4th minor league option year, as long as it is used prior to 2015. LeMahieu probably is the eventual heir to the Jeff Baker Roster Slot, just as Ryan Flaherty will very likely eventually fill the Blake DeWitt Roster Slot, and Steve Clevenger will take-over the Koyie Hill Roster Slot. A Flaherty/LeMahieu platoon at 3B in 2012 is a possibility, since I doubt that the Cubs will go outside the organization to replace Aramis Ramirez, especially if they put all of their available cash into the Prince Fielder Free-Agent Fund. Even if Josh Vitters does develop into an MLB everyday 3B, I doubt that he will be ready anytime before 2013.

Cubs pitching prospect Rob Whitenack has a strained elbow, according to a couple of Cubs people. That never sounds good, but the Cubs said they had no plans to bring Whitenack to Chicago to get looked at. That might be a good sign because they’re generally very cautious on these things. It’s something to keep an eye on, though. Bruce Miles Blog: http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/5779

Wow. All MLB teams are wearing commemorative Memorial Day hats, which are butt ugly. They look like 1970's foam truckers hats. Red and white. Awful. The old ones they wore before with the regular hats with team logo in stars and stripes looked far better.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
