Or Dempster and the 1st base ump can give the runs back.

You know what would be a great idea? Sacrifice bunting with one of only two players on your team that can hit. Awesome.

and having that hitter jog to 1st rather than running after bunting would be icing on the cake.
that whole thing was a giant ball of suck.

You know it's a bad move when all the ESPN announcers agree that it's a bad idea. Further, LaHair is getting an intentional walk immediately after the Castro bunt, which is your second best hitter. ESPN then showed a graphic that against Boggs, Soriano in his career was 0-9 w/7 K's. Way to use that statistical background Sveum.

Be that as it may, the Cubs went from runners on 1st and 2nd, none out (1.573 run expectancy) and their best two hitters up to runners on 1st and 2nd, two out (0.466 run expectancy), and Soriano/Stewart coming up. If you prefer bunting with Castro we'll just agree to disagree.
Even if Castro's bunt was successful, you'd still have Soriano with the bases loaded and perfect double play situation. Oh well.

Replying to myself here, but the same run expectancy chart shows that bases loaded, one out is a 1.65 run expectancy. So maybe, just maybe, Sveum knew all this and really is a saber-inclined manager that we should all be proud of? I still would have let Castro and LaHair swing away in that situation. Hopefully we don't see that choice out of Sveum again.

if anyone is flying by blind/blanket numbers that treats castro with men on the same as a random assortment of league average with men on then they're doing it wrong.

I do not like when bad managing gets reinforced by scoring in spite of it.

I'll be lone defender of the indefensible. My guess is that Sveum was using desperate tactics to "try to make something happen". I can't figure out what other reason there could be for that kind of move.
I think it was a good move if only because it exposed Castro a bit. That jog off the bunt was inexcusable, and needs to be fixed before stardom makes him cocky.

Tulo nailed by a line drive in the leg while waiting on the top step of the dugout (he was due up 3rd).
looks like he's going to stay in though.

Justin Sellers with an amazing play catching a foul ball in the stands.
Full sprint back from third base, caught it over the shoulder basket style and then flipped over into the stands.

As of last night, wasn't the 2013 draft order: Twins, Padres, CUBS?
Thoughts on Campana
on Tue, 05/15/2012 - 8:18am Permalink
I'm starting to like this kid. I can't remember a time the Cubs have had a guy who flusters good defensive teams into making mistakes. The Cards are usually pretty good, but when Campana was on the bases they were throwing the ball around like kids in a school yard.
What I liked most was what the ESPN guys pointed out, how he stole second after missing a sign and seeing DeJesus get thrown out. When this kid says he can steal 100 bases, I am beginning to believe it. He doesn't even seem to need to be that good a hitter. Chops the ball to the shortstop and still gets on.
As his reputation grows, pitchers will try to be more careful not to walk him. If he can learn how to really, really control the plate, he could be a very interesting player.

The managing this season leaves a lot to be desired. And Im hoping that the strategy is simply that Sveum is enough of a players manager/developer of young players to get them through this season and next until a real manager is available. If Theo really believes that Dale is the guy for the next decade or more, then Im going to become an Orioles fan real soon.
But it could be worse. Could be Don Mattingly.

for a guy that likes to make fun of Campana, give him props last night for some excellent baserunning.
On the Soriano single, he recognized immediately that it was going to drop and took off.
and of course the SB on the pitch-out.
even laid down a good bunt but Freese made a great play on it.
