It Might be Sinking, but Those Deck Chairs Need Shuffling

The Cubs today will make some roster moves including the return of everyone's least favorite closer since Mel Rojas.

According to Twitter, the moves will be Darwin Barney being reinstated from the disabled list to begin his 2013 scrappy campaign. He'll be joined by 37-year-old Cody Ransom, which will give Barney a nice peak into his MLB future while also rescuing us fans from anymore Brent Lillibridge at-bats(he's been DFA'd). Throw in Steve Clevenger's move to the 60-day disabled list and there are your position player updates.

C: Castillo, Navarro

INF: Rizzo, Barney, Castro, Valbuena, Gonzalez, Ransom

OF: Soriano, DeJesus, Schierholtz, Hairston, Sappelt

On the pitching side, Kameron Loe and Kevin Gregg join the team, they'll take the roster spots of Hisanori Takahashi(DFA'd) and Rafael Dolis(optioned). At the going rate, Loe or Gregg will either be closing or on the disabled list by the end of the week.

SP: Samardzija, Jackson, Wood, Villanueva, Feldman

RP: Camp, Russell, Marmol, Loe, Gregg, Bowden, Rondon

Barney gets the start tonight versus lefty Derek Holland, with Travis Wood taking the mound for the Cubs. Sappelt 8/Castro 6/Rizzo 3/Soriano 7/Hairston 9/Castillo 2/Barney 4/Gonzalez 5/Wood 1 are your starting 9.

SUPER BOWL!!!!

In the twitter box you'll see, that Gregg thinks he'll get a chance to close.

2013 cubs...rent the excitement.

Over Marmol's dead body
...would he then qualify for the 60day DL?

Not that it matters.

It will be interesting to see who goes when Q-J Fujikawa is ready to return. Not that it matters.

as much as people don't like gregg...i'm not holding out much hope for k.loe...more like no hope.

sure it's "only" a million bucks, but i dunno why they even wanted a piece of that.

Not saying I'll miss Lil'Britches, but who the hell plays first if Rizzo goes down?

..not that it matters.

I was gonna guess Schierholtz, but to my surprise he has all of 1 minor league game under his belt at that position. I thought he played some with the Giants. Otherwise I'm guessing Derrek Lee :)

Maybe one of the catchers....

The type of player they're signing--high-mileage jack of all trades, master of none--is likely to have spent time at first base.

At least I had no trouble locating fifty-odd games at first, equally divided between majors and minors, for Ransom.

Alberto Gonzales played some first at Washington and SD.

because of the crappy weather, questionable condition of some seats, and mega-low attendance at the NYM/COL game they told fans to sit where they wanted to and just move to another seat if someone says you're in their seat. it doesn't seem applicable for the mega-premium seats behind home plate, but whatever...still nice.

I understand the Rangers forfeited once they saw the new Cubs roster.

k.gregg, k.loe, c.ransom...this is the serious run cubs fans have been waiting for and other teams have been fearing.

most exciting jed hoyer press conference ever...this is a game changer.

in news that may mean a win, Garza tweeted that he's starting a rehab assignment with Kane County soon....

slated for 2 innings on Friday, essentially starting spring training...figure that's 3-4 weeks before he's major league ready

  • They call me Schwarberino because I'm basically Ruth,
and as long as we're rapping I'm gonna tell you the truth:
    This team would be even better if I wasn't laid up;
we'd win the World Series, the Superbowl, and the Stanley Cup.
As long as we're at it, I'm putting the Premier League on notice.
Hell, if I were healthy, the Cubs could run for POTUS.
My busted knee's even sadder than this presidential kerfuffle,
but my first rehab assignment will be the World Series Shuffle.

    I am avoiding grading papers.

  • I definitely hang around here looking to reply to your comments as noticed by my nearly year long absence.

there's a fine line between posting something relevant, useful or at least humorous versus posting something irrelevant, useless or unfunny...actually it's rather quite a thick line and easy to see for most people not named crunch.

  • I agree completely with Dusty. I appreciate him much more as the Nats skipper than as the Cubs.

  • so, what you're saying is you keep bringing up something over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over like you did with this issue for years back in the day...and obviously still into today...

...but that's fine if you do it.

brb, forming my next dozen replies for why you should shut up and never say anything about it again...oh wait, no i'm not because i'm not hanging around looking to tell you to shut up about repeating the same thing over and over and over and over...

  • Heyward looked fine shagging flies in BP. Wouldn't surprise me to see him in the line up tomorrow.

  • this seems like it could be an interesting series...parachat worthy.

  • speed leads...nothing ever changes. that's been a dusty thing since...forever.

holy shit, really? I made the comment because I had just discovered this novel trait that Dusty possesses.

btw, check out the leadoff hitter of the WS champion KC last year.

waaaat????? again with the knowledge dropping, I literally had no idea.

  • speed leads...nothing ever changes. that's been a dusty thing since...forever.

worst part is he's barely a speedster...just the best fitting.

btw, check out the leadoff hitter of the WS champion KC last year.

  • Gotta make sure you're not clogging up those bases.

  • Guess the OBP of Dusty's lead off hitter tonight?

    ?

    ?

    ?

    ?

    .221/.272 for his career

  • CRAIG: Albertos was throwing both his fastball and curve for strikes today, displaying the best command I've seen from him so far. The Cubs have limited his outings at EXST, so he hasn't been stretched-out beyond one inning on a semi-regular basis.

  • K-K-K inning for Albertos, 9/13 strikes. How did he look? All fastballs, or did he get some breaking pitches for the K's?

Is Moreno showing any hint of improved velocity?

  • Awesome! Also, dammit! I just finished a Russell verse!

I’m Addison Russell, flashin’ leather and muscle
Hit a grounder up the middle, damn right ya better hustle
I don’t miss, you know this, my D is the dopest,
I’m lovin’ it and glovin’ it and shovelin’ it to Zobrist
Another twin killing, score it six-four-three
If I keep this up they’ll name another street for me
There ain’t no SS better than Russell
And I’m just here to do the World Series Shuffle

  • Awww shit, it's Tony Rizzle, my nizzle,
so hot at the plate that, you can damn near hear me sizzle.
Len and JD been calling me the main ingredient
and opposing pitchers know the IBB is just expedient.
And if the ump is a chump and I find myself down
    0-2 I'll choke up, still make the pitcher look a clown;
got this lightning in my wrists, the pitch inside just can't 'cuff me,
hitting longballs up until we do the World Series Shuffle.

  • I just was looking at the Times Home page today, and was reading about (RIP) Prince. Didn't catch the Sports...
