Wells off the wagon

Nice job on the crossword. :)

It's kinda long.
Maybe drag it on a plane or something...

Finished it last night, well except for 17 across and 38 across. I showed my wife and she got 17 right away... her coolness factor went up a notch.

38? Little help? Here's what I got: _ A N
Maybe I'm missing a clue?

Here's a few suggestions:

38 Trader Jim, try to take your firing like a ____.
38 What team do your root for? Oh, you're a Cub ___, I'm so sorry!
38 Former Cubs LHP, who once did pre and post game show on Comcast, but jumped ship for the MLB Network: ___ Plesac

I really enjoyed the crossword. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
I think my favorites were 36 across, 11 down, and 26 down.

Hi MrCoach.
I figured I'd mess up at least something.
Meantime you figured it out with your second suggestion.
And nice with the sarcasm there and in your favs.

Byrd is going to wear a special helmet with a face guard. Not surprising.

But there's a picture in the article for those who want a preview.

I don't know, but he is built like a truck.

Cubs now with the 2nd worst record in the majors. Woot! Eleventy!!11

Can the brain-dead owner put away his stuffed unicorn animals now and start firing people? Hendry and Quade both need to go before the 4th of July. Put someone in there as an interim for the remainder of the season and get Ryno on the horn for next year. Ask Maddux if he wants to be a GM. Start repairing this train-wreck please.

that's all smoke/mirrors anyway. draft is over...all that's left is to find out what cubs contracts can be traded for prospects, filler, and/or cash. they're not even holding a tradable hot contract that would bring impact. hopefully kerry wood can get his blisters taken care of and put a few good weeks on the mound to showcase his stuff...

hendry's probably on his last go-around. i can't imagine him surviving this offseason.

i don't think he's done anything wrong, but he's done too much of not doing it right for a while. you can only spin wheels for so long before you get your walking papers. hendry doesn't even have the 1st-round-playoff-losers thing to clutch to recently.

i still dunno what ryno is supposed to do for anyone, though...besides sell some jerseys to fans. i wonder if he's still a lover of the bunt this season after pushing it in the cubs system.

i don't think he's done anything wrong

Blink...blink, blink.

I'll leave the Hendry comments alone. :)

I agree on Ryno, though. I would be far more interested in a guy like Eric Wedge. I'm still not convinced a manager makes a huge difference, but we have seen Quade put the team at a disadvantage when he, for example, depends on Koyie Hill in the 9th inning.

What do you like about Eric Wedge?

Likable guy. Big league managing talent.

Ryno has one of those attributes, not the other.

So, when I say "someone like Eric Wedge", this is what I mean: Likable, Big league management ability.

What does this mean:

Big league management ability.

Because I simply don't have a good answer for that, let me answer your question with another question:

What makes you believe Ryno wouldn't come up to manage a big league team and do exactly what Quade's done? I would be more comfortable with a guy who managed in the big leagues before.

You'd be more comfortable with a guy who got shit-canned for turning a 96 win team into a 65 win team in two years? Wait.. are we talking about Wedge or Piniella here?

Eric Wedge was an astounding 27 games under his pythagorean record in his time in Cleveland. That's the worst I've ever seen.

  • deno ended the season well even though ajax heavily cut into a lot of his chances to play. it's either him or ajax. i'm a bit partial to deno, but least ajax isn't hitting 2nd.

  • Agreed. And, with Hendricks on the mound, Cubs will probably need to score some runs to win -- why not start Soler for his bat and bring in Ajax for defense later?

    NEVER MIND....just re-read the lineup.

  • If the Cubs have the lead in the 8th, who pitches? Rodney? Travis? Yikes.

  • The Cubs had some good runs and nice winning streaks that propelled them to the playoffs. Austin Jackson wasn't part of that. I don't quite understand what it is about Jackson that they are so enamored with.

  • I think the strike zone was very inconsistent, but it's hard to blame the loss on the ump. They had chances and mistake pitches and just couldn't cash in. Lackey ran the ball inside and outside very effectively.

  • Correct. Castro 5th, AJax 6th; I'll edit my lineup post to fix this.

  • Lineup: Fowler, Soler, KB, Rizzo, Castro, AJax, Montero, Hendricks, Russell

  • if he put ajax 1st/2nd in the f'n playoffs he deserves to lose his nearly sure-thing MOY award to terry collins.

  • I believe Castro batting fifth, Ajax (LF) sixth

  • Maddon did not listen to me yesterday re Strop, or EricS on Schwarbs today.

    Wtf is up w/that?!

  • Crunch got his wish - Ajax not hitting 1-2 in the lineup ...

  • I know he's struggles against lefties but Schwarber seems zoned in - hope he starts tonight.

  • Awesome stuff, Phil.

  • listening on ESPN 1000, caller says Bill Welke will be the home plate ump today. Supposedly his reputation is for having an even bigger strike zone than last night's Phil Cuzzi. Some of the issues with bad umpiring come from an inconsistent strike zone. Hoping at least for consistency. Last night's called strike on David Ross was outright embarrassing for Cuzzi.

That might work out in favor of Kyle Hendricks, who benefits much from a large strike zone.

  • it's kind of mesmerizing to watch
should Theo add some Ted Abernathy videos for minor league pitching coordinator's use?

sadly, Ted passed away in 2004 from complications of Alzheimers. I always loved the Cub bullpen trio of Phil Regan, Ted Abernathy and Hank Aguirre. As a kid, I even worked on both Phil Regan (very quirky delivery) and Ted Abernathy (extreme submarine) imitations when throwing a rubber ball against a wall. It wasn't a good imitation unless I could scrape my knuckles off the ground. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for submariners.

  • HAGSAG: Chris Pieters was sent to instructs to develop his hitting, bunting, and outfield play (he is already a decent first-baseman).

Pieters is tall and rangy , a "long-strider" in the same mold as Trey Martin and Rashad Crawford. He is a very patient hitter (unusual for a hitter with his lack of experience) and has an outstanding (almost uncanny) eye at the plate, and he is a fast runner with unusually good baserunning instincts, and he is a good basestealer, too.
