Game 13 Thread - Samardzija vs. Nolasco

Sorry, no time for a recap last night as I got caught up in that Cliff Lee vs. Matt Cain epic showdown. Anyway, Cubs lost in every way possible although they manage zero caught stealings or errors. Iowa lost 6-4, Valbeuna hit a home run and a double. Jackson and W. Castillo hit doubles as well. Jay Jackson gave up 5 in 5.2 IP. Tennessee split a doubleheader, each of the 7-inning variety. Dallas Beeler gave up an unearned run in the first game and K. Rhoderick gave up the winning run for the loss. R. Searle, C. Weathers and F. Batista combined for the shutout in the nightcap with Ty Wright providing all the offense with a solo shot. Peoria lost 5-2, Jose Rosario giving up 3 ER in 4.2 IP.

LaHair 360/448/680
Clevenger 538/538/846

The Bad

Soriano 250/279/250

Byrd 081/150/081

An item to add to the top of the bad list:

* Shit defense

There are many items I could have added to the list, but they just made me sad.

Soriano 250/279/250
But I thought he was having a good month.

I'm around, drop a comment if anyone wants to parachat

Dear Samardzija,

Welcome back.

Signed,
Earth

I honestly think he just lost concentration last game. I mean, what could possibly prepare a Cubs' starting pitcher for a 7 to 9 run lead. It's unprecedented!

Seemed like a lot of small cuts this time. Maybe I'm just seeing things through rose-colored glasses, but I still think he's a changed pitcher.

LaHair is possibly the worst baserunner ever.

tries for 3b on a single and should have been out easily if Hanley Ramirez didn't whimp out on the play.

Tv crew was just saying how awesome LaHair's baserunning is today ... Oh boy

just because it was successful, doesn't make it a good play.

after Stanton whiffed on his double, it just showed off how slow he was. Ball bounced past him and CF'er had to field it and he just made it.

Well, it was a hell of a throw to third and would have taken that type of throw and a perfect tag on the other end to get him. I think the sense that it was good base running comes from the fact that the Cubs are a shit team, they need to find ways to win, it was early in a close game, the play was in front of him, and the defense would have to make a perfect play to get him--so make the defense beat you.

agree to disagree...

Morrison made an okay throw but it was there in plenty of time and Hanley bailed on the tag. He should have just looked silly getting thrown out by plenty, but lucked out imo.

Didn't seem like all that wise a decision or calculated risk imo.

I seriously think this is Sveum's fault. LaHair was trying to steal a base on Tuesday. That was pretty ugly, too. There are some guys on your team who are very rarely going to go first to third or even effectively be the "run" part of a hit and run. LaHair is one of them. Soto is one of the others. I'm fine with the other position players running the bases aggressively.

A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.

Sure. But LaHair is like a steamboat. Sveum and the third base coach should not be treating him like he's a speedboat.

what about a speed steamboat?

A Cleveland Steamer?

That sounds way wrong Jacos!

Sounds like a good nickname for Steve Clevenger. That or "The Sleazy Cleve."

I prefer a hot Karl, but different strokes for different folks.

Barney with a bases clearing 2-out triple with an assist by Stanton.

3-2 Cubs.

nice DP turn on Bonificacio, although he looked safe at first.

naturally I have Nolasco going in 2 leagues today

Marlins play defense a lot like the Cubs.

Double for LaHair after a bunt single by Stewart.

Soto up with runners on 2nd/3rd and 1 out.

and Soto K's.

Byrd being IBB, up to Samardzija.

Samardzija does make a nice play on a Stanton squibber.

oh, did Stanton bunt? Twitter seems to think so. I wasn't paying close enough attention. Regardless, nice play by Samardzija to field and make a good throw.

No. Just a little dribbler.

Dan Murphy yesterday, Gregg Dobbs today.

4-3 Marlins.

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...

Epstein saying it's just a slow start.

Ricketts is going to blame injuries next week.

effin' Marlins

Have 2 World Series titles and no division titles.

Bonificaio steals 2b off Soto, although a good throw, he's just that good.

Ninja knocks down a grounder, Barney wisely lets Castro field it going towards the play and they get Hanley. Although he was actually safe on the replay.

man on 3rd, 1 out though

weirdness, liner off Samardzija on a drawn in infield (off his pitching hand). Gets past Castro but Bonifacio stays at 3b.

1st/3rd with 1 out, Ninja still pitching...unfortunately.

Russell up in the pen though.

Ninja K's Stanton, out after 88 pitches.

Russell vs. Dobbs.

Stewart tries to steal 2b, predictably thrown out.

Epstein talks draft and other notes.

Are the Cubs the worst team in baseball, or merely one of the worst teams?

yes?

That's what I thought.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply that the 2012 Cubs are historically bad, but this is encouraging.

"Three years after losing 119 games, the Tigers went 95-67 and made it to the 2006 World Series."

Is there a LeBron in next years draft? Like someone who can put up HOF numbers at 3b AND pitch CG shutouts every fifth day while going directly to the big league club after being drafted?

Cubs select Roy Hobbs with the 6th pick.

...even Roy Hobbs met up with Cubbery. Didn't Hobbs come up as a pitcher before getting shot by the lady in black. I remember the scene where he pitched against The Whammer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Waitkus

Other passengers on the train include sportswriter Max Mercy, Walter "The Whammer" Whambold, the leading hitter in the American League and three-time American League Most Valuable Player (based on Babe Ruth), and Harriet Bird, a beautiful but mysterious woman.
The train makes a quick stop at a carnival along the rail where The Whammer challenges Hobbs to strike him out. Hobbs does just that, much to everyone's surprise and The Whammer's humiliation. Back on the train Harriet Bird strikes up a conversation with Hobbs, who does not suspect that Bird has any sort of ulterior motive. In fact, she is a lunatic obsessed with shooting the best baseball player. Her intent was to target Whammer but after Hobbs struck him out, her attention turns to him.

Soto makes another good throw on Reyes stealing 2b, but he just beats it.

RALLY CAPS!!

Go Banana!

5 in a row, how low can they go?

Considering we're now going to pitch our 4th and 5th starters, 7 is certainly well within reach.

dear swaimy...

everyone knows by this point the team is going to be uber-aggressive. let's stop asking guys who can barely make it to their fielding position before the commercial break ends to steal and take extra bases.

sincerely,

the disgruntled uncle of good intentions

Uncle Grunt is right!

We don't know that LaHair was stealing. Probably it was a hit-and-run. If you recall, he was picked off, not thrown out by the catcher, so we don't know if the batter was swinging.

LaHair had just screwed up by not taking second on a play at the plate, so he was unusually eager to get to second.

couldn't pat hughes' partner just be his tuna sandwich?

jeez, most kids can bowl higher than byrd's batting average...

A ship in the harbor is safe

  • if they dont win at least 130 games this season they can pack it all up, turn wrigley into a concert venue, and move the damn team to san jose.

  • I see where catcher Cael Brockmeyer was promoted to Tennessee a couple of days ago, to fill a roster spot vacated by David Freitas, recently promoted to Iowa. Caratini is the other catcher at Tennessee.

  • They've already clinched a minimum winning percentage of .607 for the month, and that's only if they lose the last 2 games. If they win both, they can push that up to .679. So much for "stumbling" in May. When you're winning over 60% of your games, you're doing baseball well.

  • If the best walk-off hit possible is a solo home run in a zero-zero game--Eloy did it tonight!

(But maybe it's a grand slam when your team is down three? He didn't do that.)

Number eight for Jimenez. His team is 31-17. Yesterday they scored 17 runs against Lansing. Two weeks ago it was 15 runs against the same team. This is a nice team, South Bend. The Cubs must have had a good draft last year.

Tonight the pitchers were Sands, Brooks and Effross.

  • In all seriousness the Cubs have the fewest amount of games played in the NL which means they're gonna be facing quite the grind later on including 24 games in a row at the end of June and beginning of July so I hope he does get a few days off.

  • Good thing the Cubs have five left-handed batters in the lineup. Velasquez is just tearing thru the righties [edit - doesn't seem to faze Bryant!]

  • ERIC S: Best outing I've ever seen from Manny Rondon, and I've seen most of his outings since the Cubs got him from the Angels.

    M. Rondon is competing with six others (Dylan Cease, Bryan Hudson, Jose Paulino, Pedro Silverio, Jesus Castillo, and Erling Moreno) for a starting slot at Eugene, and (as you can probably tell from the EXST box scores)  the competition has gotten fierce over the last couple of weeks, With the exception of Moreno, the Eugene SP candidates have upped their game lately, and M. Rondon's outing yesterday was especially impressive/dominating.

  • E-MAN: Pierce Johnsion was mixing a 92-94 MPH fastball with a plus-change-up AND curve, and he threw strike-after-strike-after-strike with all three of his pitches. I believe that was the best command and pitch-efficiency I've ever seen from Johnson, who often pitches from behind in the count and issues too many walks.

Of course now he has to avoid a recurrence of the lat strain (whch he has had previously in his career) as well as all of the other miscellaneous physical problems he's had over the last three years (hamstring, quad, back, etc).
