Baez Long Ball Propels Cubs to Victory

Jeffrey Baez smacked a three-run home run onto 8th Street, Danny Lockhart singled twice and drove-in three runs, and Ryan McNeil (Cubs 2012 3rd round draft pick) threw three innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts, leading the Cubs to a 12-7 victory over the Angels in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

Ian Stewart continued his Extended Spring Training rehab assignment, batting five times (once in each of the first five innings) and going 1-4, reaching base on an RBI single and an HBP. He also flied out, lined out, and grounded out.

The defensive gem of the game was a run-saving inning-ending diving catch in right-centerfield by Cubs CF Rashad Crawford. A star basketball player at Mundy's Mill HS in Jonesboro, GA (where he was known as "Baby Jordan"), the 6'4 switch-hitting Crawford is one of the fastest and most athletic players in the Cubs system. 

Cubs 2012 6th round draft pick RHP Trey Lang struggled with his control today (throwing 30 pitches but only 11 strikes), and was pulled from the game after walking the bases loaded in the top of the 5th. 

The Cubs managed to score their 12 runs on only eight hits, but they drew nine walks and seven of them scored

The game was called in the top of the 9th after all of the pitchers scheduled to throw in the game has completed their work.

Reds manager Dusty Baker admitted Tuesday that he's "still a little worried" about Sean Marshall (shoulder).

 

"He's not right," Baker added. Marshall dealt with left shoulder fatigue towards the end of spring training and has appeared in just one game so far during the regular season. It sounds like a trip to the disabled list will probably be needed. The Reds have good depth in their bullpen, but losing Marshall for an extended period of time would hurt.

don mattingly's lineups in LAD keep weirding me out. they're not top-to-bottom goofy, but he's run out some odd ones so far this season. ...and based on heavy playing time + early returns + horrid spring...does justin sellers have nude pics of mattingly and nick punto? ...how is justin sellers even on this team? i don't care how many injuries they're dealing with. sellers is a perfect example of why you need to dig deeper on minor league numbers to see what the batter is doing with which pitches. he can't even hit mistakes...he pretty much only hits fastballs...and not well unless they're inside or over the plate.

When they announced the attendance of 30,000ish, the 15,000 people in the crowd Lol'd for reals. We sat about 35 rows closer than our seats, ended up 4 rows behind the bullpen near the families of the bullpen catcher and Fujikawa. Sold my extra 2 tickets to a homeless looking scalper for $3. Then a cop told him to get the fuck out of here. Might go again tonight if the rain stops.

At Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ is kind of lame compared to at Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Chicago Cubs Minor League right-handed pitcher Pedro Silverio has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The Cubs have a sponsorship deal with Wrigley gum to advertise a brand called 5, with visible containers in the dugout and in the clubhouse. But apparently a WGN-Ch. 9 camera shot of the bullpen inadvertently revealed gum wrappers of the competing brand. The relievers then were told they were under orders not to chew Double Bubble in the bullpen. Said one bullpen member: "I'm not changing gum after all these years because of the marketing department. I don't like that gum." If the marketing department insists, they should wrap Double Bubble in 5 gum wrap and provide it to the bullpen. There is already precedent for this kind of replacement in other sports- Certain NASCAR drivers sponsored by Coke will be seen drinking things from Coke bottles that are not Coke. Most times you cannot tell (it's still a brown soda), but it isn't Coke. A case of this may be somebody who cannot drink massive amounts of sugar like that that comes in a Coke, so they put some other drink in it (e.g. Diet Pepsi or tea).

This ends a streak of 105 consecutive home games without a weather cancelation (last time was August 2011 v Washington). I wouldn't be surprised to hear that's the new Wrigley Field record. It's OK, we'll start a new streak tomorrow! /baseball

Jim Callis: It’s not a great draft, but in any draft, there’s talent available. The Cubs have the draft position and the extra spending power that comes with it to get some impact players. At No. 2, I’m taking the best guy available rather than targeting a specific need. That said, the Cubs really need some advanced pitching and the two best players available are college arms: Mark Appel (Stanford) and Jonathan Gray (Oklahoma). If the draft were today, I think the Cubs would take one of them.

Jim Callis: You’d like him to show some semblance of discipline, but he also has a knack for hammering pitches out of the strike zone. The general feeling is that he’ll eventually figure out that pitchers won’t challenge him if they don’t have to, and he’ll adjust accordingly.

Re: Soler seeing the majors this year

Jim Callis: He’s already on the 40-man roster, so it’s possible.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
