Diamondbacks & Cubs Split, Man

RHP James Pugliese threw four innings of two-hit shutout ball with five strikeouts and Marco Hernandez and Wilson Contreras collected consecutive two-out RBI singles to cap a three-run 5th, leading one squad of Cubs to a 4-1 victory over one squad of Diamondbacks on Field #3, and Yosbel Gutierrez laced an inside-the-park two-run home run to spark the other squad of D’backs to a 5-3 victory over the other squad of Cubs on Field #2, in a Cactus League Extended Spring training doubleheader played this morning at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.


Both games were seven-inning affairs.


Stephen Drew (2011 broken ankle rehab) accounted for the Diamondbacks lone run on Field #3, with a line-drive RBI single to CF in the top of the 7th.


In EXST Cubs roster news, catcher Sergio Burruel has been promoted to Peoria, and RHP Daniel Adrian, RHP Javier Castro, LHP Augusto Colina, RHP Jorge Diaz, RHP Loiger Padron, C Wilfredo Petit, and OF Kevin Encarnacion have been sent back to the Dominican Academy and will be asigned to one of the two Cubs affiliates in the Dominican Summer League (DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2). DSL Opening Day is tomorrow.

It wasn’t a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game so the stats don’t count, but the EXST Cubs did play a seven-inning intra-squad game Thursday morning (5/31).

RHP Jose Arias threw five innings of one-hit shutout ball with five strikeouts for one of the squads, and RHP Amaury Paulino saw his first game action of 2012 for the other squad, throwing three innings and allowing one run on three hits (including two triples), but with five strikeouts.

The only run of the game was driven-in by Brian Inoa, who roped a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the 5th to score Trevor Gretzky, who had reached base on a triple with one out.

the home plate ump in the t.smokies game has to be legally blind.

his zone is so small stuff falling squarely on the corners (not just a piece of the edge) are being called for balls.

oddly, or not, t.mcnutt is having one of his best games of the season through 5ip. he should have (and the opposing pitcher) a few more Ks, though. it's kinda ruining the game because guys are not swinging at stuff they normally would offer at.

Vitters really isn't turning anything around. He is currently developing as a LH pinch hitter because thats about the only thing he is decent against.

a .273 average and a .317 OBP against rhp just isn't going to cut it. He is still a massive bust for a 2007 first round pick.

Not sure I fully agree. I understand you see him now, but I am not sure the stats uphold your views.

Vitters has regularly been moved up quickly at levels when he showed progress. After each promotion, he struggled for a bit, then became more consistent. He is not yet 23 and is starting to show good life at AAA...in the last ten games, he is .371/.436/.743, with 4 hrs and a double in 35 AB (and 3 BB and only 2 K).

Will he fully develop enough power? Who knows...but I do think he will become someone who hits .280-.300 with 15-20 home runs at the MLB level. As for your LHP pinch hitter, his slugging is better against lefties (as is often true for right handed hitters), but in 2012 he hits .286 against lefties and .273 against righties. Doesn't sound like someone to write off as a match-up only player.

Vitters is putting up better numbers than Brett Jackson right now, and Jackson is about 13 months older than Vitters. Is Jackson a bust as well? Or does he get different treatment because he was drafted out of college? In fact, Vitters is the youngest player on the Iowa Cubs....does this mean that other than Rizzo (who is about 3 weeks older than Vitters), nobody on Iowa will be a success because they haven't dominated yet?

I am rather confused at writing off someone who is in their 22-23 year old season at AAA and doing pretty well.

LaHair has till the end of June to save his entire career. After that point he is bench player at best the rest of his career.

As for Vitters what is there to like about him? No glove, hits .270/.320 .....whooopdy fucking do. Junior Lake is no better, just has better speed.

And everyone's favorite Bjax makes Vittters hitting eye look like Ichiro in his prime. 70 strikeouts in 200 AB's? That rate will explode in the majors while he hits about .150.

Rizzo is it from our system and he isn't home grown like Vitters and Jackson. And Rizzo is only 22 himself....what the hell is Jackson and Vitters problem when using the well they are still young for the level arguement!?!?!?! You either got it or you don't and Vitters and Jackson don't have it and are no where close to finding it.

1) If BJax batting eye is so bad....how does he manage .265/.343/.505 even while struggling in AAA? A career OBP of .388 so far?
I'll wait to start condemning prospects until they fail in the majors I suppose.
2) For all of LaHair's struggles in May, his May OPS+ was still 116

1) How does he manage to punch out so much? You do realize those rates go higher while walks drop in the transition to the majors don't you? You can't step to the plate and strikeout once for every 2 AB's. And he isn't blessed with + anything.

2) Last 28 days a .682 OPS and dropping fast for LaHair, nuff said on that. Losing 80 points of BA in less than a month does that to you. That's alot of 0fers.

I'm just not going to start burying people yet based on that sample size, as I was not ready to anoint him either
BJax? K's too much. Yep. Somehow he's manage to hit at every level so far, and has put up decent a decent power/speed combo in 3 seasons in the minors.
Again, I'm not just going to dismiss him based on 1/4 of his first full season in AAA.

He takes a lot of pitches, including, I suspect, third strikes. It seems that whenever I look at a play-by-play game summary and he fans, it's a called third strike. The other day I watched him on gameday and he took every pitch and finally got a 6-pitch walk. This is obviously anecdotal but I don't think anyone is counting swings and misses for minor leaguers.

Everyone says about Jackson that he has "too much swing and miss." Maybe, maybe not. You have to count swings and misses versus takes to say that for sure.

Suppose for a moment that (1) a fairly high percentage of Jackson's K's are takes, and (2) major league umpires put the squeeze on pitchers more than they do at triple A. Would Jackson's K's go up or down in the majors?

What is the ceiling on him at this point? Jeff Baker without a glove?

Vitters hit his 5th homer in the last 10 games tonight. His walks are improving but may never be a strength, but I still don't really understand....why, if he is on pace for a 20 homer season as the youngest player on our AAA team do you, MikeC and others significantly discount his upside? Especially relative to others...at your and MikeC's analysis, we might not have any useful prospects in our entire system other than Rizzo.

I'm not sold that we have a star player in our system at this point.

Rizzo is an nice prospect. I can see him being a Carlos Pena type of player going forward.

Bjax has nice plate discipline and some solid tools. He might not make enough contact to be more than a decent regular.

Baez looks great so far. However the lack of walks that low down the system makes you question what will happen when he sees advanced comp. He looks like the highest upside bat.

Beyond those 3 guys, I don't think we have another legitimate MLB starter in the system. Just my humble opinion.

Well, it seems possible that some of Szczur, DeVoss, Alcantara, Lake, Torreyes, Vogelbach, Shoulders, Candelairo, etc. could become everyday players. But it seems like maybe you're only interested in players who are more safely projectable? I wouldn't place a bet on any of those players individually, but I think that the Cubs will produce an everyday player or two out of guys currently in the farm system and not on that 3-player list.

Actually it was his 5th in 8 games. It's his best home-run spurt by far since May 2009 at Peoria when (in the same streak) he hit 5 HRs in 6 games, 8 in 10 games and 10 in 15.

Back then, even Dr. AB was a Vitters fan.

I wanted them to draft Weiters at the time. In general I hated that we had to go cheap with the 3rd pick in the draft.

I thought Vitters might be something. He might actually have some kind of MLB career. He just hasn't really ever seemed to improve from year to year. The same issues he's had are the same issues he still has today.

I wanted Weiters too, but many assumed that Vitters was going to be selected #2 (by the Royals, I believe). That said, I think his limited improvement is, at least to an extent, explained by his rather swift promotions. He is still the youngest player on our AAA team and is having a nice season and, in my opinion, is showing marked improvement between this season and last.

I always thought it was stupid how they kept promoting him after a half season of success at almost every level. Then he would struggle...then end up back at that level the next seson...have success...get promoted...struggle.. rinse and repeat.

Though even his "success" at any level has always been in the smallest of sample sizes.

I'm not sure if he's gotten better or learned the leagues better? He still has terrible strike zone judgement and a bad glove by all accounts.

I just can't get behind a guy who isn't more than Scott Moore as our future at 3rd base.

If Vitters hits 25 HRs at Iowa this season, as he has started to show signs of doing, he'll start to separate from Moore, who had 22 at double-A at the same age.

But the glaring separator between Vitters and Moore is strikeouts.

Brett Jackson is more the same type of hitter as Moore, except that he's a better version: much higher OBP and SLG, plus he can run and catch.

Anyway, I'm sure you liked Moore at the time, for his walks.

Vitters has never been over 18 Homers in a season. Calling for 25 seems fairly optimistic.

He does make contact and doesn't strike out. However he never walks either.

Is it a function of awesome contact, or is it that he looks for the first thing close to the zone to stay away from the 2-strike pitch?

I don't know. I haven't been a big fan, but that changes if he hits 25 at Iowa, partly because the Cubs are so desperate right now for a righty slugger. I don't want to have to wait for Baez to climb the ladder, or for Castro to learn what a hitter's count is, which could take as long as it has taken Vitters.

i would care a lot more about vitters if his D would improve enough to stick at 3rd.

imo, he's doing well with his bat for a guy his age in AAA...especially the quality of contact he's making early for power. he's not looking like a superstar, but he's looking good enough to say he's done with AA and belongs in AAA.

if he's a .270/.330 avg/ob% guy with 25 HR power at 3rd...that's something many teams would love to live with.

if he's that same guy at RF/LF/1st he's a power bench guy on some teams and a cheap mid-level-talent starter on a few others.

I would take those numbers from Vitters in left field just because no righty hitter above Baez (with the possible exception of Lake) can match them. That's just where we are right now, desperately needing two righty hitters who can produce those numbers. You can trade Garza for a left fielder but then you're getting one less starting pitcher back.

What's different for a college senior with no eligibility remaining is that the deadline for signing the player is one week prior to the next Rule 4 Draft (this was the case in previous years as well), rather than the first Friday after the MLB All-Star Game (which is the new signing deadline for all other players selected in the Rule 4 Draft or who were eligible for selection but were not drafted).

i would think for those interested in signing the player, it would play into their drafting strategies and budgets.

It is strange that this happened on a Saturday, and the draft is Monday.

Phil - if a college player with no eligibility left does not sign, does he eventually become a free agent, with the ability to sign for anything with anybody, or is he eligible for the draft forever?

I believe he becomes a free agent approximately a week before the next draft.

EDIT: Phil touched on it on the previous page of comments and said it was the week before the '13 draft.
