You'd think Lou would let his regulars get some hacks against Johan, since they may see him in the first round, but he seems to have gone the opposite route and sits most some of his regulars. Curious.

The Cubs want to try and take 2 of 3 or at least 1 of 3 from the Mets and hope the Brewers take 2 of 3 from the Pirates or sweep them. That would set up a tie between the Mets and the Brewers heading into the final weekend and increases the odds of them having to use their aces (C.C. or Johan) late in the season. That's more of a concern with the Mets when it comes to the Cubs playoff situation, but the more innings C.C. racks up now, the better chance he'll be less effective by the time the Cubs may face him in the playoffs. The Cubs also need to win 5 of 6 for 100 wins assuming the Monday make-up versus the Astros is not played.

looked a lot like something else given the way you asked...especially since i never mentioned cedeno. either way, that #5 hitter looks good for starters...the one with 20 homers...how about moving johnson up to hitting 1/2 slot if he's so adept? i can see an argument for johnson hitting 2nd a lot more than hitting 4th, but whatever. if you can't see my logic i dunno how to give you more to work with.

Soto sitting isn't a surprise...Theriot has been struggling lately until yesterday, so resting him seems fine. Ramirez however, I would think would want to take some hacks against Santana. I wonder if part of this is Lou doesn't want to give a psychological edge to the Mets. If Santana goes out and dominates the Cubs playoff starters, the media and press could start talking about how the Cubs could be easily upset by Santana and the Mets in the playoffs. Doubt it, but you never know.

Obligatory: This lineup sucks. At this point I care about our team being well rested and ready for the playoffs, getting 100 wins and finishing with a better record than the Angels. Also that nobody gets hurt. Did I miss anything?

I agree that priority #1 needs to be resting everyone, not getting hurt, while still giving everyone enough time to avoid rust. I don't think the Cubs should bother getting wrapped up in what they can do to confound other teams...

I think one interesting advantage the Cubs have is that they play both of the top wild card contenders in these "Meaningless games". Meaning, as long as they rest players equally against both the Mets and the Brewers, those teams should have nothing to complain about.

well yeah, I think i said and showed that DeRosa was the only other one really worth batting 4th ------------- if Lou tries to rest ARam tomorrow night, he can bat Z 4th.

It's possible that Cedeno is being made to audition for a playoff-roster spot this week. Either that, or he is just getting some much-needed at bats. Again, I don't really see the need for a backup shortstop in the playoffs since the starter isn't going to rest. If Theriot is injured, Cedeno can be activated for the next game. If it's just a couple of innings, DeRosa and Fontenot have played a little short. Not a big Ronny fan this week, I'd like to see him yield to Hoffpauir or Pie. Of course, then you've got nobody to PH right-handed, but that was the problem with only bringing up McGehee. I don't particularly want to see Cedeno or McGehee come to the plate in the late innings of a close game with the season on the line.

My memory is as long as Santo's and I don't have a casual attitude toward the Mets. Historically, they think they own the Cubs. I really hope the Cubs win the Zambrano and Harden games. It's easier to stamp the Mets out this week than it will be next week. Why wait?

I'm 24 hours late, but since nobody else mentioned it on this site ... ... This Day in Cubs Misery Sept. 23, 1908 Merkle's Boner. Comcast Sportsnet ran a great feature on Merkle, and "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" also did a good job. Olbermann basically reran his piece that he did when he worked for CNN 25 years ago (upon occasion of the 75th anniversary). Both pieces were sympathetic towards Merkle, saying that baserunners typically left the basepaths upon occasion of game-winning walkoff hits in order to avoid fans streaming on to the field that intended on mobbing them. Umpires never called them on it. This was a heck of smart play by Johnny Evers, and I bet he had thought about it in advance (though maybe not mugging the fan for the ball). Olbermann referred to it as the most controversial play in sports history. ... and ... Sept. 23, 1998 Brant Brown's dropped fly ball. Nuff said.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.
