Cub Ticket Lawsuit Fever—Catch It!

So maybe you and a group of acquaintances divvy up some Cubs season tickets. Now that the boys are going to the playoffs and playing an as-yet-undetermined number of games at Wrigley, what do you do? What else—you sue!

The Tribune offers this story about litigious Cub fans, including Laurence Wright, a Northbrook businessman who is sick of getting ground under the heel of The Man...even when The Man is an 84-year-old with heart and hip problems.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080926&content_id=3552133&vke… there's the rundown... if Phils, Mets, Brewers are tied, then Phils play Mets on Monday for the East and loser goes to Milwaukee on Tuesday to decide the wild card. I don't think it matters much for the Cubs, I mean the Rockies did alright playing a tiebreaker last year. More importantly is that the races are still open on Sunday as all 3 teams have their aces scheduled (Hamels, Sabathia and Johan).

via Rotoworld Mark DeRosa was spotted "wearing a boot and limping around the clubhouse" on Thursday after leaving Wednesday's game with a strained left calf. Manager Lou Piniella said DeRosa will be out for the rest of the regular season and we're thinking he might not be available for the entire National League Division Series. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=238213&src=152 I think the boot is pretty common these days and speeds up healing (paging Cubster), so don't completely freak out.

The initial word was a minor calf strain, indicating muscle injury to the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) which attach to the achilles tendon. We've been through this before with Soriano and ARam but there are more minor versions of this meaning missing just a few days or a week. The boot is also called a cam-walker brace. The brace has a rounded bottom (or rocker bottom) which rolls instead of putting the foot flat (which normal shoes do) in an attempt to lessen the strain on the achilles tendon (therefore lessening the strain on the calf muscles). This brace is removable and is very commonly used for a wide range of injuries including calf strains, ankle sprains and hairline fractures in the foot and ankle. I wouldn't think using such a brace excludes him from being ready by next wednesday. I'm sure he's getting alot of therapy from the trainers as a minor strain might be the lingo one step above a cramp and one step below a grade 1 injury (although by definition if it's a minor strain it is a grade 1 injury). Unless we hear that they are going to use an MRI to look at it further, I'll assume they think he still day-to-day-to-day...until it's finally today. It will be more clear how things are going wrt DeRosa by monday. named game 1 starter for Dodgers if we play them likely Billingsley and then Kuroda Lou wants to get Z some more innings before the playoffs, might pitch in relief for a few innings this weekend.

I just checked run differentials for the first time in, well, a while. It's pretty amazing. Cubs at +186, Brewers at +59. The only other NL team above 100 is Philly at +109. Boston is down 2 games to the Rays but has a 60pt higher differential (165-105). I don't really have a point, I just thought I'd share that. Also, it'd really suck to lose DeRosa.

not that you'd want to put 8 Ozzie Smith's out there, but I think defense is a little more important in the playoffs if it's not a ridiculous offensive advantage.

All his struggles, Fukudome's still managed a .371 OBP vs lefties and no real significant split. Hell, even if DeRosa is healthy, I'd rather see him out there in RF and DeRosa at 2b.

vs righties and if DeRosa is healthy, I'd like to see DeRosa in RF and Fontenot at 2b.

and I want to see Ronny Cedeno eaten by a rancor.

Here is a crazy thought...Cubs could easily go Dempster, Harden, Lilly in any combination and use Zambrano in middle relief to possibly bridge the gap for Marmol and Wood. With Z's previous problem with his shoulder he might be experiencing weakness and can't bounce back as fast. He looked great coming off the DL but since then not so much. I would like to see Zambrano in the rotation but maybe going 2-3 innings in relief at full speed is better help to his team than trying to go 6-7 at 80% or whatever. I don't know just thinking crazy.

In Lou's defense ERA is a pretty new metric and really may not be an accurate measure of his worth as a relief pitcher. The only way to really know how effective he'll be is to send him out there in the playoffs with the game on the line and see.

I like Z pitching Game 2...if we win game 1. If we lose game 1, the pressure could be enough to make his head explode. I would have prefered to flip Z and Harden...but I guess having Z pitch at home where he could have a little more support and less stress, could be a good thing.

Chad. It's 2008. Z has been awful in 8 of his last 9 starts...and has given up 13ER in the last 6.1 innings (including 2 Grand Slams). Last year he went into the playoffs with a hot September. This year he is going into the playoffs with 2 of his worst starts in his career. Do I think Z is capable of dominating. Yes. Absolutely, and boy do I hope he does. But fact is, I don't know what were going to get from Z, and I think I could count on him more with a 1-0 lead then down 1-0 in a must win game.

    Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.

    They certainly could be coupled. It could also be the case that a team needs good players at the heart of the team and if they are not coming from one source (development) they have to be sought out elsewhere. I don't see the evidence needed to infer the cause.

    Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

    Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

    The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

    Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
    He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
    Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

    Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

    Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.
