What Jim Harbaugh might look like in Superbowl.

I like Jim Harbaugh.
He's had his ups and downs.
You can't forget the Mike Ditka insani-tirade in that awful Bears loss to the Vikings with the Harbaugh audible, the interception, and the 20 to nothin' Bears lead in the 4th going poof.

I was with my dad at the only bar in Prescott Arizona with cable.
Unbelievably, we were the only Bears fans.
A whole bar-ful of Viking fans in Prescott Arizona?
So I was pretty irate myself when Harbaugh threw the interception.
At first the dressing down by Ditka felt good, but after awhile I thought well...maybe he's been waiting 10 years to blow his stack ever since he decided to get that perm in '82.
We had to skulk out when it was over.
Anyway, Harbaugh.
You saw him in the 4th quarter against the Falcons, right?
Going crazy on the sidelines when it was ruled that Harry Douglas had caught the ball Harbaugh thought had hit the ground?
Wonder where he got that crazy act.
But..pure entertainment, and that kind of crazy seems to be working for the Niners.
That particular play is when I decided to do this painting.

One of the really great things about the Superbowl Sunday?
It'll be followed a week later by... Pitchers and Catchers Report Sunday.
Go Baseball!

The painting style is lifted from one of my fav painters, the great Francis Bacon.

Don't know why it didn't show up in a different color, but "Ditka Insani-tirade" is linked to the ESPN video recap of that Bears/Vikes game.

I really like the post-modern, neo-existentialist, illusory tiradist escapist feel to this work. And, more seriously, nice!

When I saw painting I though of Ralph Steadman.

Great job!

... And I just saw the postscript. *Head slap*

Wow.
You guys brought up some of my favorite artists. Thanks so much and I'll go all Steadman next time.

Something to do with bats...wooden and mammal.

you'll be seeing them soon enough

yeah, just stop right there, guy.

I'm a bears' fan, who went to Univ of Michigan and I've lived in Ann Arbor for over 20 years after growing up in Chicago etc. My brother went to Indiana and married a lady from Indie during the captain comeback years. I should be the ideal Jim Harbaugh fan and I detest him (though I respect his coaching ability). Is there anyone outside of SF who doesn't want to punch him in the face (figuratively)?

welly ready to take over as cubs #1 catcher...i'm ready for him to take over, too.

the expected Ks might be a bit high, but i like the rest of the package.

Tim are you working in guache now? Mixed media with pastels and watercolor? Nice work! More of this, please?

That's just acrylics, E. I don't know why I don't do it more often, but yeah, maybe more..

meanwhile, we now live in a world where the tax implications of trademarking the name "Kaepernicking" are discussed.

RT @Tcampana_24 On my way to Phoenix with @whit_law ready to get season goin ready for a #breakoutseason

good luck on breaking the iowa cubs team SB record, guy.

fwiw, Chico Walker - 67 - 1986

When Chico was traded to the Angels, we got a guy named Todd Fischer who had made 9 MLB appearances, all out of the bullpen, the last of which ended with him getting the loss in an extra-inning game against the Red Sox without throwing a ptich. He entered the game and immediately balked in the winning run. After the trade to the Cubs, he apparently never played another inning of organized ball again after the trade.

jed lowrie's career gets screwed over...traded to the A's to be a part time player. chris carter and brad peacock going to HOU...OAK also gets fernando rodriguez. HOU also gets minor league catcher max stassi.

another mindblowingly stupid trade for HOU.

Lowrie's propensity for injury has long made him a part time player.

for a team with little immediate need, even for a guy like lowrie, i would have left him and his $2.4m plugged into 600+ PA at SS to get something more than a sketchy middle-rotation ceiling pitcher, a A+ ball catcher with a bit of power upside, and a 160+K 1st/DH...especially for a team that doesn't need a 1st.

lowrie's not just a guy who plays SS, he plays it good enough to stay there. OAK will shuffle him around 2nd/3rd and bit of time at SS...as it is he'll probably steal more playing time at 3rd with OAK.

then again, i don't like c.carter...i think even at his best he's a 25-30HR guy while K'ing a ton. i'd rather gamble on lowrie's upside and worry about trading him mid-season or post-season. HOU's in no hurry and they got a sub-40m roster anyway.

I watched #Cubs RHP Matt Garza throw at Fitch Park today. Long toss and off the mound, looked very strong. Pitchers and catchers Feb 10!

Today is the deadline for the Cubs to either trade, release, or outright Lendy Castillo.

Saturday and Sunday are not MLB business days during the off season, so the Cubs had to place L. Castillo on waivers no later than 2 PM (Eastern) last Friday so that he will clear waivers today (actually the MLB daily waiver report is issued at 1 PM Eastern, so the Cubs will find out in less than an hour if Castillo was claimed).

If he is not claimed off waivers, I would expect the Cubs to outright Lendy to either Tennessee or Daytona rather than to Iowa.

BTW, Castillo will NOT have the option to elect free-agency if outrighted, but he will be a Rule 55 minor league free-agent (6YFA) if he is not added back to an MLB 40-man roster by 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day following the conclusion of the 2013 World Series.

lendy makes it unclaimed and is outrighted to AAA.

PROJECTED LINEUP
CF David DeJesus/Brett Jackson
SS Starlin Castro
LF Alfonso Soriano
RF Nate Schierholtz/DeJesus
C Welington Castillo
3B Ian Stewart/Luis Valbuena
DH Wilson Betemit/Trayvon Robinson
2B Darwin Barney

When did Cubs get Betemit and Robinson? And when did they move to the AL?

Yeah, I wondered about that too.

So, we are supposed to call this guy an "expert" prospect grader? He doesn't know what players are on which team?

editor 'effed that one up I'm sure, over-aggressive copying and pasting probably and missed Rizzo..although he certainly won't be batting 7th.

no rizzo...schierholtz batting 4th...DH slot with those guys...seems legit.

Only Jesus could love a punch and judy no glove player like you-

http://deadspin.com/5981847/juan-pierre-wants-you-...

pierre was always weak with the bunt, but he knows way better than to handle a bat like that...hell, even pitchers in the AL know better than that.

Looks like Chris Carpenter's career is over. DL, not retirement, so he still gets a dozen millions this year.

Re: Can Hak-Ju Lee stay in the majors with an empty .280 BA because of his defense?

Yes. For a long time. Also gets a boost because he can run.

Obligatory Vogelbach question

Klaw: Obligatory reference to his weight

Re: Most overrated prospect, is it Mike Olt?

He'd be in the mix. Solid player, not a star. Syndergaard, but that may just be a function of unverified reports he threw 102 plus the coverage he got when he was traded. Also a solid prospect. I'm ignoring the guys like Ruf, Gattis, Junior Lake, Szczur, fringy guys who are treated by their own fans as future stars.

Re: How close was Pierce Johnson to Top 100?

Wasn't. Arm action scares me. Would at least like to see a full healthy year first, since he's had so much forearm trouble.

still going on, so there may be more

Hmm..I'm not sure I've seen any Cubs fans projecting Szczur or Lake as future stars...
maybe more optimistic than Keith Law is, but still.

"Orioles claimed INF/OF Russ Canzler off waivers from the Yankees."

lulz. another week, another team. maybe he'll stick with this one.

''There was a dispute over compensation for Bosch's work, which is why my lawyer and I are listed under 'moneys owed' and not on any other list,'' Braun said.

''I have nothing to hide and have never had any other relationship with Bosch,'' he said. ''I will fully cooperate with any inquiry into this matter.''

I'd hate to be an achilles tendon running around on that sod on April 29

  • I think with Hammels and Hendricks struggles the 2nd half we forget how dominate of 1st halves they had and how many games they won us as the offense was struggling. We also forget they are back of the rotation guys and we can't be expecting ace quality there.

  • Maybe it's just Werth & Ross I'm noticing. Weird.

  • CRAIG: Jose Albertos is not chunky like Fernando. He's built more like Dylan Cease. Exact same body type. And his delivery is free & easy. He's definitely not a "max effort" guy.

  • Hendricks after 50 MLB starts: 17-11, 3.45 ERA, 1.12 WHIP. Not bad for a #5 starter. He may be a 6-inning max guy, but, if he can keep those stats up, I will gladly take it.

Speaking of WHIP -- last year, he was tied for 11th in the NL. Tied with Hammel.
Last year's NL rank in WHIP: Arrietta 2nd, Lester 9th, Haren 10th, Hammel T11th, Hendricks T11th. Wow.

  • I went to a Nats game in DC two years ago while looking at colleges with my son -- it's a fun park, worth a visit if you are in the area.

I also saw the "slowness" thing -- particularly Werth, who would mosey out of RF about 5 seconds before the inning started.

    Weird.

  • It's Dusty's fault. It'll be the end of them.

  • Speaking of how teams "look", my take on the Nats- It's really weird, but the pace of the entire team seems slow. Slow walking to the plate, slow on the mound, even on some routine groundouts, it looked as if there wasn't a ton of hustle. Don't get me wrong, when the ball is hit to their outfielders, they get after the ball, I'm really referring to non-critical action- they mosey around. It's kind of odd. Maybe that "calm power" is part of the Nats ethos, idk.

  • My favorite moment of Hendricks' performance last night was the last strikeout he rung up- the cajones it took to throw a high, 86MPH fastball to Zimmerman on a 0-2 count. And he swung the bat like it was a 96MPH heater. I literally laughed out loud.

  • In listening to Maddon's post-game, he is interested in how these other teams "look" to him. He is assessing for today...and tomorrow. I love this guy.

One observation from last night: Joe Ross is incredibly slow. 20-30 seconds between pitches at times. Hendrix had a nice, peppy rhythm which is great to see.

I know there are plenty of purists here which I applaud, but the game just will not sustain itself unless change of pace rules come into play. Pitch clock, improve the shit-ass reviews, mound visits (there is a clock for this), batter time outs, etc.

  • Thanks, Phil. Albertos at 17, and having gotten a good signing bonus ($1.5, even though as Mexican prospect I think his team gets half of that?), throwing in the 90's and showing some command of a curveball sounds pretty interesting, even if that control is only for a dozen-pitch sample.

What kind of a frame does he have? Is he on the stocky and short-ish side (I'm recalling Fernando Valenzuela!), or somewhat taller? A lot of 17-year olds have projection, "when he fills out" projection. Would that apply at all for Albertos?

  • A-Team

  • Ha

  • I definitely hang around here looking to reply to your comments as noticed by my nearly year long absence.

there's a fine line between posting something relevant, useful or at least humorous versus posting something irrelevant, useless or unfunny...actually it's rather quite a thick line and easy to see for most people not named crunch.

  • I certainly am digging the RISP machine Zobrist version.

  • Cubs are taking advantage of bad D by their opponents -- did it a few times in PIT and the Nats botched 2-out rundown leads to 3 Cub runs in the 8th. Which were nice to have.

I hope Kyle had fun at the dance party -- he was terrific.
