Your 2011 Boise Hawks and Your 2011 AZL Cubs!

As I mentioned in a comment on a previous thread yesterday, Paul Hoilman (2011 19th round draft pick out of East Tennessee State) hit a 450+ ft HR over the CF Green Monster off Jin Young Kim in a "live" BP session at Field Park Field #2 yesterday morning.
Hoilman was the Home Run Derby champ at the 2010 College World Series, and finished tied for third in HR in NCAA Div-1 this season. I am going to go WAY out on a limb and predict that Hoilman will lead the Northwest League in HR. He is a beast.
And if he flops at baseball he is an Academic All-American majoring in math, and plans to eventually attend either medical school or law school.

As a general rule of thumb (and there are exceptions), HS and JC draft picks are usually assigned to the AZL Cubs, and college draft picks get assigned to Boise (if there is room).
College players who don't sign immediately after the conclusion of the draft usually have to spend some time with the AZL Cubs before moving up to Boise, and then if and when they do move up, guys who were initially assigned to Boise could get released or could get demoted to AZL Cubs or could get promoted to Peoria to make room for the new guys (if the Boise roster is full).
Four college pitchers (P. J. Francescon, Pete Levitt, Casey Lucchese, and Sheldon McDonald) are presently at Fitch Park, and any or all could move up to Boise in short order.
Also, Florida State just got eliminated at a Super Regional, so FSU senior catcher Rafael Lopez (Cubs 16th round draft pick) will probably be assigned to Boise soon after he signs. He is obviously in playing shape.
Other college picks who would likely get to Boise pretty fast if and when they sign would include U. of Miami 2B-CF Zeke DeVoss, U. of Louisville RHRP Tony Zych, U. of Alabama OF Taylor Dugas, U. of Texas LHRP Andrew McKirahan (presently with the Longhorns at the College World Series), Florida State OF Taiwan Easterling, TCU RHSP Steven Maxwell, and Clemson RHRP Scott Weismann. In fact, Zych, Dugas, and Maxwell (who is a 5th year senior) could get jumped to Peoria. But again, that's only if they sign.
Taiwan Easterling is an interesting case. Because he also plays college football, the Cubs can spread his bonus out over five years, but with strings attached (as was the case with Matt Szczur this time last year), with Easterling returning to Florida State for the Fall Semester to play football, before deciding whether to puruse a career in pro baseball or in pro football.

With the Cubs performing as they are it's nice to look forward to next year, or the one after, etc. etc. Thanks for all of the interesting info.

CHUCK: Boise should have a pretty good team.
A starting rotation/piggyback group consisting of Liria-Wang-Wells-Reed-Kim-Cruz-Rosario are all quality arms, ex-OF Kyler Burke and ex-3B Charles Thomas have made tremendous strides in their conversions to pitcher, Pin-Chieh Chen really started to play well at Extended Spring Training once he was moved from 2B to CF and he could be a dynamite lead-off hitter, Yaniel Cabezas was unofficial EXST Cubs MVP (he led the team in RBI and handled himself very well behind the plate), and the quintet of Klafczynski-Hoilman-Fitzgerald-Golden-Contreras should be a powerful force in the middle of the Hawks order (DJ Fitz struggled big time at Peoria, but he should feast on the lesser pitching he'll see at Boise).

====================================
PAUL N: Reggie Golden really struggled the last four weeks of Extended Spring Training.
After hitting a HR in his 1st AB at Talking Stick on May 10th, Golden hit 123/206/123 in his next 63 PA, going 7-57 with 21 K, four BB, and two HBP, and all seven of the hits were singles.
And you could really see the frustration, too. Obviously he had never struggled like that before.
While he could turn out to be a RH version of Michael Burgess, I think he'll probably be OK long-term. He has as much power as anybody in the Cubs organization. He just needs to get himself into better condition next off-season and keep his eyes on the prize.

Casey Coleman was recalled to replace Brad Snyder, Baker was activated when Kerry Wood went on the DL, and Carpenter will replace Coleman (presumably).
The Cubs would have had to add Carpenter to their 40-man roster post-2011 anyway (he's eligible for the Rule 5 Draft next December), so it's just a few months early.

It's like it is infectious. It could be an issue with moving people around from position to position. But it isn't all Quade...the players have to take some blame.
