Dillon Maples threw a bullpen session this morning and looked good. I doubt that he will be held back too much longer,

Also, Hayden Simpson (Cubs 2010 #1 draft pick) threw "live" BP today and his curve ball was really exploding. I don't know what the velocity was on his fastball (and that is an issue), but at least he was throwing free & easy.

AZ Phil - I believe Izaac Garsez has been released or has retired (haven't seen anything on BA...he did not go to Spring Training and was seen at his alma-mater's baseball games over the weekend. I believe he is finishing up his schooling.

BHR: Thanks for the info regarding Garsez. That would explain why he's not in Minor League Camp.

Every year there are one or two guys who don't report, usually older college players who have read the writing on the wall. Sometimes the player will officially file retirement papers, but if he doesn't he will eventually get placed on the Restricted List for a couple of years (keeping the player from signing with another MLB organization or playing independent ball) and then will be quietly released.

apologies, I can't figure out where the open bold or strong tag is that's screwing up the front page.

Juan Paniagua and Roni Torreyes? Nooooooooooooooooo.

getting work visas or resolving visa issues is sometimes slow. it wouldn't be the only team it's happening with this year or years before.

i'd find it hard to believe torreyes's career has dead ended in organized ball, especially.

could be a family issue... *shrug*

Juan Carlos Paniagua used an assumed name (Juan Callado) when he signed with AZ a few years ago, so he probably would get scrutanized pretty closely by INS anytime he applies for a work visa.

~golf clap~

John Sickels Top 150 with major league ETA.

"18) Javier Baez , SS, Chicago Cubs, 2015

Baez has some issues but his bat speed really impresses me.

25) Jorge Soler , OF, Chicago Cubs, 2014

44) Albert Almora, OF, Chicago Cubs, 2015

98) Dan Vogelbach, 1B, Chicago Cubs, 2015

Vogelbach has an outstanding bat and could rank much, much higher in 2014 once he proves himself in full-season ball.

112) Arodys Vizcaino, RHP, Chicago Cubs, 2013"

Ex-Cub RHP Angel Guzman is a Pitching Coach at Minor League Camp.

I suspect he will be an Assistant Pitching Coach at Extended Spring Training once the regular season starts, helping David Rosario and Anderson Tavarez with the EXST pitchers, and Rick Tronerud with the Rehab Group.

Guzman should be able to offer lots of helpful advice to kids rehabbing from injuries, since he spent much of his career at Fitch Park doing just that.

Junior Lake out 4-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his top rib on his right side.

Scott Baker to start Sunday.

it's "only spring"...but l.valbuena is leading off vs a lefty again.

cubs had bases loaded with 0 outs in the 3rd...0 runs scored.

cubs are season-ready 2 weeks early. swank.

Italy has been a cool story (hey look, USA can field a second team better than a lot of countries' first team), but I admit I won't be disappointed if they lose tonight and Rizzo gets back to Cubs camp in one piece.

I think I feel like a lot of baseball fans in that I enjoy the Classic (maybe more than ever this year) but I don't want guys from my favorite team playing.

Yeah, it sucks. Junior Lake was injured during the WBC. What? He got hurt in Cubs camp? nvm

  • May their next game go 26 innngs..and get suspended.

  • Hear Hear!

  • So many memories from this game -- Javy's HR, Grimm's Ks, Soler's throw, Schwarber's ridiculous bomb, Strop overcoming his demons, Lackey screaming at himself after giving up the hit to Hammel....just awesome stuff.

  • dodgers win...1 more game of pitcher use on the mets and dodgers (degrom + greenkey)

  • maddon is easily one of the best managers out there, that's why he's getting paid huge for someone that doesn't have to rent/own in NYC/LA.

for the most part there's 2-3-5 of guys on that level, and 25-28 other teams trying to find a guy who's capable. they can also go out of favor rather quickly (m.sciossa recently). last year's NL MOY didn't make it a full year into 2015 before getting fired.

no matter how one feels about how it could have been done cheaper with less commitment, we only know how this way is working out. it's been awesome so far.

  • Agree. It could not be more perfect that we beat the Cardinals in this ascendant season of all seasons, and in the first postseason series we ever saw them in.

  • I think all we can say is, "Okay, let's go on to the next series and see what happens." And how indescribably awesome is it to be able to say that on this date in this year.

  • Thanks, O&B. So funny about our age. Let's just say- I have always wondered why Durocher didn't give Hundley a few days off when he had Gene Oliver and John Boccabella on the bench.

  • Strop K'ing Peralta to start the 8th, given their history -- what a fantastic moment! And Javy bouncing back -- big time -- form yesterday's games.

Contributions from literally everyone in this series -- Soler and Schwarber were off the charts -- Miggy's pick-off was awesome.

This team is just so much damn fun.

  • Wish I knew how to post a pic. Both CUBSTER & I in attendance. I finally feel like some demons have been vanquished, and there is some magic here.

Joe Maddon is far and away the best manager I have seen work for my team.

  • pretty much this. also, a magician.

  • Madden brought it in some lions and sharks to Wrigley Field and let them eat people

  • What did I miss?

  • I think Strop deserves a very special mention. He had so many struggles against the Cardinals but pitched two successful and very high pressure innings the last two games against them and looked nasty doing so.

  • How about this, the Cubs are 10-1 over the last 3 weeks.

  • I was thinking about it earlier that the Cubs are 101-66 and the Cards 101-65...but, does anyone outside of the two of us ever calculate records including post season? Don't think I've seen that ever before.
