Game 13 Thread - Samardzija vs. Nolasco

Sorry, no time for a recap last night as I got caught up in that Cliff Lee vs. Matt Cain epic showdown. Anyway, Cubs lost in every way possible although they manage zero caught stealings or errors. Iowa lost 6-4, Valbeuna hit a home run and a double. Jackson and W. Castillo hit doubles as well. Jay Jackson gave up 5 in 5.2 IP. Tennessee split a doubleheader, each of the 7-inning variety. Dallas Beeler gave up an unearned run in the first game and K. Rhoderick gave up the winning run for the loss. R. Searle, C. Weathers and F. Batista combined for the shutout in the nightcap with Ty Wright providing all the offense with a solo shot. Peoria lost 5-2, Jose Rosario giving up 3 ER in 4.2 IP.

I honestly think he just lost concentration last game. I mean, what could possibly prepare a Cubs' starting pitcher for a 7 to 9 run lead. It's unprecedented!

LaHair is possibly the worst baserunner ever.

tries for 3b on a single and should have been out easily if Hanley Ramirez didn't whimp out on the play.

just because it was successful, doesn't make it a good play.

after Stanton whiffed on his double, it just showed off how slow he was. Ball bounced past him and CF'er had to field it and he just made it.

Well, it was a hell of a throw to third and would have taken that type of throw and a perfect tag on the other end to get him. I think the sense that it was good base running comes from the fact that the Cubs are a shit team, they need to find ways to win, it was early in a close game, the play was in front of him, and the defense would have to make a perfect play to get him--so make the defense beat you.

Morrison made an okay throw but it was there in plenty of time and Hanley bailed on the tag. He should have just looked silly getting thrown out by plenty, but lucked out imo.

Didn't seem like all that wise a decision or calculated risk imo.

I seriously think this is Sveum's fault. LaHair was trying to steal a base on Tuesday. That was pretty ugly, too. There are some guys on your team who are very rarely going to go first to third or even effectively be the "run" part of a hit and run. LaHair is one of them. Soto is one of the others. I'm fine with the other position players running the bases aggressively.

Bonificaio steals 2b off Soto, although a good throw, he's just that good.

Ninja knocks down a grounder, Barney wisely lets Castro field it going towards the play and they get Hanley. Although he was actually safe on the replay.

...even Roy Hobbs met up with Cubbery. Didn't Hobbs come up as a pitcher before getting shot by the lady in black. I remember the scene where he pitched against The Whammer.

We don't know that LaHair was stealing. Probably it was a hit-and-run. If you recall, he was picked off, not thrown out by the catcher, so we don't know if the batter was swinging.

LaHair had just screwed up by not taking second on a play at the plate, so he was unusually eager to get to second.
