Cubs & Giants Leave Things Tied at Indian School Park

Rock Shoulders drilled an RBI double and scored a run to highlight a two-run Cub 1st inning, and Rob Whitenack (2011 TJS rehab) threw five innings (60 pitches) of one-run ball, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Indian School Park Field #4 in Scottsdale, AZ.

The game was called after nine innings with the scored tied 2-2.

Over his last five games, Shoulders is hitting 333/444/733, with three doubles and a HR, three walks, and six RBI. He has also struck out seven times and grounded into a DP over that five-game span, but it's still his best multi-game stretch as a pro.

In EXST Cubs roster news, catcher Micah Gibbs has completed his Extended Spring Training rehab assignment and is headed for Daytona. In five EXST games (29 PA), Gibbs went 5-20 with nine walks. He also struck out twice, stole two bases, and scored six runs. He threw out one base-stealer (33% CS).

Time for Volstad to go figure it out in Des Moines (sorry to be foisting him upon you, Mike Wellman). Unfortunately, not many starters with MLB experience throwing well down there--maybe bring Travis Wood back?

I'll be glad to see Volstad moved to long relief since he's been almost a sure loss for both the Marlins in '11 and Cubs in '12... I'm thinking Travis Wood has more upside than Coleman as a starter. Time to start shuffling the deck. I'm hoping that Blake Parker gets off to a good start, the bullpen could use a boost.

The I-Cubs beat the Salt Lake City Bees, 7-5. Seems like a nice outing for Travis Wood: 7IP, 2 Runs, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR. Manny Corpas gave up 3 runs in the 9th to make the game closer than it really was. Rizzo with a 2 run HR (#14), avg at .359; BJax batting 6th had 3 hits including a triple and a HR (#4) although his avg is only .241. Josh Vitters also had a HR (#4).

Phil, Is there any way you can update us on Javier Baez's stats thus far? Thanks so much!

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.
