Smokies facing off versus Danny Hultzen, 0 H through 3 but walks to J. Lake and L. Watkins. Lake caught stealing though.

Scoreless through 3, Brooks Raley going for Smokies.

No hits through 4 for Hultzen.

Raley with 6 K's through 5, but gave up 2 runs.

N. Samson breaks up no-hitter after 4.1 ip

Bases loaded, 0 outs for Aramis

5-4-3 DP started by Mather. Nice.

why in the hell wasn't garza bunting on the 1st pitch with a man on 1st, 0 out, and down by 1...especially if they wanted him to finish the ab bunting...i hope someone missed a sign and it wasn't just creative managing. some of this aggressiveness is odd.

-edit-

and of course johnson follows with a double leaving barney at 3rd...

-edit-

and runners stranded, 3 outs, cubbery

my god.

matt garza just cannot throw the ball to 1st after fielding.

i cannot believe we're in year 2 of this...it's mindblowing.

...he wasn't this bad when he played on turf in the AL East

Next time Kerry Wood gets mad I wish he would throw Jeff Baker into the stands.

Wellington Castillo looking like a moran behind the plate not framing pitches, BB is all over him,

Stepped away to take care of crying newborn, so missed the last two innings. Did Garza get hurt? Or did they take him out for being at 93 pitches?

took him out, castillo was not helping him

if everything we've seen so far is an indication we're going to see a lot of mid-90 to 110 pitch starts. there's only 2 110+ pitch starts this year out of all the starters.

he probably could have gone more, but his control/stuff wasn't all that today anyway (and welly didn't help much as noted elsewhere in this thread).

Nobody f*cks with DeJesus

UNF!

scrubbies up 4-1.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, fucks with the DeJesus!!!

Grand Slam!!!

Ruh-roh, marmol...3 balls to start the inning.

Deja-Cincy-Vu all over again?

Nobody f*cks with DeJesus in RF either!

and marmol out of the game after lightly rolling his ankle (legit excuse to leave, but he doesn't look like he'll miss much time, if any).

Trainer visiting marmol, caught his cleat or something, but he's coming out. Bowden in.

marmol catches clete on mound, out with hurt leg

ARam just misses a HR, as his double hits the yellow line in CF and bounces back in...but drives in Braun after a walk.

Marmol tweaks his ankle or knee when his landing foot catches a clete on the mound. Throws a few practice pitches and gets taken out of the game.

Michael Bowden in.

Anyone know what happened to marmol? :)

TCR is the new parachat

well, this game just became a gigantic bag of dicks.

4-5, brews.

Michael Bolton gives up double clears bases- 5-4 brewers

Why should I change my name? He's the one that sucks.

Castro should have made the play in the hole to end the inning.

nice bunt, game of thrones.

Len said Marmol's injury diagnosed as a right hamstring strain.

well that's a lot worse than lightly rolling his ankle...boo.

wait, i can't tell if this is good or bad.

The Phillies purchased the contract of INF Mike Fontenot from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

CUBS TIE!!!!!!

sigh...

heh.

Has anyone mentioned that nobody fucks with DeJesus?!!!

Wow. Helluva game for Dejesus here.

Edit. That was also an incredibly awful at bat by Castro there.

not bad for a guy that came into the game in the 7th...HR, triple, 5rbi, 2r

...and that catch in RF at the wall.

J. Hamilton in the Barry Bonds home run zone. 2 more so far tonight.

STRIKE OUT, WILD PITCH, RUNNER SCORE, CASTRO SAFE AT 1st

6-5 CUBS! 2 outs, top 9. unf.

also, lol K'ing on a wild pitch...dude, wtf?

Not just that pitch but the whole at bat was terrible. I think Castro made the decision to swing at that first pitch on the way to the batters box from the on deck circle.

josh hamilton does that a lot...castro's not josh hamilton, though.

The rare run scoring strikeout to take the lead

'Bout time that mother-scratcher Axford blew a save opp against the Cubs ...

ummm...manager...training staff...players in the dugout...anyone?

anyone?

dollis hurt...hello.

this is getting really weird to watch.

he's obviously hurt/sore out there.

It's certainly puzzling.

even if he's fine...go check...or something. *shrug*

That was weird. What are coaches for, again?

HR brewers...tied @7. neat.

Oh yeah, Dolis is much better at this closing thing

are you watching this, btw, or following online?

he's obviously not 100% in his shoulder/back. it's odd he's still out there, imo.

Everyone can see he's hurt, but the pitching coach is busy shoveling sunflower seeds into his mouth.

Looks like a lower back thing to me with how stiff he looked but I'm no doctor.

Pitching with minor injuries is often how more significant injuries happen. Gotta bend that back for the good of the shoulder and elbow.

Was sort of watching, heard Bob comment about it. He was still throwing 96 so it couldn't have been too bad

his followthroughs were awful.

he's also about to pitch another inning.

WTF... why is he still in? He doesn't look right at all... after every pitch you can tell he's sore.

2nd walk to Izturis (leadoff!) ... this does not bode well

Bob sez...that was a bonehead play by Izturis, running right into Stewart's tag on a grounder to third.

Cubbery from ex-Cubs too.

ruh, roh...

KWood warming up for the bottom of the 11th.

he should see if he can find juan cruz's old smurf-blue glove in the clubhouse somewhere.

This just shows what kind of bullpen depth we've got...and why an injured Dolis is our best option.

kerry wood is showing how true that might be.

almost hbp for 3-0 count...nice.

...and a leadoff walk

"Ok, Dolis is hurt, we should take him out."
"Fine, then we'll have to bring in Wood."
"Alright, just leave in Dolis."

And Wood nearly plunks Bugeyes.

I LOVE Wood...but seriously.

i really wanna see him get out of this just to get his head straight...try again another night.

back to back suckage

where is David Patton when we need him?

Kerry's got it tonight.

/sarcasm font

At least he's consistent.

9 balls in a row to start the inning...and pitches out of it.

brewery. that don't work too well.

Lendy time?

Castillo-Castillo battery.

When isn't it?

Was Is Greinke pitching for was he pinch hitting?

Three hits for Wellington...does that cancel out all of the strikes he cost his pitchers with his shitty framing?

Is this game really still happening?

woo...carry woods!

it should be lendy time soon.

That dude is lucky awesome!

DeJesus is channeling Matt Garza with his bunting skills.

...and lendy gives up a leadoff HBP.

this game is weird.

and follows it up with a HBP.

awesome.

Setting up the triple play.

And now Bugeyes.

I do like to see Braun hit, though.

for the love of god would someone please let b.lahair pitch?

and the cubs end it with mickey mouse highschool defense blowing up in their face.

awesome...cubs lose.

odd/good game.

A brilliant defensive alignment.

Let's put our 2B at short...I can't envision that going wrong in any way.

Glad I turned off after 8th.

  • LOLLYGAGGERS!

  • You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!

  • Its too bad Warren didnt get to pitch. He would have saved us.

  • Whoa -- that Contreras play in the 8th looked too much like a "Schwarber" -- nearly crashed into the wall going full speed, with Heyward doing the same.

New rule: if you are a catcher playing LF, and find yourself sprinting after a fly ball in the gap -- stop, let the CF go after it and get ready to play it off the wall.

  • Cubs have no spark and no life. Pretty boring to watch these days.

  • I thought trips to Miami were supposed to be fun. This one sucked.

The bottom half of the bullpen now turns close games into blowout losses. Not good.

Once Fowler went to the DL, the team went into the tank. Wonder if he'll get any love this offseason? Probably not.

  • 6IP, 2ER. The last one scored because of another botched Zobrist DP turn.

And now, a bad throw by KB. Sloppy.

  • What is it with Hammel always starting well and sucking after a couple months?

The E-Man 14 hours 24 min ago view
  • Ahhh...sad. Lke a few of you here, I saw him play during the '69-'71 seasons. He was the "hot Zobrist" for the club in August/September of '69 while everyone else was fizzling out...

  • I predict: "They will play hard and if they give the same effort every day, they'll win a lot of games."

  • OK, boys -- find a way to win today.

  • There's some BA is missing too, here's all signing bonus BA doesn't have some:

    -6 Hockin $241,000 (slot price), 7 Cruz $75,000 (saved $110,00), 8 Ridlings $120,000 (saved $53,800), 9 Robinson $30,000 (saved $132,300), so far the Cubs have saved an extra $297,100

  • per Muscat...
Zobrist (2B), Hayward (CF), Bryant (3B), Rizzo, Contreras (LF), Montero, Russell, Coghlan (RF), Hammel

  • Also -- despite losing 6 of their last 10, the Cubs picked up a game on both STL and PIT during that period. Weird, given that they swept PIT and were swept by STL.

  • Also, I'd like to know if there are numbers to back up my suspicion that there are a lot more fast starts than late June romps. This seems like a time where everybody not named Willson Contreras is looking a little tired and/or banged up a bit.

For once, the Cubs got off to a fast start. Seems like I've been waiting for that for 50 years.Everybody is really gunning for this team, too. It's their playoffs.
