The team psychologist, Dr. Marc Strickland, was involved in the workouts wearing Cubs' sweats, observing Garza's throws from a few feet away with his arms crossed.
When asked if Garza'a throwing problem was "mental" on Wednesday, Sveum replied: "I'm not a psychologist."

Love it. "I don't want to answer the question 'is the problem mental?' so I'll answer a totally different question, instead."

Any idea what kind of injury it is (whether serious or not)? Cubs low on catching depth, though I think Clevenger is supposed to be back in a week or so.

Time for Volstad to go figure it out in Des Moines (sorry to be foisting him upon you, Mike Wellman). Unfortunately, not many starters with MLB experience throwing well down there--maybe bring Travis Wood back?

him or Casey Coleman.

Not watching the game - stuck with game day - Did Volstadt leave so early cuz he got shelled again? Or did he get hurt?
EDIT: Volstad. But he looks like a Volstadt.

mega-shelled. it was all downhill after the h.pence K in the 1st.
it was all walks, deep counts, and singles...but too many of all of them.

Too bad. I had some mild hope for the guy. He can go to the minors and join the other guy who we gave up a good pitcher for. Not that Z hadn't worn out his welcome. But the two can commiserate about the lousy return they've given TheoCorp so far.

he's got awesome stuff and isn't giving up the longball as much, but the hits are productive and the walks aren't helping things.
it's not getting any better so far this year. boo-hiss.

I'll be glad to see Volstad moved to long relief since he's been almost a sure loss for both the Marlins in '11 and Cubs in '12... I'm thinking Travis Wood has more upside than Coleman as a starter. Time to start shuffling the deck. I'm hoping that Blake Parker gets off to a good start, the bullpen could use a boost.

Blake Parker's wearing Koyie Hill's uniform number (55). Excellent, Probably adds 5mph to his fastball.

The I-Cubs beat the Salt Lake City Bees, 7-5.
Seems like a nice outing for Travis Wood: 7IP, 2 Runs, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR. Manny Corpas gave up 3 runs in the 9th to make the game closer than it really was.
Rizzo with a 2 run HR (#14), avg at .359; BJax batting 6th had 3 hits including a triple and a HR (#4) although his avg is only .241. Josh Vitters also had a HR (#4).
