Cubs Rally to Edge A's at Fitch Park

Javier Baez slugged a solo home run, singled, stole a base, and scored three runs, Jeimer Candelario ripped a pair of RBI doubles, reached base on an HBP, stole a base, and scored a run, Eduardo Gonzalez singled and tripled, drove-in a run, and scored another, and Garrett Schlecht reached base four times on three walks and an RBI single, as the Cubs rallied for a run in the 8th and one in the 9th to edge the Athletics 7-6 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

The game was extended an extra half-inning so that Pete Levitt could throw a second inning.

Manny Ramirez was the DH for the A’s, and made four Plate Appearances (batting once in each of the first four innings).

Facing Tayler Scott, ManRam grounded out in the top of the 1st, popped out to 1st baseman Trevor Gretzky in the 2nd, and walked on a 3-2 pitch in the top of the 3rd, and then he grounded out 4-3 versus James Pugliese in the top of the 4th.

Scott started the game for the Cubs and did not have a good outing, allowing three runs on two hits (an RBI double and an RBI triple) and two walks in three innings of work.

Pugliese followed Scott to the mound and he was “lights-out,” tossing three no-hit shutout innings with five strikeouts. He also picked a runner off 1st base.

In EXST Cubs roster news, 2B Pierre LePage has been given his unconditional release. The 23-year old LePage was the Cubs 13th round draft pick out of the University of Connecticut in 2010, and he hit a combined 303/350/414 with 37 doubles and 19 SB in 134 minor league games (combined) at AZL Cubs, Boise, and Peoria 2010-11.

Despite hitting 375/527/562 in seven EXST games (21 PA) while rehabbing from a hamstring injury suffered at Minor League Camp in March, LePage really doesn’t have the versatility to play multiple positions, and with Logan Watkins the second-baseman at Tennessee, Ronald Torreyes and Rubi Silva sharing 2B duties at Daytona, and Zeke DeVoss firmly ensconsed at 2B in Peoria, there was just no place in the Cubs organization for LePage to go where he could get playing time.

But LePage should have no trouble scoring a starting 2B job in Independent baseball, perhaps with Bridgeport in the Atlantic League or Worcester in the Can Am League, both located in close proximity to LePage’s home in Connecticut. Players can make as much or sometimes more money playing independent ball than they can playing “A” ball for an MLB organization, but the bad part about Indy ball is that it doesn’t provide much opportunity for advancement.

It does seem they're adding more half-innings than before, though I could be wrong. I still think the team would benefit in a couple years from another minor league team. A market inefficiency being too few (innings being pitched/at bats being taken). Nobody agrees with me, but whatever.

sweet...WGN game tonight.

sweet...castro 2 out double and promptly picked off at 2nd shortly into lahero's AB.

this is "the cubs way" im familiar with.

Phil-Have you seen Bubba Starling yet? If so, would you trade Baez for him?

CHUCK: The Cubs don't play the Royals in Instructs, Minor League Camp, or EXST, so I haven't had the opportunity to see Bubba Starling yet.

Phil, what is your opinion of Trey Martin? Thanks.

Phil, what is your opinion of Trey Martin? Thanks.

=============================

HAGSAG: I would rate Trey Martin the Cubs #4 position player prospect at EXST, behind only Javier Baez, Dan Vogelbach, and Jeimer Candelario.

Martin is an outstanding defensive CF with a plus arm, and an excellent baserunner and base-stealer.

His hit tool needs some refinement and he hasn't displayed much HR power yet (he should fill-out as he matures), but I think he is probably a big league prospect.

  • Classic ending, about 12:11 AM, CST. 5 hours, 3 minutes. Both teams have bases loaded, no out situations in the last inning.

    Magic #19.

Last man on the bench, Montero gets it done.

Baez lucky to not have hurt his hand with headfirst slide on play at plate in 12th inning.

  • Everyone remember Starlin Castro dropping or misplaying just about every ball near second base that involved a tag?

Javier Baez is the opposite of that.

  • on the wild pitch thing, did they really call that a wild pitch on Jansen that Heyward scored on Friday? If so, I don't know what a passed ball is anymore.

Hopefully, the Pirates will uncork a series of 9th inning wild pitches.

@BNightengale: Former #MLB pitcher Dan Haren will be throwing to Tim Tebow tomorrow during his tryout in LA, he announced.

[email protected](dan haren): @BNightengale nope, I was offered the opportunity and declined.

@ithrow88 Oh and memo to my agent, @bvanwagenen: Pitching to Tim Tebow tomorrow DOES NOT count as getting me a real job offer.

  • the factual correction on your mistakes on your post that I barely bothered to read the first time because it had nothing to do with anything I wanted to talk about is indeed a sign of my degenerative brain condition. I appreciate the safety tip and will be looking into with extreme urgency now.

  • Fwiw, Billy Hamilton's actual WAR numbers that relate to the ones that I posted for Mike Trout are:

    • 2014: 2.5
    • 2015: 1.0
    • 2016: 2.6

But by all means #crunchsplain on the stupidity of WAR while exaggerating your points. I can't wait to read more.
