Game 63 Threa...Dear God, 100 More Games of This Sh**?!?!?!

The Cubs go for the series win behind Travis Wood. The Tigers counter with Justin Verlander. Over/under on Verlander K's at 11. Over/under on hits for the Cubs is 2. Take the over on the K's and under on the hits. Hell, perfect game #23 doesn't sound too unreasonable.

Tigers Cubs
Jackson, CF
*Campana, CF
*Boesch, RF
Castro, SS
Cabrera, 3B
*DeJesus, RF
*Fielder, 1B
Soriano, LF
Young, LF
*LaHair, 1B
Peralta, SS
*Clevenger, C
Raburn, 2B
Barney, 2B
Laird, C
*Valbuena, 3B
Verlander, P
Wood, P

In roster manuevering, Koyie Hill was DFA'd to make room for Luis Valbuena on the 40-man, who was called up to take the place of Ian Stewart who went on the disabled list to rest up his ailing wrist. And Welington Castillo was activated as well and should certainly see his share of starts before Geovany Soto is ready, which should also be rather soon.

Steve Clevenger, #6 hitter. Murderers' Row, baby.

Best headline of the year (other than AZ PHILS gems)!!!!!!!

take insurmountable 1-0 lead on 2-out double by Fielder on a 1-2 count.

flies to center. They should make him do push-ups.

He should only be bunting

there goes the Verlander no-no (and shutout)

Actually Brenly mentioned yesterday that Campana should be bunting every time up with Cabrera at third. Makes sense to me, why doesn't Sveum tell him to do it?

depends where Cabrera is setting up, but at the very least, he should be making a very concerted effort to hit it to the that side of the infield as much as possible.

Bunting Verlander is no easy task though.

5-4-3 Double play on Miguel Cabrera, even after Valbuena drops the ball to start with...

has had the best AB's of anyone today...and some of the worst baserunning. Although with 2 outs and top of order due up, that would be the time to try and stretch it, but not even close.

Good to see some double plays turned.

lol @7th.

"let me tell you...you tigers fans SUCK!"

followed by gasps (there's a ton of DET fans in audience) and laughs.

welcome to wrigley.

who was the 7in stretch person?

jeff garlin...actor/comedian/writer/voice-actor/etc

Peoria is 10-2 in June and has climbed back up to .500 at 33-33.

Tennessee is 10-3 this month and is within a game of .500.

Daytona is 5 under, while (underachieving?) Iowa is 9 under.

#Cubs‬ sign 4th-rder Josh Conway for $280k (pick value=$343,200). ‪#CoastalCarolina‬ RHP had 94-96 FB, nasty SL before TJ surgery. ‪#mlbdraft

5th rounder Prieto signed for $200K, about $57K less than slot

http://www.elpasotimes.com/ci_20853855/prieto...

someone on twitter tells me that 3rd round pick Ryan McNeil tweeted that he has signed.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/2012xt...

appears 4th(Conway), 7th (Steve Bruno), 8th(Michael Heesch), 9th(Chadd Krist) round picks have signed and rumors say P. Johnson (1S pick), McNeil (3rd round) and Prieto (5th round) have also signed. Padilla says 6 lower round selections are set to sign as well (that may include the anyone below Round 5 as he was talking about Conway signing).

looks like he's got Prieto's number off, but here's some numbers

http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2012/06/cu...
(paid vs. slot)
Conway $280K vs $343K
Prieto $200K vs $257K
Bruno $150K vs. $148.6K
Heesch $10K vs. $138.8K
Krist $10K vs. $119.6K

about $350K in bonus pool money saved ($7,933,900 is the magic number).

P. Johnson (allegedly around slot)
says 10th round pick Chad Martin has also signed, value unknown

j.torre to manage Team USA at the 2013 WBC...which i wish was every year...or every other year.

"#Cubs vs #Tigers drew 124,782, largest mid-week three-game series in Wrigley Field history. "

where the hell did all these DET fans come from anyway? i'd hear cheers, look up, and it's because DET is doing something good.

it's like they decided to do some weird flashmob on wrigley.

Approx. 10% of Wrigleyville is native to MI. No jobs in MI. Or relevant major cities.

Tigers fans stretch across the state, and southwest Michigan is only 75 minutes from Chicago. Quite a few Tigers fans I know made the trip for the first time.

Went to Cubs vs Tigers 6/98 in Detoit.
Wood pitched, Sammy broke month record for hrs.
They ran out of hot dogs in 4th, beer in the 6 th.

dusty vs. d.lowe = awesome

there's much more than this, but it's a good start...

Heesch $10K vs. $138.8K
Krist $10K vs. $119.6K

Awesome....by a factor of 10 yet!

That is why we drafted them in the 8th and 9th round. The salary cap discrepancy between the first 10 rounds and after 10 makes this important. Any player from 11-40 can be signed for up to $100k without affecting the cap, but anything less doesn't save money. For players in the first 10 rounds, this savings for Heesch and Krist can be used to sign other players (including players 11-40 by giving them over $100k).

Where is the extra money going Almora or Whistman ( the guy headed for Vanderbilt). I say Whistman.

Sorry a name correction on above post. The name is Wiseman, the 25th round selection.

Obstructed View blog article on the limited trade value of Soriano using his estimated WAR over the this season (2.0) and the two remaining on his contract (2013 at 1.5, 2014 at 1.0).

We'll go with .7 WAR the final two months and the next two years remain the same. His overall trade value at the end of July is now $17.75 million and he'll be paid $42 million. His surplus trade value is -$24.25 million.
That's the amoung the Cubs will have to send in any trade just to get absolutely nothing in return.

  • trevor clifton (high-A) could be interesting in a couple seasons...could even become a high/middle rotation guy. he's got a lot of pluses in his pitching except control.

eric leal's (high-A) progression through the minors should be worth watching even if only projects to be an mid/end-rotation starter.

we also gotta keep a long-distance eye on guys like jose paulino (ss-A) and preston morrison (A).

  • As Johnny Bach used to say when it was time for the MJ Bulls to crank up the defensive pressure: "Release the Dobermans!", and Jordan, Pippen, Rodman and Harper would just suffocate the other team.

I'd love to add Carl Jr. to that group - he's got the stuff.

  • Historically, the Moneyball guys have been great at identifying productive hitters. Not so much with pitchers.

  • Wow - Pierce Johnson with an ERA of 8.01 in 42IP!

What a stud prospect! Must be pitching with a pierced johnson.

Looks like Ryan Williams is the only legit prospect there. That is sad...

  • Well it would seem that's all they need now. "Stropy" can have his moments, but he's been more consistent post-asg.

  • Take THAT, Cardinals -- you beat Fernandez, we beat Sale.

I really like Lackey as a 6-inning pitcher.

  • ...and Familia with back-to-back blown saves. Blows a one-run lead vs. Rockies today, gets his 2nd consecutive loss.

I am OK with the Mets missing the playoffs and suffering crushing losses at home --- just want them to beat St. Louis.

He played with fire twice agains the Cubs -- unfortunately, the Cubs couldn't stop swinging.

  • I think Javy is learning--but he's learning to make contact, not learning to lay off pitches out of the zone. A quick glance at his plate discipline numbers on Fangraphs shows that his contact rate is up, especially his contact rate out of the zone, but his swing rate is up too, especially his swing rate out of the zone.

  • I definitely saw ballpark radar guns go up to 102 on Kerry Wood back when he was still a starter, but who knows how accurate they were.
