Cubs Win One & Tie the Other at Indian School Park

Rock Shoulders belted a two-run home run and Shawon Dunston Jr doubled twice and scored two runs, but Kentrell Hill rifled a game-tying RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th to enable the Giants to avoid defeat on Field #1, while Ian Dickson and three relievers were combining to toss a three-hit shutout as the Cubs blanked the Giants 1-0 in the other game on Field #2, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader played this morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Both games were seven-inning contests (the game on Field #1 was called after seven innings with the score tied 5-5).

Micah Gibbs continued his rehab assignment, catching the shutout on Field #2. He racked-up seven more Plate Appearances today (batting once each inning), going 2-6 with two singles and a walk, and a stolen base. He also threw out a baserunner trying to steal 2nd base. Randy Wells got blasted today at Sacramento, giving up 7 runs in 5.0 IP, 8 Hits, 3 BB. 6K. Iowa lost 9-4.

The I-Cubs offense sucked too except for Anthony Rizzo hitting his 13th HR, a 2 run shot in the first.... and a triple, going 3 for 4

Recent EXST pupil of Az Phil, Gioskar Amaya got a pinch hit double in the 8th.

"Rays manager Joe Maddon said it will be either Alex Cobb or Chris Archer taking Jeff Niemann's (leg) spot in the rotation."

take that wade davis.

dear brett lawrie...

enjoy your free time you just earned. great time of year for golf. maybe go sailing.

Half of the 50 person crowd looked stunned at Lawrie's helmet toss (old lady behind ump). The other half was enraged by his shitty call (beer tosser). Two bullshit calls in a row, but Lawrie might want to stay at home plate until the ump makes the call. Too many umps don't signal anything on a ball, then when a player takes off early they automatically call a strike. He won't deserve what he gets, the helmet took a wicked hop

He's going to get 10-20 games.

Ump should get review by league he instigated.

Both were wrong.

"Canada..they started a country and no one showed up"-Rodney Dangerfield

10-20 games easy. Horrible calls, but you can't go chucking shit in the umps general direction......Delmon Young.

"USA.......they started a county and a bunch of fucking idiots showed up." Me.

10-20 games? Holy shit that's a lot. If he gets 20 games he should get to pistol whip the ump

fwiw, Joe Torre is saying he doesn't believe Lawrie intended to hit the ump and the helmet just took an unfortunate hop. He might be spared a bit.

I'd say 7-10 after hearing that.

and the correct answer is 4.

OMG, something, justice, burn him on the spit, etc, etc...

Seems fair to me.

Ump was being a dick. It cheapens the sport that umps personalities become an issue in the game.

Boy, do I miss Harry Wendelstedt and Tom Gorman. Some of these clowns today make Bruce Froemming look like Bill Klemm.

Or, maybe you miss the guys who were supervising those umps. This kind of behavior is really pretty easily stopped. Been going on for a few years, at least.

Look to their leader Joe West

Interesting. Thanks for the link.

angels fire mickey hatcher (hitting coach)...yeah, that'll fix pujols.

*cough*internal politics*cough*

mickey will find work. i seriously cannot imagine mike s. wanted this...they're great friends.

Whipping gloves at teammates and now getting guys fired, Albert showing what a great guy he is.

If Albert Pujol's previous ability to hit was a result of his batting coach in St. Louis, somebody would be paying that guy $20 million a year to leave St. Louis. Why anybody should feel the need to be paid to leave St. Louis is for another thread.

His success is obviously due to hitting coaches such as the famous St. Louis hitting coach, Coach Growth Hormone.

Too bad that $250M+ contract is guaranteed. If he was found to have used HGH I wonder if the Angels have any recourse of it they just should have known better (buyer beware)

They'd be idiots not to include that in their contract, but who knows? I'd love to believe these owners would stop doing these idiotic long contracts, but they won't. But seriously, they may as well just give these guys the team for these amounts of money. It doesn't seem economically sustainable.

I guess I just assumed drug clauses like that weren't allowed by the CBA/union.

That could be. I have no idea.

It seems like too dramatic a drop off for that. He was too good a pure hitter to simply say it was HGH. But it was a funny joke.

My bet is something is wrong with his back, or something. That was my concern when there was so much press talk about the Cubs getting him on an extended contract. I say press talk, not Theo talk. He seemed to occasionally suffer from a bad back, which is going to eventually affect your swing. In the case of Pujols, that old truism that sometimes that it's the moves you DON'T make that are the best moves really hits home.

AZ Phil, what do you see the Boise roster looking like by their opening day?

From Rotoworld

Kyle Kendrick will start in place of Vance Worley (elbow) Wednesday night against the Cubs.
Worley was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with right elbow inflammation and will miss at least his next couple of turns in the starting rotation. Kendrick has an ugly 7.32 ERA and 12/9 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings this season and can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Too late to claim him off FA to start for tonight's game... :(

"Friendly at the Confines"

Italy vs. Poland club soccer teams will play in July at Wrigley

Junior Lake, SS/3B, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 3-for-5, 2B, R, 3 RBI, K. On base 19 times in his first nine games; .344/.475/.594 overall.

Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 3-for-4, 3B, HR (13), R, 2 RBI, K. Six home runs in last eight games and up to .359/.420/.704 overall; it's getting close to the time for the Cubs to find a way to get him in the lineup.

Gerardo Concepcion, LHP, Cubs (Low-A Peoria): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K. First good start lowers ERA to 8.10. Commanding an upper 80s fastball very well.

Not even baseball related....

Google announces big change to how search results are delivered, says new search tool will think more like a human.

WTF ARE THEY THINKING?????????????????????

I've seen the Matrix and Terminator to know how this ends...

So Google search results will be a sarcastic asshole?

That would be kind of cool, actually.

If it's for guys it's just going to go to porn sites.

Then wtf am I going to do with my bookmarks?

Glad I bought my Skynet stock earlier this year.

@BearReport Per @mikecwright the #Bears are moving Chris Williams back to left tackle ...

Doesn't matter, he'll get hurt 12 minutes into training camp anyway

After a pre-snap penalty.

Guess Cabrini is not ready.

Does it say if Williams' helmet will come with siren on it to go off to warn Cutler?

I think CW is going to be the third Tackle, not a starter

How close did Berkman come to signing with the Cubs?

“It would have been closer if we actually had the meeting,” he said. “I signed with the Cardinals and Jim was flying down to (Houston) to go to dinner (with me).

“It was funny because when he was at the airport, the Cardinals and I were still very far apart. And then it was like as he got on the airplane, I got a call from St. Louis and they doubled the offer. I was like, ‘All right, that’s where I wanted to play.’”

Berkman still enjoyed a night out and ended up going to dinner with Hendry, a very entertaining personality. Recruiting players to Chicago isn’t that difficult. The Cubs are taken care of around the city and the day games open up your nights.

From Rotoworld:

Lendy Castillo has been diagnosed with a moderate groin strain and may be placed on the disabled list. The Cubs have flown in Scott Maine just in case Castillo's groin shows no improvement over the next several hours. The Rule 5 Draft pick has posted a rough 7.04 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 7 2/3 innings this season.

moderate groin strain will take 2 months to heal at least including rehab.

And then there's the obligatory injury resulting from coming back after the long rehab.

he'll have to come back at some point, later in the season, the better as you can bury him even farther when rosters expand.

But as tim815 noted, still has a little over half his obligation to go before Cubs own his rights completely.

Games after September 1 don't count toward the 90. I think Bowden and Castillo might play seventh man in the pen tag-team.

ah thanks, makes sense.

mid-July then he should be back.

I think he'll be back by early-June. Then, Bowden will evelop shin splints or turf toe. Castillo still has to get his 90 days in.

TIM: Unless the rule was changed in the new CBA (and I haven't seen anything anywhere to indicate it was), MLB Service Time acrued after September 1st DOES count toward the 90 days needed to satisfy Rule 5 obligations.

Wow. Thanks.

Lendy Castillo has accrued 42 days of MLB Service Time so far (MLB Service Time started to accrue beginning with MLB Opening Day on 4/4), and if he were to go on the DL today and stay there until rosters expand on September, he'll pick-up another 33 days from September 1st through the last day of the MLB regular season on 10/3, for a total of 75 days.

He needs 90 days for the Rule 5 restrictions to be removed, so if he comes up short at the end of the 2012 MLB regular season, he would remain a Rule 5 player into the 2013 season, but would only have to spend 15 days on the Cubs MLB 25-man roster at the beginning of next season, and then the Rule 5 restrictions would be removed and he could be optioned to the minors in mid-April.

Also, if he were to be placed on the DL today he could be sent to Fitch Park to throw in weekly "sim" games, before going on a 30-day minor league rehab assignment at Daytona in August prior to being reinstated fromn the DL on September 1st.

The Cubs should not even think twice about putting Lendy Castillo on the DL.

Will today count as one toward the 90 or not? Probably not. I think 41 down, 49 to go.

Signed: RHP Mike MacDougal (released by Dodgers), C Brian Esposito (released by Reds)
Recalled: RHP Casey Coleman
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Brad Zapenas, SS Jonathan Mota
Reinstated from DL: RHP Ben Wells

  • May the best team win, and subsequently humiliate the Cardinals.

  • I love arriving here first thing in the morning, adding a few moronic posts (moranic for any Cardinals fans who may be trolling), and reading the sage posts of all you guys. Most knowledgeable fans on any forum, by far. So post like crazy today and help give TCR some visibility!

I told my wife last night that I'm going to need a support system for tonight's game. Tonight is going to be a lot harder on me than it is going to be on these rookie bad asses.

  • James Russell elected free agency.

  • based on what SF has been doing every other year lately, getting access to the postseason playoffs seems to be what's important. bring on dat short series!

that said, skipping the sudden death 1-game WC would be nice from here on out.

  • I know what you are saying, but I feel compelled to point out that there's no such thing as luck, curses, etc. The Cubs this year have as good as a chance as the Pirates to move on to the next round. If the Cubs proceed to the next round or not tomorrow, it will not be because of luck, but because one team outlasted the other. When/if the Cubs are lucky enough to make it to the league series, that's where they may find their biggest challenge. The Dodgers have a good, deep pitching staff.

  • debuting the new format 1 game "sudden death" WC matchup at yankee stadium does a perfect job of showing the intense emotion and drama this game can be.

that said, i'm ready to not see yankee stadium or hear fans at yankee stadium for another 5 and 1/2 months. at least i don't have to sit through the braves with their "tommy hawk chawp" this postseason.

  • i'd like to know why the internet radio feed of the game (which is always delayed by a few seconds at best) is almost a minute faster than the ESPN cable TV coverage. wtf?

  • i dont know what order they'll be in, but i pretty much expect fowler/schwarb/rizzo/bryant/montero/castro/lastella/arrieta. any change at all (aside from the first 4 guys) wouldn't shock me, though. coghlan is still a wildcard in the lineup joe could always march d.ross out there with very slow arrieta pitching.

  • Yup. Have to agree. Baseball, like golf, certainly has that psych component for the player. There is no real reason why a fielding position should affect a batting average. The Cubs are 106 years over due for a little luck. Don't you guys think so? Maybe the rookies can bring some dumb luck on.

  • probably stacking capable lefties vs cole while keeping the "hot" castro in the game. fwiw, he's 1-6 lifetime with 0 bb/k vs cole (double).

i chalk bryant's issues at the plate while playing OF up to coincidence so far.

  • I will call your dead horse, "Trigger".

In one game, when anything is possble, I am glad that Joe Maddon is our Manager.

He knows the stats better than all of us. It would seem, IF La Stella gets the start at 3B, it will be only up to the point that they were to get the lead (crosses fingers). From everything I have read, the game will be managed like a hoops game: offense/defense. So expect La Stella to be out of the game by the 5th. This team is incredibly deep which is so surprising. We never woulda thunk it.

  • i don't know what their roster plans are, but j.herrera is out there practicing with the team.

i can't imagine him making any roster, though. dude had 4 PA the entire month of sept. him being a good dude to be around while keeping the clubhouse loose seems to be his main role at this point.

  • I know it's my own personal dead horse to beat --but Bryant has been a lousy hitter when playing the OF this year. Given that it's his first playoff game, I really hope they keep him in his natural position and don't mess with his routine.

Lousy as in 8-for-45 with one XBH and no HR. Small sample and all that -- but why take the chance?

  • hard to tell what's up given they'll probably want to stack as many good lefties into the lineup as possible.

castro being a bit hot doesn't help things. if he was still cool they'd probably stick la stella at 2nd and call it a day.

  • Madden won't announce lineups but Stella is practicing at 3rd and Bryant in LF today. I'd rather see Bryant at 3rd but I guess Stella has been hotter than Coghlan.

/edit. Though I guess they could be practicing this with the idea Stella would come in as a PH then double switch him to 3rd base and Bryant to LF. Hope that's the plan instead

  • I really like the sound of that idea about expanding the AFL to ten teams. Each org. gets to field more players.
They should do that anyway, regardless of Adv. Instructs.
