Theo Epstein's Best Original Screenplay

It's Oscar Night and as I'm sure many of you know, our own Theo Epstein has Hollywood royalty in his family tree.
His great uncle Julius co-authored the screenplay to the 1942 Academy Award winning film, "Casablanca".
Some of the famous words from said screenplay have been mutilated in the drawing above, but I don't think Julius or Theo would mind.

So...just a little cartoon for your Sunday and may Alan Arkin win best supporting actor, please.

curtis granderson (NYY) fractured right forearm...expected out 10 weeks. yow. hbp earlier in today's TOR/NYY game. let's see...they just lost their LF'r...their best DH option is travis hafner (left handed) with no right handed counterpart...soriano has stated the NYY is a place he'd be willing to go... well then...this could get interesting.

since grandy's "only" supposed to miss a month or so a lot may depend on the kind of spring soriano has...and the kind of spring ronnier mustelier has. their only other options include guys like juan rivera and matt diaz...meh. given that granderson can also play CF (much like their other 2 regulars)...it can open an option besides DH for soriano in the long term by resting ichiro/gardner/granderson if they yanks feel the need to bite. plus, there's no guarantee t.hafner is going to be worth his DH slot even if the $2m gamble is small. that said, if the yanks aren't willing to give up squat yet still expect the cubs to pick up almost all the salary there's not much incentive for the cubs to shift soriano and his production, even if overpaid, if they're just going to end up with $10-$12m saved over a couple of years.

Dioner Navarro with a 3 run HR to put the Cubs up 4-0 Shark gave up a single to Very Big Panda in an otherwise uneventful first. Soriano hit a bullet off Matt Cain's hip but Cain stayed in to give up the HR to Navarro.

deleted because i'm not sure that tipping off people how to bypass mlb gameday's paywall is a good idea. go cubs...

meh...why not...technically it's their issue, not a forceful hack. okay, there seems to be a lag between authentication and account resets. i've had to do this for every feed and it only works for one feed (aka, you can't hop feeds). if you already have a regular/non-pay site account on mlb...i've been able to snag free audio feeds by going to the log-in on audio feed for a game, clicking on "lost password", and having the password assigned to the email addy reset. when done quickly, i've been able to log onto games using the reset password. for some reason it lets you access feeds under a freshly renewed password for your account even if you don't have a paid account. the password-reset thing i've had to do the past 2 days in order to get fresh access. once again, mlb needs to fix their authentication security scheme...but hopefully not any time soon.

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)
