Geiger Blast Nets Cubs Split at Salt River Fields

Dustin Geiger slugged a grand slam HR to cap a five-run 2nd inning as one squad of EXST Cubs drilled one squad of EXST Rockies 10-4 on Red Mountain Field, but the other squad of Rockies pounded out 17 hits (including three triples, two doubles, and a three-run HR) and thumped the other squad of Cubs 12-1 on Dust Storm Field, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training Memorial Day doubleheader played this morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick east of Scottsdale, AZ.

About 10 years back I suddenly had quad problems in both legs while playing softball in a day long tournament. We had no subs left and had gotten pretty deep into the tourney, so I wasn't about to just quit when I could still stand up and look like a guy playing defense. My quads tightened up so bad I couldn't run, it was excruciatingly painful to try and just walk fast and made running the bases and playing defense basically impossible, but I had to play 3 games with it like that. We finally lost and were eliminated, but the moral of the story is, quad injuries can completely suck. I had all your regular sprained ankles and pulled hamstrings, got drilled a lot of times, got clobbered in football, but the quad problems were the worst. They continued to be tight and to this day if I try to run they still tighten up. It put an end to my softball days.

Well i for one think if Q-ball plays the younsters there would be alot more interest in watching ,they suck already. Colvin should get call start in right everyday. Dont we need a backup first baseman anyways.

Dont we need a backup first baseman anyways ===================================== ROKFISH: I think the Cubs want to leave Tyler Colvin at Iowa for an extended period, until he can be more consistent at the plate. So I suspect the Cubs will bring up either Scott Moore or Bobby Scales from Iowa to replace Soriano (Scales more likely than Moore), since both can play multiple positions (including 1B). If the Cubs do call-up Scales or Moore, they will need to open up a spot on the 40-man roster, and I would expect Esmailin Caridad to get Designated for Assignment to make room for Scales or Moore. Also, it looks like Augie Ojeda has (finally) completed his rehab at Extended Spring Training, and should be about ready to get reactivated from the Iowa DL. There is one roster opening in Des Moines right now, or two once the Cubs call-up somebody to replace Soriano, and three if they DFA Caridad. If the Cubs do need another position player at Iowa (besides to Ojeda) to replace Scales or Moore, I would expect either Ryan Flaherty or Matt Spencer to get moved up to Iowa from Tennessee. RHP Robert Coello should clear waivers today, and presuming he is not claimed, he will likely be assigned outright to Iowa and be reactivated, and will probably go back into the I-Cubs starting rotation. So Coello would replace Caridad on the I-Cubs 24-man roster, presuming Caridad gets the next DFA. BTW, the Cubs had to DFA Coello because they needed two business days to secure Outright Waivers on him before he could be outrighted to AAA, and a player who is on an Optional Assignment to the minors must be "Recalled - Not to Report" before he can be Designated for Assignment. And then the player accrues as many days of MLB Service Time as he spends on the Designated List and is paid at the MLB rate, so I doubt that the Cubs wasted any time putting Coello on waivers last Friday, and they won't waste any time outrighting him, either, presuming he is not claimed by another club. (It is taking this long to get Coello through waivers because a player must spend two business days on waivers, and weekends and holidays and not considered MLB business days during the season). Likewise, Jeff Stevens should finish his "waiver ride" at 1 PM EDT on Thursday (as would Caridad if he is DFA'd prior to 2 PM EDT today), and presuming Stevens and/or Caridad are not claimed, the Cubs would have two more roster decisions to make at Iowa involving pitchers. Perhaps RHP Alberto Cabrera (who is over his head at Iowa) will be sent back to Tennessee once all the smoke clears. There is also a question about Ramon Ortiz perhaps having an opt-out in his contract if he is not brought up to Chicago by a certain date. If so, an "opt out" is usually on the first or last day of a month, and so we'll see if Ortiz has the right to demand his release, and if so, if it's today (5/31) or tomorrow (6/1). If he does have that right, the Cubs might decide to bring him up to Chicago. He had a strong outing for the I-Cubs yesterday, and it's hard to imagine he could be much worse than Doug Davis or Rodrigo Lopez.

I would agree why not Snyder also does he not have to clear waivers to be sent down again,why not see what we have. bottom of the ninth tying run on second pitcher up who the hell is he gonna pinch hit for piotcher Zambrano i would rather see experience on bench.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.
