Theo Epstein's Best Original Screenplay

It's Oscar Night and as I'm sure many of you know, our own Theo Epstein has Hollywood royalty in his family tree.

His great uncle Julius co-authored the screenplay to the 1942 Academy Award winning film, "Casablanca".
Some of the famous words from said screenplay have been mutilated in the drawing above, but I don't think Julius or Theo would mind.

So...just a little cartoon for your Sunday and may Alan Arkin win best supporting actor, please.

curtis granderson (NYY) fractured right forearm...expected out 10 weeks.

yow. hbp earlier in today's TOR/NYY game.

let's see...they just lost their LF'r...their best DH option is travis hafner (left handed) with no right handed counterpart...soriano has stated the NYY is a place he'd be willing to go...

well then...this could get interesting.

AZ Phil driving Soriano to Sky Harbor airport?

Not once ever have I thought that Soriano could possilby get traded for real.
But this...if you were to seriously think about it, what might the Yankees give in return?
If I have time, I might do some kinda gif on this...

But this...if you were to seriously think about it, what might the Yankees give in return?
Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson, Grant & Franklin are possibilities

That's a pretty good gif.

Whoops. Watch that Cap "I" in your tag Rob G. ;)

since grandy's "only" supposed to miss a month or so a lot may depend on the kind of spring soriano has...and the kind of spring ronnier mustelier has.

their only other options include guys like juan rivera and matt diaz...meh.

given that granderson can also play CF (much like their other 2 regulars)...it can open an option besides DH for soriano in the long term by resting ichiro/gardner/granderson if they yanks feel the need to bite. plus, there's no guarantee t.hafner is going to be worth his DH slot even if the $2m gamble is small.

that said, if the yanks aren't willing to give up squat yet still expect the cubs to pick up almost all the salary there's not much incentive for the cubs to shift soriano and his production, even if overpaid, if they're just going to end up with $10-$12m saved over a couple of years.

Dioner Navarro with a 3 run HR to put the Cubs up 4-0

Shark gave up a single to Very Big Panda in an otherwise uneventful first.
Soriano hit a bullet off Matt Cain's hip but Cain stayed in to give up the HR to Navarro.

...and here comes marmol...

leadoff walk...mid-season form.

3-4 SF/CHC...top 4...

lot of SF fans at the game.

thanks Tim. That screenplay put a tear in this Cubster's eye.

So glad I didn't go with the "Play it Sam. Play Go Cubs Go one more time." bit.

Me too. :)

In all seriousness, my money would be on Lincoln tonight. Whether or not it deserves best picture is another question.

Lincoln sucked! There I said. Bring the heat.

I thought he was a good president.

That was nonfiction?

He did kill a lot of vampires.

Are we talking about same movie?

Sounds about right. That happened when they weren't talking, right?

I found it pretty boring...felt like a stage play.

deleted because i'm not sure that tipping off people how to bypass mlb gameday's paywall is a good idea.

go cubs...

meh...why not...technically it's their issue, not a forceful hack.

okay, there seems to be a lag between authentication and account resets. i've had to do this for every feed and it only works for one feed (aka, you can't hop feeds).

if you already have a regular/non-pay site account on mlb...i've been able to snag free audio feeds by going to the log-in on audio feed for a game, clicking on "lost password", and having the password assigned to the email addy reset.

when done quickly, i've been able to log onto games using the reset password. for some reason it lets you access feeds under a freshly renewed password for your account even if you don't have a paid account. the password-reset thing i've had to do the past 2 days in order to get fresh access.

once again, mlb needs to fix their authentication security scheme...but hopefully not any time soon.

  • The Marlins organization is obviously affected deeply by this. I feel for the people there. And I understand circumstances have changed.

But retiring his number. Wow. Literally a week ago the rumor mill was fast and furious about how Fernandez was going to be traded this winter, with the front office in response doing almost nothing to deny it. And to turn around and retire his number, just like that, when they obviously felt the organization would have been better long-term without him, just reeks of insincerity.

  • jose fernandez's number is going to be retired by FLA.

there's custom jerseys on their way to tonight's game (and hopefully will make it on time). all the marlins are going to wear #16 tonight.

  • Lester is going to get one more start, right? It sure would be nice to see him get a shot at 20 wins.

  • Nicely done! I think in my 10-14 games I went .500 or a little over. Strangely, I went to the Cards games they mostly lost (incl Saturday) and the one SF game they lost, plus a couple Brewers games they lost, too. I should have gone to just Reds games. But still - saw mostly very good baseball on the North Side this year. Regardless of what happens come October - the Cubs are positioned for some good times in the next 3-5 years.

  • RIP Arnie. We could use a lot more like you -- a man who succeeded and failed on his own terms, a true original, and, finally, a remarkable example of graciousness towards others.

  • Cubs finish 33 over at home. I was, personally, one game over at 3-2, which was one of my better years in a while.

I do hope that's the last time we see the Cardinals this year. A lot of power, which is dangerous, particularly in a short series, and they have really shut down KB all year.

    Oh, and Jon Lester? Damn!

  • Yes. Boating accident at 3AM. Very sad, but stupid. Young men do stupid things.

    edwards in.

  • 2 out in the 7th, lester at 84 pitches, ross taken out for the standing O.

it's possible contreras will catch lester for another inning+.

  • d.ross gets his 2nd standing O on the night (last home game of the season)...hits HR #10...curtain call. baseball.

  • as a fan, he only "owes" us the game on the field and not getting in the way of others on his team being ready to play (imo).

it's exponentially worse to his family and friends, but this dude most likely had 15+ years of play left and even though he just turned 24 a couple months ago he had already established himself as a top guy in the game.
