Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo

Dan Vogelbach, Danny Lockhart, and Xavier Batista drove-in the runs, as the Cubs rallied for two in the 8th and two more in the 9th to defeat the Angels 5-3 in Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ.

Cub pitchers threw 6.1 IP of no-hit ball before the Angels were able to register a safety, but the Angels did score a run without the benefit of a hit in both the bottom of the 3rd and the bottom of the 5th, thanks to six walks (including four consecutive two-out walks by Su-Min Jung in the 5th), two stolen bases, and a passed ball.

Cubs Player of the Game was Shawon Dunston Jr, who reached base three times on a triple, a single, and a walk, laid-down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt, and made an outstanding diving catch in LF for the first out in the bottom of the 8th after the Cubs had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the frame.

garza almost gets a complete game...119 pitches and pulled on what should have been out 3...but garza threw the ball away for an error. 8.2ip 3h 2bb 9k

Pretty happy with the rotation so far.

1 through 4

I can only assume (hope) that Maholm will return to form in his next start.

brian wilson (SF) back to back 24+ pitch appearances...throwing 89mph fastballs right now and still in the game.

weird.

He really hasn't been the same since they abandoned the Smile sessions

Nice

Maybe he should shave?

Beards actually reduce pitch speed by 2%.

- beard + k.hill = normal velocity.

Awesome

Clevenger's gonna lead the league in doubles.

Reggie Golden suffered a leg injury (hammy?) in Appleton last night. Any guesses on who will replace him?

TIM: I would say probably Xavier Batista.

He was the last cut from the Peoria squad at Minor League Camp prior to Opening Day.

Yasiel Balaguert is the other possibility.

That's due soon, as well, no?

Anyone know what happened to Abner Abreu? Haven't seen his name this spring...

Az Phil said he was released.

clevenger has already equaled his predecessor's 2011 total for two-base hits...

But do pitchers like throwing to him?

And does he add 5mph to a pitcher's fastball?

Better have him catch Hayden Simpson. Then he can get over 90.

The Cubs have 2 wins in the 2 games Clevenger started.

Maybe we should blame Soto for the 5 losses. Or Maybe Soto takes 5 mph off everyones fastball.

Sveum seems to be settling on a standard line up.

Another way to add a few mph to Jake Peavy's fastball besides signing Koyie Hill-

Is there going to be a game today?

they're trying...still nothing. it seems they don't want to postpone unless it's totally necessary given how long they've had to cancel it pre-game. the OF should be a mess...not horrible, but not totally safe. i wonder if soriano will start.

supposedly 1st pitch is about to happen, but WGN is still showing chuck f'n norris.

mlb game day says:
Delayed
Ceremony

(no comment on weather)

oh yeah, the cards WS ceremony thing...trophy, i think.

wgn tv says rain delay

tarp's off the field and etc...WGN seems to be sparing people from the STL WS trophy presentation.

it's been raining for hours, though.

"Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports that Mike Fontenot will sign a minor league contract with the Phillies."

adam wainright...u suuuuuuuuck today.

4-0, 1 out top 1st...i.stewart hits his 1st homer on a hanging slider in the middle of the plate (1st since aug. 23 2010 in the bigs).

crunchtime!!!!

wow, that wasn't a hanging slider...it was a 89mph fastball.

wainright's fastballs have all been 89-91mph, mostly 90mph.

i thought he had all his stuff back, including the mid-90s fastball. damn.

Ian Stewart with a 3 run blast. 4-0

and just one out

Stewarts first HR in 2 seasons

He might only hit on one plane but he's doing pretty good for us doing it!

his shoulders/top-arm are locked in his swing with little vertical movement in his swing leading to bad contact...this isn't a good thing. it's why you're going to see a lot of line drives and pounding grounders to the right side. lol.

Let's see Silent Z make 'em stand up!

i know it's still way way way too early, but ninja being this effective is weird...i at least expected more wildness.

He's always had good stuff. Maybe he's learned how to pitch.

He's throwing strikes, the splitter is as good at his been, and the slider is suddenly relevant. I'm damn happy.

GRAND SLAM LAHAIR!

wainright is horrible today...bad location, leaving a lot of stuff on the plate.

8-0 cubs, top 3rd.

Glad to see that LaHair is making the most of his big chance.

That was a weird grand slam. Just kept looking like an out, and poof, out it went.

When do you know Wainwright is having a bad game.?When Byrd gets a hit.

breaking an 0-20 slump...ugg.

Byrd has demonstrated 0 veteran know-how so far this season. He's looked like he has no thoughts at all on how to approach a plate appearance.

Ha

Liking my Samardzija win leader prediction

I picked him, too, in Rob's survey. Just a wild hunch though, not like I knew anything special

I'm sad that I picked Maholm as being the hyena #3 pitcher picking off the weaker #5s. That's not going to beat out whoever is best out of Garza, Dempster, or Samardzija. Don't know why I thought that would get him more wins than the top of the rotation. Guess maybe I was thinking that Garza and/or Dempster might get traded.

I picked Maholm because I expected Garza to get traded. I think Maholm will get a few. Not giving up yet, but I'll admit giving up garza is not gonna be easy . . . Dude is a real great presence. Seems to *really* give a crap . . . And he can pitch. Maybe we don't dump that kinda guy after all?

or not

Samardzija suddenly throwing batting practice.

Samardzija may have gotten hit a bit there at the end of his outing, but in the early going it looks like JedStein's biggest offseason achievement was the development of the body switching technology that swapped the real Ninja and Soriano for players that can throw strikes and catch fly ball, respectively.

I think the Bulls have kind of shown what a focused, efficient, confident team can do - without having stars dominating any aspect of the team. If anything they play better without Rose right now. Looking forward to having him back though.

But all this is to say that the awesome feeling of watching LaHair and Stewart pound the Cardinals while Ninja hangs in there, and our backup catcher the Double Machine yesterday etc etc. what a breath of Fresh Air these guys are after the bloated stars and managers of recent years. They might suck cellar air and lose 100 games like many of you say. But I'll stick with my 78+ win prediction and I'm already having more fun than at any point in the last two years. Plus i-Cubs are fun to check in on.

  • Unless he develops 30+ HR power and keeps his walk rate close to his K rate at the MLB level, he's not going to turn into Prince Fielder. And even if he does turn into Prince Fielder, he's gonna have a short prime. His very limited athleticism is likely to also detract some value from his ability to reach base--I don't buy making an out as being preferable to base clogging, but you'd certainly prefer just about any base runner other than Vogelbach, David Ortiz, etc.

  • seeing as arod has played a total of 27.1 innings of D at 1st/3rd and somehow managed a -0.5 dWAR with his 1 error at 1st and an overall positive total zone rating...he might end up even more in the shitter via the characteristics/flaws/whatever of how some sites determine various WAR values. dWAR doesn't directly lead to a WAR value, but the 2 main entities pushing the most popular variations of WAR sometimes lead to some interesting discrepancies in value.

  • I have a lot of faith in Baez that he's going to turn into a more consistent, solid player. It looks like it took him about a half season or so of futility at the plate to figure out he was not talented enough to get away with the crazy approach he had. I think his running game will eventually have a more measured aggression.

  • I hope the D and bullpen show up. Cubs haven't had much luck against Davies, and he's been going well lately. A little uncomfortable with the Cards only 6.5 back--feels like they're right on our tails compared to the 11 game lead I've grown accustomed to.

  • Cardinals, stop that. Right now.

  • In a year or two, a lot of fans are going to point at trading him as a mistake. He'll probably be slashing something like 280/400/480 for Seattle at the time. Of course, by WAR, he'll still be worth less than 3, since we're talking zero defensive value.

  • vogelbomb debut for tacoma (AAA SEA)... 3-3, 1bb, 1 HR, 1 double...DH'd.

while he mostly played 1st considerably more than DH for AAA CHC, DJ Peterson is probably going to see most of the time at 1st for AAA SEA.

  • Carl Jr.! Very nice!

Baez with another "WTF?" play trying a delayed steal with a runner on 3rd and one out.. Remarkable talent, needs to make better decisions.

...and rondon ends it 22 pitches in with a popout to RF.

  • I gotta say with the crappy defense the Brewers have displayed outside of Fowler I'm pretty disappointed the offense hasn't shown more and Rizzo seems to be very swing happy lately. That said my god am I happy Madden has finally given Carl Edwards a chance after multiple times up with nothing. I don't think he could handle a starting role with his body frame but his stuff plays so well in a relief role and he seems to be able to handle high stress situations very well.

  • glad to see almora going to AAA to get work.

    .265/.291/.422 through 86PA...2hr, 7 doubles.

i don't expect too much of an improvement when he's taking over CF next year, but the team doesn't really need him right now as much as they need him to get regular work (imo).

  • The problem with the September roster is all of the pitching changes. They should find a way to limit pitchers to twelve except for extra inning games. More pinch hitters or pinch runners do little to slow the game down and are more fun than endless calls to the bullpen. I also think the fans get cheated when they use position players to pitch because employed a half dozen pitchers with righty-lefty switches. Having as few as four positions players on the bench to start a game also leads to some pretty ugly defensive substitutions.
