Saturday Funnies: Carlos Marmol is Nausea's favorite pitcher.

Pretty cool game last night.
Johan Santana vs Travis Wood in New York with the Mets in 2nd behind Washington in the East and the Cubs sort of a related development.
But whatever, Reed Johnson led off with a homer, got 4 hits and scored 3 times.
Jeff Baker hit one out, Alfonso Soriano went 2 for 4 and knocked one in (he's now 26 RBIs from 1000).
Geovany Soto got 2 hits to raise his average to .175!
But the star of last night's game was young stud pup Anthony Rizzo.
4 for 5 including a 3 run homer in the 5th off Santana and breaking the Mets' back.

Cubs up 8-4 and man are things ever comfy here in the 9th.
But then in comes Carlos Marmol.
Who throws for like another hour.
He gave up a couple hits including a homer, walks 3 in a row, and 3 runs.
When David Wright came up as the tying run I was...well I was with some friends sitting at the bar of a nice Italian place called Mia Figlia over on Devon.
Behind me is a roomful of respectable people - the kind who make an effort to dress nicely even though it's one hundred and three degrees outside.
They're all enjoying their excellent Italian meals and I thought man, if Carlos Marmol makes me hurl right now I'll ruin everyone's dinner.
He walks Wright, which was better than the homer I thought was about to happen, and it was then that I heard a familiar voice.
"Carlos Marmol is my favorite pitcher!" said Nausea.
It's never good to hear from that guy.
Finally, by the grace of the Baseball Gods some Met hit an easy liner to Marmol who tosses to first for a DP that ends the game.
Young Travis Wood gets to keep his W, and we all go home happy.
Except Nausea.

I hate it when teams don't sell high. Like, the day before would have been a perfect opportunity to trade Marmol.

It's not like other teams don't have smart GMs though. If I were a GM of another team, I wouldn't rely on Marmol doing well in a few games to drive my decision making when he's done pretty badly a while before that.

Are you trying to tell me there are not any teams with dumb GMs?

25 years ago today, the Eric Show game.

cocaine and hardcore conservative politics for all! ...but mostly cocaine.

RIP Alan Wiggins...

Wait, Tim: You sure you don't mean "Ghandi Restaurant" or Bombay Palace" on Devon? Not an Italian joint?

As you know, I'm easily confused. Which is why I took the business card.

ANy opinions on Dustin Geiger? 20 y.o. 3B at Class A Peoria?
.319/.375/.574, 7HR, 20 RBI in 94 at bats. I know small sample size, but he is
definitely on a tear.

AZ Phil posted this reply on the Vogelbomb thread

Dustin Geiger is quietly having a nice season with the bat at Peoria including 3 HR in the last two games. Does he have any chance at 3B or is he just another Jeff Baker type.

====================================

CUBSTER: When the Cubs drafted Dustin Geiger in 2010, they anounced in the draft conference-call that they were drafting him as a RF, because that's how he was projected by the Cubs area scout who turned him in.

But when he signed with the Cubs (to an overslot bonus) the Cubs designated him a 3B, and although he has played both 3B and 1B over the past three seasons, he is a shaky infield defender, so he ultimately probably still projects best as a RF because of his plus-arm.

I would think he will eventually morph into a corner IF-OF (1B-3B-LF-RF).

Not a problem for me... I occasionally have to re-login, but it is pretty rare.

And that is probably just because the cookie expires after a week or whatever.

Cookies are too delicious to let expire.

I've only had log out problems when I flop between work computer, home computer, iPhone, and iPad too much.

I dunno I don't have any issues on my Mac but Windows won't keep me logged in. Cookies seem to be on. Oh well I hate Windows with a passion anyway.

BP/Kevin Goldstein from his "future shock" blog of July 2nd...

Josh Vitters, 3B, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 2-for-4, 2B, RBI. Hitting .314 and slugging .602 since the calendar flipped to June; .301/.352/.514 overall.
Dan Vogelbach, 1B, Cubs (Rookie-level AZL Cubs): 2-for-5, HR (2), R, 2 RBI, K. Hone runs in back-to-back games to go with seven doubles in nine; beefy first baseman is hitting .462/.500/.846.

lengthy BP article mostly on Castro by Sahadev Sharma (also at ESPN Chicago)...

Castro is far from perfect, but with Rizzo garnering all the attention of late, it’s as if people have forgotten just how valuable Castro truly is to the franchise. The first symbol of the Cubs’ (hopeful) future triumph may have been Rizzo’s call-up to the big leagues. However, the most important step could come this offseason, when Epstein and General Manager Jed Hoyer should attempt to lock up Castro to a long-term extension.

DeJesus, Castro, Rizzo, Soriano, LaHair, Clevenger, Barney, Valbuena, Shark vs. Dillon Gee

interesting to see Clevenger getting more playing time.

rizzo...that "out of sync" D.

like castro, we gotta live with some of this stuff.

it's not blatant ignorance...it's not laziness...it's just the things you learn over time and he's learning on the job even if he is more advanced in age than castro.

he was out of position on a ball he assumed the pitcher would cover his bag on...the track of the ball should have tipped riz to return to 1st while the 2nd baseman covered it. even if riz got to the ball he'd have his back to the play and momentum going opposite of the play. ninja had a non-confrontational chat with him after the play.

this all happened in a matter of seconds and it's just an instinct play. he'll "get" these things as he matures as a defender.

man on 2nd, 0 out...why is ninja swinging and not bunting?

-edit-

ground out to 2nd on a 2-2 count...runner advances...no harm. woo.

also, fwiw his K-rate compared to ABs is pretty low for a pitcher (around 20%) this season...so that might be part of the thinking.

also also, run scores... 1-3 top 6, 1 out.

also, the home plate area is flooded wet today (extending out about 6-10') for some reason...balls are dieing in the mud.

i don't know why they have the plate area so wet vs the mets.

Cubs Minor Leaguers Ian Dickson (@dicksoni), James Pugliese (@Pugs51), Roderick Shoulders (@RockBigFly24) and Tayler Scott (@taylerscottsa), who are all with Class A Boise, had a friendly competition with Class A Peoria third baseman Dustin Geiger (@D_Geiger) on Saturday while riding their respective buses to games. They tried to see who could get the most Twitter followers. The two sides raised the ante, too, with Scott offering a traditional African bead bracelet and the Chiefs offering autographed items.

stoopid Sunday headlines:

Gee Whiz

Pirates ahead 3-1 in the 6th. If they win, they will have clinched their 2nd straight first place finish at the All-Star Break.

evan meek inherits the earth, woo

rizzo is not impressed by your 99mph fastball, parnell...

seriously, though...where are they planning to put the rizzo statue at wrigley?

stoopid Sunday headlines:

If/When Dylan Gee beats the Brewers the headline becomes: Gee Cheese Whiz

rotoworld writeup...

Carlos Zambrano struggled in a losing effort against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits over his five innings of work.
Big Z fanned four and walked two on the day. All of the damage came in the fourth inning where the first four Cardinals reached, including a two-run triple from Tony Cruz. After starting off the season strong, Zambrano has seen his ERA rise from 2.81 to 3.84 over his last six outings. He finishes the first half of the season with a 4-7 record and 75/53 K/BB ratio in 100 2/3 innings.

and they're about to lose g/m.stanton to knee surgery for 4-6 weeks...fun times in MIA.

Michael Bourne added to All Star squad, Ian Desmond out with sore oblique

another loss, another Rizzo 2-4

ho-hum

b.harper makes the AS team...ha.

They should've made him and Trout the captains of the Futures teams instead. Eddie Lunchbox might've actually watched it.

Vitters makes his 15th error of the season in the 3rd, low throw 1B-Lalli couldn't scoop it but C-Esposito backed up the play. The error lead to the Omaha run.

Iowa a head 2-1. bottom 3rd.

Smiley Caridad staring. Not sure if there is a problem with Chris Rusin who was supposed to start.
Ty Wright on the DL with a stress fracture in his leg (he's been out of the lineup since June 29th)

Vitters rbi double in the 7th, I-Cubs ahead 3-2

McCutcheon replaces GC Stanton in the HR derby

(LaHair snub?)

I'm glad LaHair isn't hitting in the derby. I don't have any medical proof, doc, but I can't help but think there is a lot of wear and tear on the wrists during that thing. I'd rather see LaHair stay focused on getting better against lefties, if given a chance to.

I wish we had an AZ Phil of basketball around. I don't understand how the Heat can keep signing these guys. Now they get Ray Allen. I know he took half the money Boston I guess offered and he's 36, but don't they have a damn salary cap? The Bulls can't get a thing done because of theirs.

The Bulls don't get a thing done because Reinsdorf is incredibly cheap and won't let the team go in the luxury tax, and because Paxson and Forman are ultra, ultra cautious and don't have the balls to try to make a big move. It's not the salary cap that prevents them from doing that.

Who would you want them to sign?

They should suck next couple of years then sign some players around rose.

I agree garpax are weak they should be in on D Howard .

Heat, btw, announced they are losing money this year.

They should suck next couple of years then sign some players around rose.

Huh? A team of Deng, Noah, and Rose, plus a very good supporting cast, won't suck. Maybe won't be able to beat the Heat or the Thunder, but they won't suck.

But hey - they got Heinrich! Yay?

White Chicago rejoice!!!!

Well Deng will be out until January, and Rose I would say won't be worth anything next year.

So hello suckage, embrace it like with the Cubs.

Get in lottery a few time let the overpaid non-offensive threats go and start over with a 26 year old ROse

I kind of hope they trash next year for a good draft pick. Plus they should throw every game vs Charlotte since the Bulls get their pick if it's outside the top 12 or 14. Throw away Boozer after this upcoming season and boom, you've got a new team.

Well Deng will be out until January, and Rose I would say won't be worth anything next year.

So how does that equate with the next couple of years sucking?

Deng may not be out. Allegedly he's not having the surgery that would keep him out.

Ben Wallace was a big move. Didn't work out, but it was a big move.

They tried to get LeBron and Wade. Not a big enough effort?

Hell... Carlos Boozer was a big move. It was a bad move, but it was still a big move.

Not Reinsdorf's fault...... I blame Michael Barrett

KC Johnson reporting that Kirk Heinrich has agreed to sign with the Bulls

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketba...

Value on the cheap!

But hey - they got Heinrich! Yay?
---
Not exactly like bring back Greg Maddux or Fergie Jenkins at the end of their careers. More like bringing back Ryan Theriot.

hahaha

Except you could at least play lawn darts with Theriot.

Well played.

Heinrich deal, 2 yrs - $6M

ain't no 3/44 but don't sneeze at it.

Right now the Cubbies would settle for two new baseball bats and some catchers gear. Marmol, according to typical reliever history, has already peaked. Any hope for performance improvement is just wishful thinking. Other teams, as well as Theo know this. Chances of getting something are close to nil.
