Braves Appear to Win the Ryan Dempster Lotto

David O'Brien started it all with a tweet saying that the Braves were close to finalizing a deal for a starting pitcher and then Jon Heyman, Jerry Crasnick and Jason Stark said it was Ryan Dempster.

Here's a top 20 Braves prospect list to start speculating upon. I'm hoping Cubs can get one of Randall Delgado or Mike Minor and another decent arm.

Details emerging...

UPDATE #1: beat writer for the Braves does say that Delgado could be one of the parts heading to the Cubs.

UPDATE #2: No doubt this is happening now and could be completed by the afternoon. Still awaiting the specifics though.

UPDATE #3: Keith Law speaks, "Filed to ESPN - if the Dempster trade is completed, Randall Delgado is in it, as well as something to balance the money". If that is indeed the complete deal, it's going to be Dempster and $$ for Delgado, or 2 months of Dempster for 5+ years of Delgado at pre-arbitration money until about 2015.

UPDATE #4: Kapman throws a little water on the fire, saying talks still ongoing. Also rumors now from Jim Bowden that Cubs and Dodgers are waist-deep in a Matt Garza for Zach Lee swap.

UPDATE #5: The twitter account for Dempster's charity(from which TCR has been banned from for some reason) has this sobering tweet: "THERE IS NO TRADE dont know where this info came from!" Well la-dee-da!

UPDATE #6: Kaplan says the deai is just awaiting Dempster's approval, and judging by Dempster's tweet, that's not a sure thing.

UPDATE #7: So Dempster is refusing to talk about it to reporters, other than to say there is no trade. Delgado's agent hasn't heard anything. As the trade world turns...

UPDATE #8: As I, and I'm sure many others suspected, Heyman is saying the Cubs and Braves have agreed to a deal, but Dempster hasn't waived his 10/5 rights...and it certainly sounds like he's holding on to that bargaining chip for as long as he can.

UPDATE #9: Nightengale with the same info, deal agreed upon between Cubs and Braves, just a matter if Dempster will approve. Len already tweeted a farewell to Dempster.

FINAL UPDATE FOR TODAY: The Cubs brass have told Sveum that no deal is done and earlier reports were false, but does say that Dempster still could be traded. Translation: The Cubs brass fucked up and didn't keep Dempster in the loop and they're in damage control now.

Mark Bowman
Confirmed Ryan Dempster is coming to the Braves. Still trying to confirm details but Delgado could be on the other end of the deal

slow on the trigger Cubster...

Haha! one really has to be Jessie James around these parts.

if the Dempster trade is completed, Randall Delgado is in it, as well as something to balance the money

Cubs not resting on their laurels continue trade discussions with Dodgers on deal that would send Matt Garza for package including Zach Lee

Colby Lewis is out for the yr according to the Rangers even more likely now that Olt and/or MPerez will be dealt for Hamels,Garza or Greinke

I just don't see Philly trading Hamels.

(I think Kaplan is referring to Atlanta/Dempster)
Ryan Dempster traded to Atlanta. Sources tell me Cubs made great deal to land young pitching. I am working on names. Back at u all shortly. (1:16, cst)

thekapman David Kaplan (2:12, cst)
Just spoke with great source. No deal has been agreed upon. Talks ongoing. Nothing done yet.
Ken Rosenthal also pee-d on his shoe.

And, Nick Cafarro weighed in that the Cubs should give the newly acquired players to the Red Sox as part of a more fair compensation for Theo.

And, Nick Cafarro weighed in that the Cubs should give the newly acquired players to the Red Sox as part of a more fair compensation for Theo.
Cafardo is gullible enough that he'd probably think it was OK if he was getting This guy for Theo

The theo deal is done. Time to move on, Boston.

Zach Lee is nowhere near enough for Garza. Lee's star has fallen almost as fast this year as Trey McNutt's did last year. Hell, the Cubs minor leaguers have pounded Lee twice this season already. Just say no.

will the real Ryan Dempster please stand up?

THERE IS NO TRADE dont know where this info came from!

Joe Sheehan out of Atlanta says the Braves have "vacated the Dempster trade."

there's some "Vacating" joke meme he's been doing, Sheehan is not a breaker of news.

He needs some new material.

fuck the internet sometimes...

Per Muskat, Kaplan and Padilla:

Dempster just walked into the clubhouse and is putting on his Cubs uniform.

Padilla/ESPN-Dempster declines to talk. Won't discuss Speculation.

Dempster walked into the clubhouse (not the beginning of a joke). I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

His tweet sounded like a man perturbed that he had to hear it from twitter or somewhere other than the powers-that-be. Although, if he's annoyed by that, where the fuck has he been the last 2 months?

As the kids would say, "Really?"

(or his Captain America costume?)

Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal
My best guess on what's happening with #Cubs' Dempster. Agreement or near-agreement on players and cash, no agreement with Dempster. MORE.

Dempster 10/5 rights, can veto any deal. #Braves his No. 2 choice after #Dodgers. May simply be matter of enticing him to waive no-trade.

Padilla/ESPN: Sarcastic Demp: "If it's on the internet, it must be true."

Twitter is more real than reality.

thekapman David Kaplan
Per Randall Delgado's agent: We haven't heard a thing about him being traded.

Brian Roberts! Brian Roberts! Brian Roberts!

Who the fuck is Dave O'Brian anyway?

Atlantic Journal-Constitution writer

Thanks ROB G. Well, Mr. O'Brian could be the Southern Phil Rogers? that may have been some unfounded "Tweeting" to begin with.

5 other guys jumped on right after him that a deal was done.

They can always say they were following O'Brian ;)

Former UIC lefty Michael Heesch off to good start at Boise:

5 games, 10 innings, 10 hits, no runs, no walks, 11 Ks.

I wouldn't be jumping up and down to move to ATL, personally.

Maybe we match up with the Angels better? Seems like he may just like the West Coast. Plus, it is much closer to BC where he's from.

randall de-base-on-balls-o....awesome...a 5 inning/100+ pitch strikeout pitcher with control issues.

hope he's bringing more talent with him if it's legit.

Padilla/ESPN: Sveum said he talked to Cubs decision makers and no deal with Braves was in place.

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat
Cubs mgr Sveum says no deal re: Dempster to Braves. Called it "fabrication"

whole thing is weird...people talking about his no-trade rights, but as of a few days/week+ ago the braves were supposedly on his list of places he wouldn't mind going.

Mike check?

My guess is that Sveum was more or less told what to say until the whole 10/5 thing gets worked out. No need to risk saying anything else.

If/when this goes through, solid trade for Theo and Hoyer here. Got a very high upside guy under club control for 5 more years for 2+ months of Dempster.

Called it "fabrication"
So the deal is on hold until someone sews Dempster an Atlanta uniform?

I'm on it.

so to guess,

somehow story leaked from Atlanta (David O'Brien and their beat writer, Bowman had it first) and then national guys jumped on it as well.

All before Cubs got a hold of Dempster.

Dempster not happy (maybe with Atlanta, maybe he was told he'd be in the loop, who knows why?) they're in damage control now.

the only problem with it is all the rumors/articles saying ATL was on his "short list" or "list" or whatever...either way, it was supposed to be one of his more desired teams.

be interesting if it was 1 bad long-running rumor crashing into another bad-trade rumor...kinda not...ready to get the dumpster trade over with...and ready to keep garza...or trade him and then sign a.sanchez in the offseason on the "kinda cheap"...sigh.

Feel free to correct me, and I am sure you will, but I do not recall ONE former Brave player whom we received in a trade that was any good for the Cubs. Seems like they always fleeced Hendry, Lynch, McFail, etc.

Free Agents, sure. Except Jeff Blauser. DeRosa is probably the most productive ex-Brave the Cubs signed. And, was an amazing super-sub.

We have only had misery from any association with the Braves. I think of guys like Marcus Giles (Prior), the aforementioned Blauser, Maddux, Jose Ascanio, Mike Remlinger...Who am I forgetting?

The Jose Hernandez (99?) trade for 3 pitchers (Joey Nation, Micah Bowie and ???) who never amounted to anything was another trade where the Cubs got taken by the braves.

Rueben Quevedo. The Hernandez trade also included Terry Mulholland from the Cubs to the Braves.

Also D-Lee for Robinson Lopez, Jeffrey Lorick and Tyrelle Harris. Lorick and Harris are still in the system.

April 28, 1966: The Chicago Cubs traded Bobby Cox and cash to the Atlanta Braves for Billy Cowan.

lol! See what I mean?! The Cubs are indirectly and directly responsible for them winning the World Series!

E-MAN: Jack Curtis for Bob Buhl was a good trade for the Cubs.

Also, Socks Seibold and four others plus $200K for Rogers Hornsby was a VERY good deal. Helped the Cubs win the pennant in '29.

PHIL: In the Magical Cubs 1961 Season, Jack Curtis had the following line: W 10 L13 4.89ERA, with a whip of 1.50.

But he did pitch 180 innings that year which would be an "innings eater" these days, and a "spot starter" in 1961.

But, I am glad you mentioned him so it forced me to look him up!

Anyway, if that's all we can come up with - even more pathetic. ha! And, I can only relate to the 1969 Atlanta Braves moving forward as the Mets beat them in the first ever "NLCS" and I was so bitter knowing that our boys would have swept them.

E-MAN: I should have said the Cubs got Bob Buhl for Jack Curtis, and then Buhl went on to have four pretty good seasons for a bad Cubs team (he won 51 games 1962-65) before going to the Phillies with Larry Jackson in the deal in which the Cubs acquired Fergie Jenkins and Adolfo Phillips, while Jack Curtis worked mostly as a lefty reliever for the Braves in 1962 before getting traded to Cleveland and almost immediately going into the Witness Protection Program.

Buhl was actually a very reliable starting pitcher for the Cubs the entire time he was in Chicago, but the two things I remember most about him are that he was a terrible hitter, and he sweated like a pig, even if it was 40 degrees.

You can throw the Omar Infante trade in with the others. We received the forgettable Jose Ascanio. They got a guy who made an all star team and who is still going strong. They parlayed Infante into Uggla.

Tigets get Infante and A. Sanchez from Marlins according to Morosi.

nooooooooooooooooo....not a.sanchez.

i'm sorry, but if dude isn't gonna test FA i -really- want garza to stick around. sanchez is undervalued...

Man. I liked me an A. Sanchez

Jacob Turner headed to Marlins and others.

@pgammo: 1st draft pick deal:A Sanchez, Infante and comp balance pick for Jacob Turner, Rob Brantly, , Brian Flynn and Det. comp pick. Fascinating

Awesome move by Detroit.

Ichiro to Yanks, check the twitter box for details.

Joel Sherman‏@Joelsherman1

Fangraph's UZR-150 has Ichiro by far MLB best def OF. But not sure about system since 2d best is Alfonso Soriano. I kid u not.

It always helps your statistical ratings when you don't make any errors. Also, Sori has actually been pretty decent in the OF this year.

Muskat Ramblings on Dempster's day:

ninja has ruined his own no-hitter through 8...only hit so far is a grounder to 2nd on which mcCl beat out ninja on a footrace to 1st.

that said, he's in line for his first complete game with 99 pitches through 8ip.

If you jinxed it again....

marmol up in the pen, cubs batting top 9th...heh.

...and marmol it is.

at least we'll never have to worry about a pitcher going over 120 pitches...they have a hard enough time getting 100 pitches a game.

someone remembered to pack t.campana for the road trip. he's out of his suitcase and pinch running for soriano after a double.

"They really haven't told me anything specific (to work on)," Vitters said. "I just assume it means I need to get better at everything. I'm not there for a reason. It's because I need to get more repetition, I need to improve every single day as much as I possibly can."

I see Almora smacked a 2 run bomb this evening.

I know. I saw that. Let's hope these kids (Soler, Almora, Baez, et al) make it to Wrigley someday. So many get stuck on their way to MLB.

Cubs AAAA team is interested in LaHair. Duh.

With Garza likely to miss a start, does this mean that he will not be traded prior to the trade deadline?

  • Oh what do you know, Cubster? Go back to your day job.

--- Ducks, puts on Cardinals cap, runs.

  • Russell had a severe hamstring last year while with the A's system, forcing him to miss the first half of 2014. I've even wondered if his injury last year was a component of Billy Beane putting him on the trade market. He was quoted saying that last year's injury was a 10 out of 10 when it happened. Last night he said his hamstring soreness was a 1/1.5 out of 10. Hamstring injuries are tricky though, so I'd expect the medical team to be overly cautious here.

  • ...I want to reinforce the observation that there was no sea of red in the crowd. The usual Cardinal fans roaming the stadium were few and far between.

Also, almost every 2 strike pitch brought the fans to their feet. Good for those in knee rehab.

  • "1st team hit hit 6HR in a game in the postseason." rises above obvious...i checked it with the official fact-finding commission of Douche, Douche, and Douchestein. they agreed with you, but they're a bunch of f'n douches so who cares?

btw, the cubs are 2-1 in the post-season series.

  • I should be able to watch the game on the NFL replay app, whatever that thing is called. I've got it on my iPad. This is the first year I haven't forced myself to somehow watch every game - no I take that back, last year was - in quite some time. Last year was so unbearable, no pun intended.

You make some good points about Cutler, and I was a holdout defender of Cutler for a long time. I gave up on him a bit after one too many dumb interceptions, but last year doesn't count. Trestman was the worst coach in Bears history.

  • Nice little reportage there!. I think you're older than me. Considerably older. Maybe several generations. Working out is so essential, especially as age kicks in, isn't it? I still lift weights, and so I'm confident that when I get to be at the hip breaking age, mine won't be a statistic. But I have a ways to go for that to be a concern.

  • What was impressive to me is that the Cubs won despite poor base running, several defensive miscues, Russell leaving due to injury, Arrieta having an off game and getting knocked out early, and Rondon giving up 2 runs in the 9th. If they can win a game like that...

  • I was there too. The crowd was absolutely electric. People were standing for every big and semi-big moment, from the first inning on. It felt incredibly strange and exhilarating to see the Cubs (the Chicago bleepin' Cubs!) score playoff insurance runs on the Cardinals. What a game. One to remember.

  • 14 in attendance. What's the record for attendance in the fall? I guess I should ask what the record attendance listed is in one of your recaps.

  • I was there too, with my grown son. This is my miracle year-- I rose to the top of the season ticket list after eight years, completely unexpectedly, and my wonderful wife agreed to put the ticket fee on the emergency credit card. The whole point of course was that the Cubs were going to be good this year, and then for a while, so to get season tickets with the guaranteed shot at the postseason was incredible timing. We got to the remote lot at 4:10 after stopping at Nhu Lan for our usual banh mi sandwiches, only to find the lot full, way earlier than normal.

  • Wrigley was electric tonite
    Not many card fans
Video board was great, they played "there goes my hero" by foos over ryno highlights before he came out. Spectacular

Good times hopefully they win tomorrow but think Lester will beat poopy pants on Wednesday.

Happy 4th anniversary of Theo's signing

    Go Cubs !

  • Yeah. "Goodbye!" is a lame HR call.

I miss Len and JD -- although, driving home from a friend's, WBBM played all 6 HR calls in a row -- and Len got to call the Bryant/Rizzo back-to-back. Very fun.

  • Lackey has been a beast against us. His stats on 3 days rest, however, not as nice. There is plenty of hope.

  • And, no dreadlocks grown yet.

  • Captain Obvious Strikes Again!!!

  • Amen, brother.
