Your 2011 Boise Hawks and Your 2011 AZL Cubs!

Minor League Field Coordinator Dave Bialas and the coaching staff at Fitch Park have completed their final observations and evaluations of the newly-signed draft picks, and so here are the rosters for the Boise Hawks ands AZL Cubs as of 7 AM (MST) this morning:

* bats or throws left
# bats both

NOTE: Boise has a 30-man ACTIVE LIST (of which 25 players including at least 10 pitchers can be designated as ACTIVE prior to each game) and a 35-man RESERVE LIST, and the AZL CUBS have a 35-man combined ACTIVE LIST/RESERVE LIST, of which 25 players including at least ten pitchers can be designated as ACTIVE for each game.

At present Boise has four roster slots open, and the AZL Cubs have two roster slots open. Draft picks must be placed on a minor league roster no later than 15 days after signing, so once the Cubs sign another six draft picks, the Boise and AZL Cubs rosters will be full.

As I mentioned in a comment on a previous thread yesterday, Paul Hoilman (2011 19th round draft pick out of East Tennessee State) hit a 450+ ft HR over the CF Green Monster off Jin Young Kim in a "live" BP session at Field Park Field #2 yesterday morning.

Hoilman was the Home Run Derby champ at the 2010 College World Series, and finished tied for third in HR in NCAA Div-1 this season. I am going to go WAY out on a limb and predict that Hoilman will lead the Northwest League in HR. He is a beast.

And if he flops at baseball he is an Academic All-American majoring in math, and plans to eventually attend either medical school or law school.

As a general rule of thumb (and there are exceptions), HS and JC draft picks are usually assigned to the AZL Cubs, and college draft picks get assigned to Boise (if there is room).

College players who don't sign immediately after the conclusion of the draft usually have to spend some time with the AZL Cubs before moving up to Boise, and then if and when they do move up, guys who were initially assigned to Boise could get released or could get demoted to AZL Cubs or could get promoted to Peoria to make room for the new guys (if the Boise roster is full).

Four college pitchers (P. J. Francescon, Pete Levitt, Casey Lucchese, and Sheldon McDonald) are presently at Fitch Park, and any or all could move up to Boise in short order.

Also, Florida State just got eliminated at a Super Regional, so FSU senior catcher Rafael Lopez (Cubs 16th round draft pick) will probably be assigned to Boise soon after he signs. He is obviously in playing shape.

Other college picks who would likely get to Boise pretty fast if and when they sign would include U. of Miami 2B-CF Zeke DeVoss, U. of Louisville RHRP Tony Zych, U. of Alabama OF Taylor Dugas, U. of Texas LHRP Andrew McKirahan (presently with the Longhorns at the College World Series), Florida State OF Taiwan Easterling, TCU RHSP Steven Maxwell, and Clemson RHRP Scott Weismann. In fact, Zych, Dugas, and Maxwell (who is a 5th year senior) could get jumped to Peoria. But again, that's only if they sign.

Taiwan Easterling is an interesting case. Because he also plays college football, the Cubs can spread his bonus out over five years, but with strings attached (as was the case with Matt Szczur this time last year), with Easterling returning to Florida State for the Fall Semester to play football, before deciding whether to puruse a career in pro baseball or in pro football.

With the Cubs performing as they are it's nice to look forward to next year, or the one after, etc. etc. Thanks for all of the interesting info.

CHUCK: Boise should have a pretty good team.

A starting rotation/piggyback group consisting of Liria-Wang-Wells-Reed-Kim-Cruz-Rosario are all quality arms, ex-OF Kyler Burke and ex-3B Charles Thomas have made tremendous strides in their conversions to pitcher, Pin-Chieh Chen really started to play well at Extended Spring Training once he was moved from 2B to CF and he could be a dynamite lead-off hitter, Yaniel Cabezas was unofficial EXST Cubs MVP (he led the team in RBI and handled himself very well behind the plate), and the quintet of Klafczynski-Hoilman-Fitzgerald-Golden-Contreras should be a powerful force in the middle of the Hawks order (DJ Fitz struggled big time at Peoria, but he should feast on the lesser pitching he'll see at Boise).

Your posts are very informative. It's much better than trying to keep up with things, solely by watching the transaction lists.

AZ Phil, how has Reggie Golden looked lately? Has he continued to lose weight and get into shape?

...or has he STARTED to lose weight and get in shape?

PAUL N: Reggie Golden really struggled the last four weeks of Extended Spring Training.

After hitting a HR in his 1st AB at Talking Stick on May 10th, Golden hit 123/206/123 in his next 63 PA, going 7-57 with 21 K, four BB, and two HBP, and all seven of the hits were singles.

And you could really see the frustration, too. Obviously he had never struggled like that before.

While he could turn out to be a RH version of Michael Burgess, I think he'll probably be OK long-term. He has as much power as anybody in the Cubs organization. He just needs to get himself into better condition next off-season and keep his eyes on the prize.

Levine says Chris Carpenter gonna be called up today.

Replaces DeWitt in LF.

WSCR saying he's not even on the 40-man roster... is this true?

believe so, they just DFA'd Snyder though, so there should be a spot.

Coleman going back down? Davis being released? Mothra attacking Wrigley Field tonight?

Quade building an all-pitcher team. I think this could be trend setting.

Coleman seems the obvious choice...

Wood going to the DL for Baker....Snyder DFA'd.....
So Carpenter takes Wood's spot, baker takes Snyder's.

Coleman was called up when Snyder was sent down...

Casey Coleman was recalled to replace Brad Snyder, Baker was activated when Kerry Wood went on the DL, and Carpenter will replace Coleman (presumably).

The Cubs would have had to add Carpenter to their 40-man roster post-2011 anyway (he's eligible for the Rule 5 Draft next December), so it's just a few months early.

Sullivan tweeted Coleman was indeed sent out for Carpenter.

Wake Up Call for Riggins
Your staff is worse

Looks like they are all wearing them.

The curse of the goat might as well be the curse of the red herring at this point. They're not winning a world series this year, not because of a curse, but because they are bad at the game of baseball.

Maybe I shouldn't take it too seriously... idk.

RT @CarrieMuskat #cubs lineup for tue rf fuke, ss castro, 3b ramy, 1b pena, lf dewitt, c soto, 2b baker, cf TBD, p wells

I hear TBD has trouble with the breaking ball.

allegedly Reed might show up in time for the game.

He's already there, needs to be cleared by MLB or something.

I misinterpreted a tweet, thanks.

Reed shows up in Yahoo lineup, so must have been cleared.

Wait. Yahoo has a team now? Well, they'll probably beat the Cubs if they do.

reed was there last night.

bob b. was making jokes about it looked like m.byrd and r.johnson got into a fight because they both had black eyes.

Why Carpenter? He was recently demoted to AA from Iowa because his velocity is down and his BB rate is terrible. Dolis, who is on the 40 man is a much better choice. I just don't get it.

it's time to see what carp has on the mlb level, anyway.

he's gone from 1-time interesting starting fringe prospect to too-wild pen guy.

he's 25.5 years old...time to see what he's got if he's got it at all.

dolis has control issues of his own, but yeah, he's the better prospect and probably the better arm at this point.

Colvin sent down with Johnson activated. I assume either Jersey Shore or Lamehieu will get sent down when Sorryano is activated, most likely D.J.

2 cubs errors so far...neat.

make that 3 errors...

okay, so cubs pitchers still can't bunt.

i'm willing to give garza a little time to catch up, but c'mon...

it's wells first game back, but going 0-2 on 2 attempts is plain old cubbery.

bunting the 3rd foul for a K is solid gold cubbery.

and fuku flies out for out 2...which should have been out 2 with a run scoring at least.

r.johnson still sitting on 2nd because a pitcher couldn't get a bunt down in 3 tries.

scored tix for sunday night game hooray
wells is pitching..ugh

free tix are free tix

I'm going to go out on a limb...Brewers win World Series this year.

Wow...yet another error. What is wrong with these players?!?

It's like it is infectious. It could be an issue with moving people around from position to position. But it isn't all Quade...the players have to take some blame.

Speaking of that, Soraino 0-2 with 2 K so far tonight. 1-9 in Iowa so far.

castro x2, wells x1

castro's problem is he's castro...he did make a nice run saving play in the 1st, though.

"the players have to take some blame"

Jim Hendry?

Randy Wells can go away too

quade fail on not arguing that non-out that was an out at 2nd...unless we're missing something there.

"so...ronnie belliard will retire as an iron pig." - len
"it's the kind of thing you dream about when you're a kid." - bob
"iron pigs win! iron pigs win!" - len

and here comes "other" carpenter for his debut...inheriting man on 2nd, 1 out.

1st up a RBI double to r.weeks.

welcome to the cubs.

throwing 95-98mph (99mph on the stadium gun)

took him 10 pitches to throw a slider...and it got him a K.

slider clocked in at the high 80s...damn.

Cub Carpenter is the preferred nickname :)

and immediately gives up an RBI double.

Fits right in

He's not really a Cub pitcher until he walks a run in.

checked Sam Fuld's numbers

OMG! How could the Cubs ever trade him!!

228/279/345 14/21 SB's

You made Phil Rogers cry

...oh wait, the cubs are 10000 games out of 1st.

and quade gets ejected again...arguing something he's wrong about.

fans are 100% behind him, though...that's something. he's not enjoying a lot of public support lately. at least it's not public hate.

Still a honeymoon. How often does a Cubs manager get the harassment in the first year, although Baylor was pretty close.

LaTroy pitching at Wrigley.

I know how this story ends.

God spared LaTroy this time. Finally.

oh sweet...the 5 man infield. love this shift.

ninja gets 2 wins in 2 days.

Barney to the DL. Baker everyday?

Cubs are going to call up Baez

Or Sczur

  • Clayton Richard is absolutely, positively NOT a free-agent. He is under club control through the 2016 season.

  • Haren was 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA with the Cubs. Seems like he worked out just as expected.

  • Did they ever say or who the PTBNL or cash decision on Rodney was or who was the PTBNL in the Austin Jackson deal was yet? Neither was worth whatever they gave up. Cahill and Richard were the only two good "deadline" deals they made. Hunter (given Lake was the odd man out by far and taking up a roster spot) and Haren weren't worth it.

  • says he is, site says he's a Cub, great cooperation between the 2 sites, weird

  • The drafting of Shea at #1 was a sign of things to come -- an undersized white linebacker who's not particularly fast; lets make him an NFL defensive end! Just idiotic. When the best thing you can say about your #1 pick is that he has a "high motor", that's a problem...that's what you should say about late-round picks.

  • Not AZ PHIL but after being DFA'd by the Cubs (after they got him from the Pirates in the "I get a chance in the Majors clause"), the Cubs re-signed him for the remainder of the season. I do not believe service time is an issue for him, so he is eligible to opt for Major League Free Agency - which he is doing and the Cubs or someone else will sign him to an MLB deal. AZ PHIL please correct this if you see fit - but that is the most current info that I'm aware of.

  • To also be fair to Emery, wtf do you draft Shea McLellin as a #1, Jonathan Bostic in the same draft, let Peppers go in lieu of signing Jared Shit-Head, Brandon Hardin, Evan Rodriguez, Isiah Frey, on and on...

I will give him credit for Kyle Long - who is like my favorite player (what does THAT say about the team - but he did throw in the 90's as a former pitcher), and Jeffrey.

  • Geo Soto leaves the WSux and signs with the Angels who lost Chris Ianetta to the Mariners.

Freed... The Angels also promoted Bobby Scales from director of player development to special assistant

  • AZ PHIL- Is Clayton Richard a free agent or not? One site I see he is, on another no. MLB has him listed as a free agent, Cot's contracts says he is a FA, baseball-reference says he's not, but Cubs have him on active roster. I know that he is just short of MLB 6 years service by just like 15 days, but that doesn't always matter.

  • Except that he gave up Russell and McKinney for a half-season of Hammel...

  • Beane cam at least point and laugh at Hammel.

  • The genius Angelo traded Olsen at Martzs request

  • Maybe Theo will sign Shark just so he can call Billy Beane and say: "Let's see...Russell? Check. McKinney? Check. Hammel? Check. Ninja? Check. Any other deals?"

  • To be fair to Emery and Trestman the foreshadowing of last year started happening well before them with the failure or mismanaging of multiple draft classes forcing the team to overspend in a free agency market that is even worse than baseball. Kyle Long seems like a good pick but they traded away another good one in Olson because of Martz's stupidity and inability to change his offense to fit the team talent.

  • HAGSAG: I think Domonic Brown does fit the criteria of a reclamation project, but unless he is willing to accept a minor league contract with an NRI to Spring Training, I don't think the Cubs would be interested given where the Cubs are right now. A couple of years ago? Yes. But probably not now.

Brown would be better-off going to a club that is rebuilding and re-establish his value there, like Chris Coghlan did with the Cubs. And if he can re-establish his value, he could get traded to a contender at the trade deadline and take it from there.

  • "they just fade away"

(Except in the cases of no-fade lefties like Moyer, Orosco and Rich Hill.)
