Game 48 Thread - T. Wood vs. Suppan

The face of Joe Mather batting third will forever haunt my nightmares of the 2012 Cubs.

Padres Cubs
*Venable, CF
*DeJesus, RF
Denorfia, RF
Castro, SS
*Alonso, 1B
Mather, CF
Quentin, LF
*LaHair, 1B
#Headley, 3B
Soriano, LF
Hundley, C
*Stewart, 3B
#Cabrera, 2B
Barney, 2B
#Parrino, SS
*Lalli, C
Suppan, P
Wood, P

What's more amazing, that the Cubs have lost 12 straight or that even though they've lost 12 straight, they're only tied for the worst record in baseball with the Twins? On that note, the Padres are tied in the loss column with the Cubs, but they can legitamely blame a serious injury bug for their woes, one of which is back today in the name of Carlos Quentin. So it's a bit of an early season match-up for the dubious top spot in the draft, although there's way too much baseball left this season to put much meaning on it.

Fun facts: Cubs team record for losses in a row is 14, the modern day record is 23 by the 1961 Phillies, although a few pre-19th century teams beat that (I believe 26 is the actual record).

Theo and Jed spoke on the losing streak and other such matters.

“We’re also very open to making moves,” Hoyer said. “A lot of our conversations are what we can do to shake things up. What we can do to change the roster a little bit. We’ll keep looking at those things. We don’t have the most flexible roster in the world because of some players’ options and situations."

And the draft...

“We don’t have a ton of arms in the minor leagues,” Hoyer said. “I think the best organizations are the ones that are littered with power arms. Some guys will become starters, some guys relievers, but the best bullpens are built internally, and the more we can add arms through the draft, the better, and I think that will be the focus, not just in 2012 but in every year. “

Finally, Carlos Marmol has been activated from the disabled list and Rafael Dolis has been optioned, from closer to Triple A in the span of 2 days.

Down 1-0 in the first

Even with a 25 mph wind out to center it seems insurmountable.

Nothing is insurmountable vs soup-can, 2-1 on a deJesus triple, Castro single, stolen base, sac by Mather, RBI go by LaHair

sac by Mather

lulz.

First At Bat:

Line drive single to right, thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch it.

I don't know what it is more interesting. Watching Soriano tie the game in Chicago with an RBI double, or checking in on the minor league box scores. Hope is a four letter word you know!

terrible bounce on that Stewart error fwiw.

6 homers through top 6...dat wind.

make that 7 into the bottom 6th.

soriano (6hr in last 13 games) gives the cubs a 1 run lead (7-8)...that would be a homer without the wind. epic.

make that 8 into the bottom 7th.

7-10, castro 2r homer (2hr the past 2 days, 4 total)

Chris Sale with 10 K's through 4.1 IP, decent pitch count too

11 K through 5, but down 1-0.

7.1 ip, 15k, 115 pitches and the win for Sale

not bad for their closer

Ted Roosevelt Lilly goes on the Dodgers DL with left shoulder inflammation.

I suppose he will need his knee scoped. Some things don't change.

May 28th...2012...still not turning double plays.

sigh. the "silent" defensive knock on this middle IF.

I thought it was a good decision to not throw it to 1st. There was no way Jeter could make that play!

if they'd charge the ball more rather than waiting for it to skip to their gloves they'd get more ops.

they both do a bunch of little things that leads to DPs not being made. barney is technically sound, but it's slow going through motions. both of them wait on the ball a bit too much only to end up not making the attempt or being late (or throwing it away...castro...).

I don't doubt your point.

I like the small improvement in Castro's consistency over the last month or so. He still doesn't look natural at SS and probably never will. He's natural instincts look best fit for outfield.

castro's ranging is getting a hell of a lot better deep/wide, imo...not that it was too slack to begin with, but he's really making some wide/deep plays happen. that arm, though...hope he finds more accuracy.

That's what I'm saying. I suppose I understand that Castro has more value as a SS because his arm is strong, but it's not really all too accurate. In another time and place I wouldn't have minded seeing them flip sides. Now, I'm just ready to let it go.

CUBS WIN!

"The Chicago losing streak reaches 12, one shy of the all-time Cub record -- before Fergie Jenkins snaps the string by blanking the Cardinals five to nothing."

Just a little Jack Brickhouse audio flashback for you guys. Anybody remember this?

always nice that he actually tries to honestly answer questions. Does mention that he wanted to give Zastr? a chance in a meaningful spot rather than a mop-up role.

  • from Muskat:

#Cubs Maddon: "I'm not going to make up an excuse for why I did what I did. It has nothing to do with lack of confidence" ... "It was the right thing to do today based on what I saw, what their lineup looked like and Rob Z.'s availability." #Cubs

Hammel not particularly understanding of getting pulled out...as he should. Be curious what Maddon had to say. All I can think of is is keeping arms fresh and maybe wanting to see if Zastr? is worth considering for the playoffs and how he'd do against the Dodgers.

  • great defense

Heyward, Russell, Baez, Bryant, Ross in particular...although Bryant's a bit hard to judge with all the positions.

Fowler and Rizzo in the top half of the NL for their positions as well (per fangraphs)...Zobrist right at the halfway cutoff for 2b in the NL.

I'm sure some luck is involved too, but the Cubs and Maddon knew what they were doing.

  • If all the starters have FIP > ERA, is that luck or good defense?

  • #Cubs plummet to 19-5 in August.

    Fun with FIP

    • J. Hammel   3.07 ERA/4.27 FIP (3.68 FIP last year)
    • J. Arrieta     2.62 ERA/3.05 FIP (2.35 FIP last year)
    • J. Lester     2.81 ERA/3.67 FIP (2.92 FIP last year)
    • K. Hendricks  2.19 ERA/3.37 FIP (3.36 FIP last year)
    • J. Lackey     3.41 ERA/3.72 FIP (3.57 FIP last year with Cards)

he's great when his control is "on"...problem is it's rarely "on" consistently. he could vault up the cubs prospect list if he ever gets better with that aspect of his game.

  • JD's take was just trying to get in a lefty to better deal with mostly lefty Dodgers lineup.

My second thought was what you came up with. My first thought was he was trying to light a fire under Hammel.

  • Maybe he was trying to spare him another brutal road start? NY, Colorado...

  • joe got a pitcher up for hammel at nearly the 1st sign of trouble in the 3rd...pulled after 2.1

not injured and though it wasn't his day so far he wasn't looking like a pure disaster.

really short leash on him. zastryznzryzryny in.

  • Russell and Soler can attest that Urias has a pretty good curve/slider - two big strikeouts looking to get out of that jam in the first.
