Fun facts: If Dempster does not win today, it'll be his 18th straight start without a win, a feat not done by a Cub pitcher since 1991-1992.

wait for it...

Danny Jackson.

I have to say, Shark has really impressed. I notice he's 16th in MLB in pVORP. I'm especially surprised by his consistency - after those two tough starts in mid-April he has had seven excellent starts in a row, six of them quality starts.

He has been quite good, against some decent offenses as well.

Innings/ER/offensive rank
Nats (8.2/1/13th)
Cards (5/5/1st)
Marlins (3.2/5/12th)
Cards (6.2/0/1st)
Reds (7.2/1/11th)
Braves (7/1/2nd)
Brewers (5/1/6th)
White Sox (7.1/3/4th in AL)
Houston (6/2/10th)
Padres (7/3/15th)

He's on sports radio alot around here.

Goofy kid, in the good way.

did someone leave t.campana under a hotel bed on the last road trip?

Joltin' Joe Mather has more power...of course he'll be 30 in July...not so much a building block as hopefully a good reserve player.

it's not like i think campy is the future...or mather is pure's just been a while for campy playing...kinda odd.

please stop using Q-Ball's nicknames for players....

it's atrocious.

how about i just call them "loser #uniformnumber"

Sean is the new Campy, anyway.

Agreed. I think that it sucks that those are the choices right now for CF...but I like seeing Campana in there

did they have a shift on Amarista?

Stewart was practically at shortstop and Barney couldn't get over to cover (or just missed it).

Bud Black goofiness...

Barney steals on an 0-2 count (ended up being a wild pitch so he would have taken 2nd anyway).

1-2 count on Clevenger and decides to go after him instead of intentional walk.

Clevenger singles in the run.

of course Dempster then singles.

tie game.

Quentin seems healed.

2nd HR of the day, opposite field shot for Quentin.

6-3 Padres.

Off his own face...that was awesome.

“It's just one of those things where (Campana) didn't do anything to lose his job,” Sveum said. “He was kind of more of a victim of doing a good job but the offense not scoring runs so I thought put somebody in there that might juice the team with a home run or a three-run homer or two-run double, something like that. Unfortunately for Camp, like I told him, he's just a victim.”

Rob G. it should be Mather at 3B and Campana in CF. Sveum is right when he says try someone who can provide a little slugging, but he's replaced the wrong player. Campana wasn't the problem. LaHair was figured out, Stewart's bat slowed down, Castro forced everything, and we didn't have a catcher. Mather did deserve a shot at sometime. His at bats were impressive. So, put him at 3B for a while. He looks pretty comfortable over there. Better than Baker. That would have taken away a lefty bat in the lineup. We still would have had DeJesus, LaHair, and Campana instead of Stewart or Baker. Not like this would make the lineup .500 worthy, but it sounds better to me.

Stewart isn't the problem either, he has an .800 OPS in May which is what people should be expecting.

There's no great options or anything, but Campana had slowed down significantly since his hot start, worst OPS among the regulars. His OBP wasn't too great either if you want to discount his slugging entirely.

267/323/333 in May with 14 K in 60 AB's, 6 R, 5 BB

Stewart 238/333/463 in May with 13 K, 11 R, 8 BB in 67 AB's

Campana's nifty when he gets on-base and is getting lucky, but crying over him starting is silly. The team sucked with him and they suck without him in the lineup. His future is the bench, might as well get use to it.

Not that I'm advocating Mather either, cause his future is even dimmer. But neither is worth caring about who starts.

Hey Rob, do you still have an Amazon book link? I'm wanting to buy Kerry Wood's book...

Yeah, thanks...I was referring to Rob's comment below. Wanted to give money to two unfortunates...sad kids and TCR.

[edit] And, Ha, I just saw what you were linking too. I suppose it could have been worse:)

no, the Amazon affiliate thing wasn't really working for us. But thanks for thinking about us.

Can you keep that Noise Bot ad on the right forever? Thanks.

I'd be happy if the Zazzle ad with soccer ball boobs would go away. Clearly we need more bobos, but that's not the answer.

I like the hot hipster chick in tidy whiteys and a meh t-shirt ad.

It almost makes me click on it every time I see it
And they're "tighty" (sorry - spelling nazi at it again)

is that the same ad that Tito is referring to?

I've seen a Noise Bot one with a cute girl and a "I pooped today" T-shirt. High brow stuff.

I've seen the "Meh" T-shirt ad as well, not sure if that's Noise Bot, but I presume it is. Can't be that many T-shirt companies advertising.

I've been staring at Kate Beckinsale in her underwear for a month, so I'm not that impressed. :)

"Meh" is Snorg Tees or something like that.

Intentional Talk on MLBN does a piece called "Hawk's Unbiased Call of the Day"

It funny. Yup.

He makes watching a Sox game virtually un-watchable unless you mute the volume. I'm looking for a TV that leaves Stone's commentary on the volume but mutes Harrelson.

he's a weird guy.

i wish he'd be more like his "real" self...the guy that's casual and has a ton of funny stories (and the skills to tell them attentively).

when you put him behind a mic at a live game he turns into an angry drunk version of ron santo.

Happened today.

Vin Scully he is not.

Doubles Clevenger strikes again.

4-3 Padres.

it's time to work the hell out of the pen again...dumpster gone in the 5th.

SD showing why they're almost/as bad as the cubs.

We're #2! We're #2!

My friend in Columbus, GA said that the sports radio guys down there are all talking about Dempster to the Braves.

Food for thought.

presuming R. Delgado is the one that would lose his rotation spot, I'd happily have the Cubs take him off their hands in return.

Wonder if Minor would be realistic?

didn't notice he's been even worse than Delgado...either one would be great.

or give them Garza and Dempster and get Teheran, Minor and Delgado. :)

Jim Callis‏@jimcallisBA

Heard that #Cubs are working out Correa and Fried today. Not sure Correa makes it to them

His "peeps" take giving "A Shout Out", to new extremes on this kid's HR in PR.

Sweeping the Cubs!

from what little I know of these players, my current hope is Zimmer magically falls to them at #6 and they take Giolito with a supplemental pick and pay the tax since they saved some major league payroll money this year.

Obviously w/o paying him too much or the rest of their first 10 round picks that it would cost them a draft pick.

Castro with some awesome hustle to tie the game.

I know it's trendy to trash on former Cubs prospects once they leave the system, but Cashner has the most hittable 100mph fastball since Billy Koch.

he doesn't have a real out pitch.

he doesn't throw his fastball for an out pitch. it's kinda hard to set up a 90mph "circle change" with nothing but a fastball even if it is 100mph when they both don't have much movement on them.

Nice DP by Barney and Castro in 9th.

- T. Campana ran for R. Johnson
- T. Campana stole second
- T. Campana stole third

dat speed. screw a 100mph fastball pitcher.

The key was Johnson getting on-base for him.

bringing on the righty to face a 100mph righty leaving campy on the bench was totally the best decision. =p

johnson is having a decent season this year vs righties at least.

Not letting Campana hit is always the best decision.

i don't mind using the guy as bench/pinch-running, but the guy has been riding pine like a mofo and missing PH spots the past couple weeks that seem ideal.

he does his damage when he's on base, whether it's him or someone else that gets him there.

My fantasy teams could use a win for Russell. Let's do it.

- C. Denorfia in right field
- W. Venable in right field
- W. Venable in right field
- C. Maybin in center field
- C. Denorfia in left field
- A. Amarista at third
- A. Parrino at second
- D. Thayer relieved A. Cashner

lulz, gameday.

Barney walk-off HR.

Did anybody notice that the same guy who caught Quentin's first home run and chucked it back on the field also caught Barney's walk-off dinger? He was in the first row of the left-center field bleachers, wearing a red long sleeved shirt (with a fielder's glove) and there was a girl in a red-and-white striped "Where's Waldo" shirt sitting immediately to his left. Caught both taters on the fly. What a great day at the ball park for him!

  • BLOCK: Of course any advantage is an advantage. An MLB, NBA, or NHL team getting the extra game at home in a seven game series is an advantage, I just don't think it is enough of an advantage for winning a division and/or having the best record in a conference or league over the course of an 82-game season (NBA and NHL) or 162 game series (MLB).

  • TEX takes the opening game from TOR (@TOR) 5-3.

TOR lost bautista + donaldson in-game due to injuries...TEX lost beltre...dunno if any will be lingering issues leading to missed games.

  • Ride the Kid Magic! Schwarber hadn't homered in a long time before last night.

  • Greg Maddux was 8-18 in his rookie season. Kyle has the 8 wins down pat.

    Think Baby Maddux.

Prof. Harold Hill's THINK system at work.

Kyle is on the far left.

  • I support this. Hendricks has not only looked better lately but seems to start struggling after a few innings which is better than the 1st in the playoffs.

  • Just tweeted via Jesse Rogers: Hendricks starting Game 2. Wow. Just wow.

  • That was good!

  • Well said. On one hand, I thought the HBP was a bad baseball play -- down 4 runs, put a runner on for a red-hot Fowler. On the other hand, they needed to do something -- I hadn't thought about the warning/pitching inside point. Is Hurdle that smart? He does not strike me that way. By the way -- not clear which fan base you are referring to in your "first" 3rd point.

  • My unsolicited opinions on topics covered in this thread:
    1. I hate the fact that after 162 games, a team could be out after 1 game. However, I think the system is pretty close to perfect right now. 2 of 3 isn't feasible unless they shorten the regular season, and it ices the division winners for way too long. This creates excitement, and rewards the division winners.

  • Personally, I think the game could have had a very different look had the Pirates held onto the ball and tagged Fowler out on the steal in the first. Cole was clearly frazzled, but if they took that runner off the base, it could have relaxed him a lot.

  • Football games are played once a week. There are 16 games a year. I'm not even remotely following at all how you can compare the two leagues and playoff systems. It is physically impossible to play a home and away series. The idea of not having any road games in baseball playoffs is certainly a head scratcher.

How is not having the first and last game at home a benefit for the division winners and team with the best record? How is it not an incentive to win the division when a WC team has to blow their top pitcher?

    Call me lost.

  • Two 97+ win teams in a do-or-die, great bullpens, overpowering starters, plenty of pop--hard to believe that game wouldn't be tense. A 4-0 lead is not a blowout, especially in that situation and with the Cubs' young bullpen. Not only would a defensive play here or there make a difference, but you get the win there also on the home plate umps strike zone (generous strike calls for Arrieta, including a couple Ks), and on Schwarber sitting on the right pitch at the right time.

  • Unbeleivable Dodgers:
I just noticed the Dodger's payroll today. It is just absurd. $300,000,000+!!
Here is where just some of their money is for 2015:

    Some "Highlights"
    Carl Crawford $20MM
    Brandon McCarthy $17MM
    Bronson Arroyo $3.5MM
    Darwin B $2.2MM
    Dan Haren $10MM
    Matt Kemp $18MM
    Brian Wilson $10MM
    Ryan Webb $2.2MM
    Dee Gordon $2.5MM

  • So I think tomorrow will be the most important test of how far we can go. We can win it all with two pitchers since Arietta has shown he can carry over his success to the post season. If Lester can be dominant also then I think we can go far no matter how Hendricks or Hammel do.

And in terms of pitching just went through to see how we could maximize Lester and Arietta and came up with this (Lester would be going on 4 days rest three times and Arietta twice):

  • i still can't believe that crawford contract (7/142). all that loot and years for a LF'r who's entire hitting game revolves around his legs and line-drive power. those triples that raised his value are deceptive as hell to his true power, but it helped him get paid.

there's also pause about a guy who's ob% is almost totally driven by hits rather than walks. BOS got lucky unloading that crap deal.

  • I think the Cubs take Berry and Soler off playoff roster and add Hammel & Ramirez. Believe Maddon will find Denorfia & Jackson defense too hard to lose.
