Cubs most profitable team in baseball

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs...

Good news- David Bote in Daytona camp.

Bad new- Paniagua is Nowhere Man

Vizcaino to 60 day DL....Cubs claim Guillermo Moscoso off waivers.

Awesome. I was just thinking we needed more fly ball pitchers.

I wonder what they see in him?
Was he on Team Russia for the WBC?

mlbtr on Mosc-o-soandso...

The Blue Jays claimed Moscoso off of waivers just a week-and-a-half ago. Last season with the Rockies, the 29-year-old posted a 6.12 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 50 innings. He also started 21 games for the 2011 Athletics, posting a 3.38 ERA with 5.2 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 128 innings.

so does this mean Russell is the only lefty in the pen?

and is Moscoso get Hisanori Takahashi's spot as long reliever?

the Sushi bars in Chicago don't like this move

aside from t.wood russell is the only lefty on the team.

i dunno what they're going to do with the new guy, but i'd imagine taka (a lefty) would break with the team. he's had decent numbers this spring for a deception/weird-pitching guy. he's given up 4 homers in 15ip, though...so *shrug*...guess we'll find out soon enough.

If you throw out Moscoso's COL splits for 2012, here's what you get when he was on the road:

G 12, IP 23, ERA 2.70, H 26, R/ER 7, HR 2, SO 22, BB6, WHIP 1.371, SO/9 8.5, SO/BB 3.67, BAA .286, OBP .327

meh. I still don't get it although his home stats in COL are much worse as one would expect including an ERA of 9.11 and a WHIP 2.02 (26 IP).

AZ PHIL: You have mentioned a handful of potential prospects, but who is your favorite for grooming as the "lockdown closer" of the near future? Maples?

E-MAN: If he ever gets his visa issues resolved, I predict Juan Carlos Paniagua will be the Cubs closer of the future.

AzPhil,

Hope all's well. Thanks for providing us the updated rosters.

a) How has Hayden Simpson looked? I vaguely recall that you had a blurb on his secondary pitches looking intriguing, but I can't find it right now.

b) How do you think the first base depth chart eventually breaks to start the year. More specifically, what do you think the chances are of Vogelbach starting in A+? Betting money is still probably Peoria, but with Hoilman gone, there's a hole at first in AA to start the year. Guess Rafael Lopez could be in the mix to get time there. Maybe they demote one of Nelson/Bour/Rohan. Has Geiger looked decent enough to start in Tennessee at first?

TOONSTER:

a) Ref: Hayden Simpson... Breaking ball looks very good, but fastball velolcity still not there. The end may be near.

b) I doubt that the Cubs will keep both Justin Bour and Brad Nelson at Iowa, so if they release Nelson and keep Bour at Iowa, then Geiger stays at Tennessee, Vogelbach is with Daytona, and Shoulders is at Kane County. If the Cubs keep Nelson, then I would think it would mean Bour goes back to Tennessee, Geiger goes to Daytona, and Vogelbach would probably go to Kane County and play 1B and Shoulders would play a lot of LF, although Vogelbach and Geiger could alternate between 1B & DH at Daytona (and Geiger could play some 3B), or Vogelbach could alternate with Shoulders between 1B & DH at Kane. The Cubs are apparently still considering the scenarios, because Bour and Nelson were both in the I-Cubs lineup yesterday (Nelson at 1B and Bour at DH).

Is there still downward cascading yet to happen?

There has to be, since most teams have well over their roster limit of players.

  • Maddon would have started three lefties against the Dodgers, Montgomery, Zastryzny and Lester, except that he doesn't have the juice to do that. No manager does. Maddon has a boss, Epstein (and probably Hoyer, too), who gave him a starting rotation of five guys including Hammel. Maddon was asked yesterday about the starting group for next year and basically said, Not my call, that's why I drive away in my RV in the summer and occasionally check in, etc.

  • video of Maddon.

always nice that he actually tries to honestly answer questions. Does mention that he wanted to give Zastr? a chance in a meaningful spot rather than a mop-up role.

  • from Muskat:

#Cubs Maddon: "I'm not going to make up an excuse for why I did what I did. It has nothing to do with lack of confidence" ... "It was the right thing to do today based on what I saw, what their lineup looked like and Rob Z.'s availability." #Cubs

Hammel not particularly understanding of getting pulled out...as he should. Be curious what Maddon had to say. All I can think of is is keeping arms fresh and maybe wanting to see if Zastr? is worth considering for the playoffs and how he'd do against the Dodgers.

  • great defense

Heyward, Russell, Baez, Bryant, Ross in particular...although Bryant's a bit hard to judge with all the positions.

Fowler and Rizzo in the top half of the NL for their positions as well (per fangraphs)...Zobrist right at the halfway cutoff for 2b in the NL.

I'm sure some luck is involved too, but the Cubs and Maddon knew what they were doing.

  • If all the starters have FIP > ERA, is that luck or good defense?

Craig A. 17 hours 45 min ago view
  • #Cubs plummet to 19-5 in August.

    Fun with FIP

    • J. Hammel   3.07 ERA/4.27 FIP (3.68 FIP last year)
    • J. Arrieta     2.62 ERA/3.05 FIP (2.35 FIP last year)
    • J. Lester     2.81 ERA/3.67 FIP (2.92 FIP last year)
    • K. Hendricks  2.19 ERA/3.37 FIP (3.36 FIP last year)
    • J. Lackey     3.41 ERA/3.72 FIP (3.57 FIP last year with Cards)

  • zastyryzryzryzny put in 3.2ip 1h 0bb 3k

he's great when his control is "on"...problem is it's rarely "on" consistently. he could vault up the cubs prospect list if he ever gets better with that aspect of his game.

  • JD's take was just trying to get in a lefty to better deal with mostly lefty Dodgers lineup.

My second thought was what you came up with. My first thought was he was trying to light a fire under Hammel.

Jackstraw 20 hours 2 min ago view
  • Maybe he was trying to spare him another brutal road start? NY, Colorado...

billybucks 20 hours 19 min ago view
  • joe got a pitcher up for hammel at nearly the 1st sign of trouble in the 3rd...pulled after 2.1

not injured and though it wasn't his day so far he wasn't looking like a pure disaster.

really short leash on him. zastryznzryzryny in.

  • Russell and Soler can attest that Urias has a pretty good curve/slider - two big strikeouts looking to get out of that jam in the first.

Thank God we'll still have Hawk next season. (cricket cricket cricket)

"And it's a long fly ball, a mean fly ball, and a gone fly ball."
