Will the Vogelbach Curse Haunt Boise Hawks?

Dan Vogelbach singled twice, doubled, drove-in three runs, and scored three more, Carlos Penalver collected three singles and two RBI and scored two runs, and Danny Lockhart had four hits (three singles and a double) and scored twice, leading the AZL Cubs to a 12-6 victory over the Boise Hawks this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

Rock Shoulders (two singles, a double, and a walk) and Marco Hernandez (two singles, a triple, and two RBI) were the offensive stars for Boise in a losing cause.

Supersub IF-OF Gregori Gonzalez made his 2012 game debut today at DH. He suffered a broken arm in Spring Training.

Since Friday's intrasquad game, centerfielders Shawon Dunston Jr and Trey Martin have switched places, with Dunston now assigned to Boise and Martin assigned to the AZL Cubs. Also, OF Dong-Yub Kim (the hottest hitter at EXST over the last month, or actually ever since he started throwing left-handed) was the DH for Boise after playing with the AZL Cubs last week.

If you want to know how fluid the Boise and AZL Cubs rosters are right now, Brian Inoa was a DH for the AZL Cubs for the first six innings of today's game, and then got a "battlefield promotion" mid-game (after Gregori Gonzalez reported to the AZL Cubs bench and said his arm felt 100%), and he played 2nd base for Boise the last three frames. For the day (five PA combined between AZL Cubs and Boise), Inoa had three hits and a walk, scored two runs, and knocked in a couple more.

You occasionally hear stories about a guy getting traded between games of a doubleheader... How about getting promoted during the game?

None of the pitchers who threw in the game today game had much success, with the exception of veteran RHP Shane Lindsay, who struck out the side in the 9th on 11 pitches. The 27-year old Australian fireballer was sent to Fitch Park from AAA Iowa to work on his mechanics, and if today was any indication, his mechanics are just fine now. (The Cubs signed Lindsay to a minor league contract after he was releaed by the Dodgers last month).

Boise RHP James Pugliese had an especially poor outing, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk in five innings (81 pitches). Pugliese had been the best pitcher at Extended Spring Training over the previous nine weeks.

Prior to the game on Field #3, RHP Justin Berg (2011 TJS rehab) and LHP Zac Rosscup (biceps tendinitis) squared-off in a two-inning "sim" game on Field #2.

The Hawks will be flying to Boise tomorrow morning, and their first game is Friday night versus Salem-Keizer at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, OR

Meanwhile, the AZL Cubs will continue to train & drill at Fitch Park ad nauseum for another week or so as draft picks begin to arrive (11th rounder IF-OF Rashad Crawford was there today, but he is not ready to play in games yet), before opening AZL play a week from Wednesday versus the AZL Giants up the road at HoHoKam Park.

All of the AZL Cubs games (home & road) will be night games (7 PM local start-time). The AZL Cubs will play games four nights in a row and then have a day-off every fifth day.

Pierce Johnson announced through his Twitter that he's signed with the Cubs.

Just signed with the Chicago Cubs! Thanks to God, family, teammates, coaches, and friends. If it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't be here!

#Cubs signed supplemental rounder, #MoState P Pierce Johnson. Sources said it was close or right at slot (value was $1.196M).

I-Cubs down 6-7 in the bottom 6th...2 on, one out (pitching change):

Rizzo 2-3, 2runs, 4rbi, 1K, TWO HR's including a 3 run HR in the 5th.
Vitters 2-3, 1 run, 1rbi, including a double.
BJax 1-3, 1 run, 1K

JJax pitching himself out of the last embers of prospect status: 3.2 IP, 11H, 7R (all earned), 3BB, 5K

If the Cubs wait to bring Rizzo up until June 23rd (or later), they buy another year of team control.

Anybody want to try the over/under on the recall?

I'm going with Monday June 25th, which is the start of a six-game homestand during which time the Cubs play the Mets and the Astros.

That will be it, I believe.

Then LaHair will platoon with Mather in RF, and DeJesus will play CF for a while (until trades open up the roster a bit).

Don't know, might not make it up until later see how trade deadline plays out.

Just a hunch.

Goodness. If you translate Rizzo's numbers out to a full season, he's on pace for 60 HR and 160 RBI. I believe 60 is the PCL record FWIW, but no way Rizzo stays on the farm long enough to challenge it. I agree, he'll be in Chicago before the end of the month.

Baseball America has the PCL single-season homerun record at 50 by Ron Kittle in 1982. (INTL is Phil Hiatt with 42 in 1996.)

OR Bill McNulty with 55, but that's an asterisk record because his home park that year had a left field fence at only 250 feet.

I'm guessing the ASB myself.

Speaking of Cubans...

Peoria in a 9-9 game in the 7th

G. Concepcion 4.0 IP, 11H, 9R (all earned), 3BB, 1K, 1HR, ERA 7.50

Javier Baez not in the lineup (Wes Darvill in at SS tonight)

Are you sure that isn't a typo? In 4 IP, he gave up 9 runs but struck out all but one of the outs he recorded? Really?

oops, 11 Hits

I was going to say, 9 runs, 3 BBs, and 11 Ks in just 4 IP would have to be one of the strangest outings ever. But 11H, ugly ugly.....Concepcion has a LONG way to go.

speaking of horrific starts...

t.mcnutt - 3.1ip 9h 8er 0bb 2k

Everybody caught whatever Samardzija came down with in his last game.

Peoria wins 10-9 with a Dustin Geiger rbi single in the bottom of the 9th.

Third baseman, Dustin Geiger 4-5, 3 runs, 3 rbi, 2 run HR,

I am sure that is only a partial roster. I doubt the Hawks are going with only one catcher. I believe the roster limit is 30 at Boise.

Only 21 players will be on the flight from Phoenix this morning. Undoubtedly, more will arrive, but not before the team's Media Day. Guessing the Cubs will save $$$ and fly draft picks directly into Portland instead of Boise and have them meet the club in Salem. Gotta have the $$$ for Soler.

Tue, 06/12/2012 - 6:38am — Hagsag

I am sure that is only a partial roster. I doubt the Hawks are going with only one catcher. I believe the roster limit is 30 at Boise.

===============================

HAGSAG: Boise has a 35-man Reserve List and a 30 man Active List.

25 players are designated "active" for each game, of which ten must be pitchers.

So ideally Boise would eventually have 15 position players and 15 pitchers on the Active List.

BTW, the AZL Cubs and the two DSL Cubs squads have a 35-man Reserve List and a 35-man Active List (the two lists are one in the same), with 25 players designated "active" for each game, of which ten must be pitchers.

Thanks Phil

How long has Bill Buckner been a hitting coach with the Cubs system? He was unquestionably my favorite Cub when I was a little boy.

New hire this year.

He was not my favorite Cub, but productive as a Cub.

And can't be beat for a uni-brow.

Buckner lives in Idaho, so apparently the hitting coach job at Boise was an offer he couldn't refuse.

BTW, his mustache is gone. I didn't even recognize him when I first saw him this year.

that was a horse sh!t throw, Larry.

Buxton allegedly getting more than Correia. Bad agenting.

Danny Knobler tweets that Dodgers are definitely interested in Dempster.

Are they definitely interested in offering something of value for Dempster?

Is Dempster definitely interested in playing on the other side of the country?

  • With several other Cubs hitters bailing out on curves today I think overall it wasn't being seen well. It for sure looked silly but a good breaking pitch coming at you and then breaking down isn't the easiest thing to see and has made many hitters look silly. Also Soler should have more walks this year but for quite a few called strikes that were actual balls and even the called strike he bailed on was borderline.

  • it's not like we're talking about a guy who's never had issues with pitch selection and seeing the ball over here. we're talking about a guy who has some rather legendary swing-and-misses at breaking stuff who's been exploited low. going forward it's worth paying attention to seeing if he can be exploited inside, too. he seriously bailed out of the box on a called strike. sure it was a good curve, but he obviously didn't see that well at all.

  • It would seem like he is figuring it out now and it's really coming together. Really happy for him. Joe was really protecting him from the 3rd time through the order, but as you allude to, he is earning trust to go deeper.

Wondering if has potential to become a #3 pitcher? His current stats certainly support it.

  • That doesn't count b/c CRUNCH didn't see it on his 60" HDTV 5 times in replay.

I have seen many players "bail out" when the ball looked like it was gonna hit them.

Especially with the advent of the splitter and pitchers that can really get the ball to dance. Marmol, Sutter, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Smoltz, Arrietta...

These guys have made the best bail out only for the ball to come over the plate and be called a strike.

No shame in that. The same way players whiff hard enough to cause them to drill a hole in the ground from spinning.

  • a 60" TV with slow-motion replay and multiple looks on that replay helps...a lot...

it's one thing to shy away like he did the 2nd time, it's another to bail out of the box on a called strike. that happened in the 1st one he pulled away from. he misjudged that one by a foot or so...

  • Good Hendricks sure is fun to watch. He was hitting all his corners today and the Phillies couldn't do anything with his changeup.

johann 4 hours 10 min ago view
  • Bryant and I believe Zobrist both did that too.

  • Soler BB acumen and plate awareness is excellent. Not unusual for even the best players to react as if they were about to hit them, "even though they weren't that close" from your vantage point sitting on your deck, or wherever.

  • soler vs inside breaking balls is scary.

he's had 2 inside curve balls today where he reacted as if they were about to hit him even though they weren't that close...one he bailed out of the box on, it was a called strike.

  • j.urias optioned back to AAA...guess we wont be seeing him in the LAD series.

  • so is him actually getting 2 hits in a game (2 doubles!)...first time he's even been on base 2 times in a game since 9 games ago on his 3/4, 1bb day.

im ready for him to at least look like a 2-slot hitter since he's gonna be slotted there no matter what he does.

  • That Heyward move to avoid Bryant's ball hit at him was a thing of beauty too.

  • 9 pitches in and this game already rules.

HR, double...bryant's turn (who came out to a Kris Kross song for some horrible, horrible reason).

    ...2 run inning...zoobrest hitting streak at 14.

  • First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester.

Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

  • Obviously not Phil. But he mentioned this on Wednesday.

"Dominican Summer League (DSL) Opening Day is Saturday June 4th, so probably about 8-10 pitchers and position players presently at EXST in Mesa will be sent to the Cubs Dominican Academy (probably sometime this week) and be assigned to either DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2."

  • Per FanGraphs, Cubs have a 72.5% chance of winning today. Jinx! Next highest percentage on today's games is D-backs with a 64.7% chance (Greinke vs. Cesar Vargas, in Arizona.)
