Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo
Dan Vogelbach, Danny Lockhart, and Xavier Batista drove-in the runs, as the Cubs rallied for two in the 8th and two more in the 9th to defeat the Angels 5-3 in Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ.
Cub pitchers threw 6.1 IP of no-hit ball before the Angels were able to register a safety, but the Angels did score a run without the benefit of a hit in both the bottom of the 3rd and the bottom of the 5th, thanks to six walks (including four consecutive two-out walks by Su-Min Jung in the 5th), two stolen bases, and a passed ball.
Cubs Player of the Game was Shawon Dunston Jr, who reached base three times on a triple, a single, and a walk, laid-down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt, and made an outstanding diving catch in LF for the first out in the bottom of the 8th after the Cubs had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the frame.

TIM: I would say probably Xavier Batista.
He was the last cut from the Peoria squad at Minor League Camp prior to Opening Day.
Yasiel Balaguert is the other possibility.

And does he add 5mph to a pitcher's fastball?
Re: Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo

Better have him catch Hayden Simpson. Then he can get over 90.

The Cubs have 2 wins in the 2 games Clevenger started.
Maybe we should blame Soto for the 5 losses. Or Maybe Soto takes 5 mph off everyones fastball.

they're trying...still nothing. it seems they don't want to postpone unless it's totally necessary given how long they've had to cancel it pre-game. the OF should be a mess...not horrible, but not totally safe. i wonder if soriano will start.

wow, that wasn't a hanging slider...it was a 89mph fastball.
wainright's fastballs have all been 89-91mph, mostly 90mph.
i thought he had all his stuff back, including the mid-90s fastball. damn.

his shoulders/top-arm are locked in his swing with little vertical movement in his swing leading to bad contact...this isn't a good thing. it's why you're going to see a lot of line drives and pounding grounders to the right side. lol.

Re: Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo
on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 5:10pm Permalink
I'm sad that I picked Maholm as being the hyena #3 pitcher picking off the weaker #5s. That's not going to beat out whoever is best out of Garza, Dempster, or Samardzija. Don't know why I thought that would get him more wins than the top of the rotation. Guess maybe I was thinking that Garza and/or Dempster might get traded.
Re: Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo
on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 5:54pm Permalink
I picked Maholm because I expected Garza to get traded. I think Maholm will get a few. Not giving up yet, but I'll admit giving up garza is not gonna be easy . . . Dude is a real great presence. Seems to *really* give a crap . . . And he can pitch. Maybe we don't dump that kinda guy after all?

Re: Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo
on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 6:27pm Permalink
Samardzija may have gotten hit a bit there at the end of his outing, but in the early going it looks like JedStein's biggest offseason achievement was the development of the body switching technology that swapped the real Ninja and Soriano for players that can throw strikes and catch fly ball, respectively.

I think the Bulls have kind of shown what a focused, efficient, confident team can do - without having stars dominating any aspect of the team. If anything they play better without Rose right now. Looking forward to having him back though.
But all this is to say that the awesome feeling of watching LaHair and Stewart pound the Cardinals while Ninja hangs in there, and our backup catcher the Double Machine yesterday etc etc. what a breath of Fresh Air these guys are after the bloated stars and managers of recent years. They might suck cellar air and lose 100 games like many of you say. But I'll stick with my 78+ win prediction and I'm already having more fun than at any point in the last two years. Plus i-Cubs are fun to check in on.
