Game 11 Thread - Dempster vs. Johnson

After a day off, the Cubs head to Miami for their first series in their new ballpark and the return of Ozzie Guillen after a 5-game suspension, which should bring a healthy dose of national attention to the game.

Always wise to bat three lefties in a row for the later innings. ~shrug~

Interesting that he has LaHair batting 7th. I wonder if Sveum feels like LaHair is the second coming of Dave Kingman.

great article.

it's a bit sweeping, though not much. there is a scrutiny of the pen that's missing in some respects. to keep it recent...brian wilson. sergio romo, by virtue of numbers and effectiveness, should be the 100% no-doubt defacto closer, but the guy's arm is a lot more fragile that people might suspect. him going 2-3 in a row too often is something SF is looking to avoid because they think his arm would fall off. it's kinda similar to how k.wood wasn't being considered to full-time close when there was a c.marmol scare in spring.

overall it's right on...imo, people should be looking for the $5-$7m type closers rather than the $10m+ ones...even if you're a big spending team. there's plenty of guys who can fill that role effectively while $10m contracts are still being shelled out.

Rusin starting for Iowa

Beeler starting for Tennessee

Hi- A Daytona: Szczur 8, Alcantara 6, Andreoli 7, Rohan 3, Jones 0, Bonne 9, Silva 4, Noble 2, Harrington 5, Simpson pitching

Peoria: DeVoss 4, Darvill 6, Lopez 2, Cuneo 3, Easterling 9, Zapata 7, Hernandez DH, Zapenas 5, Chen 8, Francescon 1 #fb

Tennessee rained out.

Simpson rocked for 6 ER in 2.2 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 0 K, 1 HR.

Dayton down 6-5 though, C. Noble 2/2, Andreoli with a 2B and Elieser Bonne with a HR.

Iowa puts up a 3 spot to start, with a lineup of: Campana 7, Jackson 8, Valbuena 6, Rizzo 3, Cardenas 4, Lalli 2, Sappelt 9, Vitters 5, Rusin 1.

Rusin already has given 2 back and the first isn't over vs. Albuquerque

Peoria down 5-2 in 5th to Cedar Rapids, Francescon goes 3.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K. Pin-Chieh Chen with a triple.

1: vs. Colts
2: @ Packers (Thurs)
3: vs. Rams
4: @Cowboys (Mon)
5: @Jaguars
6: Bye
7: vs. Lions (Mon)
8: vs. Panthers
9: @Titans
10: vs. Texans (Sunday night)
11: @49ers (Mon)
12: vs. Vikings

14: @Vikings
15: vs. Packers
16: @Cardinals
17: @Lions

Games in order of toughest test: Packers(2) , 49ers, Texans, Lions(2), then a tie between Dallas, Titans. This could have been much worse.

if they can pull off an upset over Packers in Week 2, they can be 5-0 heading into the bye...or 2-3...or somewhere in-between.

@Packers in Week 2 and @49ers in Week 11 are the only games at this moment that look like should-be losses.

they will beat the 49ers, if healthy

this FLA feed is killing me (HD feed on EI)...it's been a 1 hour commercial inviting people to come out to the ballpark fighting with a 1 hour hour commercial for Fox Sports personalities + social media.

in between it all they're occasionally talking about the game.

Yeah it's just awful. Just constant chatter about nothing. Though it fits Florida perfectly.

this is getting really silly.

there's entire ABs not being called while they're talking about other stuff or doing interviews or reading twitters about guests...etc etc...

who is it?

FS Marlins annouce crew. you can tell this program direction is coming from "someone" in the booth guiding the direction.

they're doing tons of social media stuff, pimping the park, interviews with workers, interviews with their own FS staff, reading tweets about fluff...they've missed a few ABs while "reporters" were doing stories on things like the Fox Sports Girls at the park and the team shop.

the "guest" is the vice president of something or other from the team who was one of the people who helped design the stadium (not kidding). supposedly a fan wanted more info on this important cog of the 2012 marlins.

"vice president of ballpark development"

...and now they have a mic on him in the booth.

3-2 count on lahair...his name hasn't been mentioned or any of the pitches called.

Though let's be honest. Looking at that empty ballpark after spending so much money they probably need to do all they can to get people.

needs more ozzie kicking soto's mask...and soto pointing and laughing about it.

Haha and they basically have pole dancers doing awful dances. W. T. F.

Lol. Mlb.tv is nice sometimes. Good to be able to hear Len and Bob.

Does Marlon Byrd look a lot smaller this year? I know he was really into body building...I wonder if he's had to cut back on his "body building" which might have something to do with this awful hitting?

I think he switched to taebo, so now he's lean amd mean

I think they said he was down 40 lbs. from last season. Food allergies to gluten and milk products were discovered in the offseason. So he changed his diet in addition to the taebo or whatever it was. No mention of Victor Conte.

Thanks, didn't hear that. Every time I see him, I forget who he is...

I'd like to forget I ever saw him.

kind of like the bs that swirls around the stretch singers @ wrigley for a half inning each on radio & tv...

pretty much.

bounces into a productive out...seemed more luck than purposeful.

2nd/3rd with 0 outs and bounces a 3-2 pitch to the second baseman to score a run and advance Castro to 3rd.

cubs pitchers are the most awesome defenders in the game.

4 hours of pitcher's infield practice for everyone the next month!

paid off today...

Dempster throws away one for the marlins first run, Josh Johnson running.

1-1 in the 5th

DeJesus shows off his arm with a weak ass throw that can't nail the pitcher trying to score from 2nd. Do get Bonifacio in a rundown to end inning though.

2-1 Marlins after 5.

can't run tonight, either.

DeJesus then gets thrown out at 2b trying to advance on a wild pitch that didn't bounce away from Buck.

Ugh to me the steal (or the aggressive base running) is one of the most overrated aspects of the game. Seems like for the majority of players who try it it ends up backfiring more than it ends up helping. We'd have bases loaded or a score at this point if he hadn't tried running.

And Soriano coming back down to being him:-(

if you told me when he signed that soriano would be hitting cleanup for the cubs in 2012 i'd be thrilled at how awesome that contract actually turned out.

this is like some twilight zone twist...

gonna be a long season...

Well, to be fair, that was just bad luck. The ball hit the dirt and kicked away and you are taught to take off on those. The chances of the catcher recovering and throwing you out, especially if you go right away when you see the pitch headed for the dirt are very low. 19 times out of 20 Dejesus is safe. This one hit someones foot or something and bounced straight up the in air and Buck caught it standing up all ready to throw. Lucky bounce is all.

At this rate, Dempster is going to be a 0-11 All-Star starter.

Clevenger continues to double, 1 out in the the 7th.

Let's see the Cubs not score this run.

ooooooooooo safe!

and wtf is lahair still doing at 1st?

LaHair singles Clevenger home, looks like he just beat tag. Nice throw by Bonifacio.

wtf?

i mean, there's being aggressive and there's being stupid.

wow. lahair fail sb.

it's like a team of Ryan Theriot's.

LaHair almost picked off, then tries to steal before Johnson even lifts his leg and he just steps off and throws him out.

Have I mentioned how much I hate stealing?

ah, great news, the Cubs go to their strength, the bullpen!

Dolis in for the 7th.

lol

Dolis survives the 7th.

2-2 to the 8th, XM radio for me the rest of the way.

know it's a night game but is marlyn wearing his shades @ the plate? he should change his name to ray Charles or Stevie wonder... 059 ain't bad for a blind man!

That's marlyn bord in your program...

Barney boots a routine grounder. Clevenger passed ball, then a walk.

8th inning going well so far.

Hanley goes boom. 5-2 marlins.

Ugh stupid error. I guess though as bad as this is to watch I never had great expectations for this season and support the rebuild so I've been able to find more positives than some people. We got some very good starting pitching, good hitting at spots and what looks like some good hitting coming up to take over spots where we need help. Bullpen help can be found, imo, easier than a lot of other stuff so as bad as it is for us it doesn't seem like a long time worry if we do well at other places.

  • kuhl is a righty, not a lefty.

i think maddon might think kuhl is a lefty, too. i wonder what the reasoning is for baez leading off vs a rightie.

  • "trout's one of the best, and at this point should probably win over donaldson (and should have more MVPs in the past, too), but the defensive aspect of valuing WAR still needs more tweaking...imo."

that's from my 1st post. there's no suck involved in that. maybe with a few less posts about bullshit that point would have jumped out more.

  • crunch - you do know that, taking defense out of the equation, Trout has led the AL in wRC+ each of those years, right?

And, if you want to complain about position adjustment (which would be serious #crunchsplaining), he's been in the top 3 in the AL in WC (not park/league/position adjusted). And the only players ahead of him (if there were any players ahead of him) in any of those years have been DHs or 1B that play lousy defense.

But sure - Trout sucks (or at least isn't as good as WAR says). Because it factors in defense and position.

  • early tim tebow stuff rolling in...

ran a 6.7 60yd (above average)...shagging flies in RF and showed off a rather impressive arm a few times, but average-at best on most of his throws...hit a few over the fence (both fields), fouled or weak contact a few...he's got a touch of power

it'll be interesting to see who bites on this project, if anyone. he probably projected himself out of RF and into LF/1st because of his arm, but unless he can make that power work on a steady basis it'll be hard for him to play himself up anyone's system.

  • LHP Clayton Richard (released by the Cubs earlier this month) is pitching very well as a starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres and could be a good candidate to get traded to a contender looking for a veteran SP before tomorrow night's post-season roster eligibility deadline.

Because they released him, the Cubs are paying most of Richard's 2016 salary (the Cubs are on the hooks for $2M, minus the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary that is paid by the Padres).

  • it is honestly awesome (for real) that anyone would even have a strong opinion on AZL playoffs. i guess if you invest enough time watching it, you want to see a fair/just playoff structure.

    plus, the kids deserve it.

  • The AZL team with the best record over the course of the full 2016 AZL season and the only AZL team to play .600 ball (the AZL Dodgers) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, and the AZL East Division team with the best record over the course of the full season (the AZL Athletics) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, either.

That's because of the ridiculous "split season" schedule most of the minor leagues now play, a stupid system that rewards mediocrity at the expense of the worthy.

  • Despite good movement on his fastball, I think location kept him from getting Ks. Left some pitches up and away that got hammered up and away. Then of course Travis Wood gave up the 2-run double in the 7th, but both runs counted against Arrieta.

    Have a nice day.

  • Two things:

Fangraphs WAR #s include baserunning and Hamilton is elite at that. He leads in SBs with the 54 and and has an 87% rate which is really good. I'm sure once he gets on base he's able to take the extra base quite often too. Both those things will up his overall WAR value.

The differences between BR and FG WAR is pretty well documented online and thus If there are discrepancies it's fairly easy to figure out why. It's fairly well accepted that BR WAR is fine as a snapshot but FG is better at predicting future value.

  • i have no doubt at all you quit reading at that point. you're very enamored with outcomes without caring what it takes to get there.

the fact it's exploitable, especially without someone to cover the running game for him, as well it's evolution in how people are testing possible exploits is interesting to some people...to me...i'm some people...hurrah.

some people want to check the boxscore to see who won, some want to know how it went down.

  • if jeff says it, it's cool...when i say it, it's straight from the mouth of hitler.

aside from the lack of jeff touching on the insane leads runners take and lester's inability to throw if he's fielding, this is a lot of what i've said about the issue.

exploitable, needs his own personal catcher to control his shortcomings, relies on his ability to get outs along with his personal catcher keeping runners in check before things become further exploited...
